Parents of pre-teen girls all across America can breathe a sigh of relief: Disney has announced that Miley Cyrus, the actress/singer best known as Hannah Montana, will be bringing her concert to movie theaters across the country. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which sold out in record time at top-dollar prices, will screen for one week as a Disney Digital 3D movie, from Feb. 1-7, saving tears and dollars for those girls who didn’t get in line fast enough to scoop up the concert tickets. Theater chains have long been trying to fill the downtime at movie
theaters — mostly weekdays and weeknights when movie houses represent ghost
towns — with compelling programming. The installation of digital cinema is
supposed to help answer this challenge by enabling theaters to program
less expensive digital content into the theaters during non-peak programming
times. The Cyrus concert movie will be an excellent test case, because if the rabid fan base of Hannah Montana isn’t willing to fill theaters, no one is. Disney hopes to put the concert film in about 880 theaters carrying 3-D.
