i haven’t seen “away from her”, but seeing scenes from julie christie, she DESERVES this award, and hopefully the academy will follow. let’s award original characters, not retreads of famous people’s hard lives. (see also : ray, the queen, last king of scotland, walk the line, need i go on).
I love Janie for mentioning Children Of Men. Exactly the movie I thought about when reading this list. And why cop out and give secondhand prizes to Once and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? Those movies are easily better than pretty much every movie on their top 10. Same with Children Of Men, should be on this year’s top 10 too. That movie is awesome. So is 3:10 To Yuma.
I was reading that the women’s acting race would be hard in terms of coming up with good nominees. What?? It’s easy – Halle Berry for Things We Lost in the Fire, Jodie Foster for The Brave One, Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton (maybe a supporting), Cate Blanchett for I’m Not There, maybe Keira Knightley for Atonement, Nicole Kidman for Golden Compass (supporting), Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth-Golden Age, Nicole Kidman for Margot at the Wedding. Maybe Julie Delpy for 2 Days in Paris. See – lots of ‘em! Why would there be a problem? And – can I write to the Academy to help them out with this??!
I’m glad to hear that Im not alone in my disgust for George Cloony’s so-called acting ability…is it politics that keeps a buzz going with this guy? Johnny and Tim all the way!
Let these guys get the credit they are finally due, not just as box office champs, but as artists of the highest order!

Christian Bale can’t get any love???!
Rescue Dawn AND 3:10 to Yuma
He’s so underrated-one of the best actor’s of his generation.
I know she’s a longshot, but I was really moved by Molly Shannon’s performance in “Year of the Dog.” I hope she won’t be forgotten at awards time.
Hairspray deserves more love. Michelle Pfeiffer deserves a supporting nod.
Does Once not exist?
To Chris, Children of Men can’t be mentioned this year, it was part of last year’s crop. Although I think it’s mindboggling that it not only didn’t get nominated for best picture last year, but didn’t win. Far superior to the Departed (which I also loved). I’m so excited to see Sweeney Todd, I think my head will explode. And No Country was brutal, funny, brilliant… haven’t seen anything that rivals it so far this year.
No ” Once ” is a travesty, but I love the love they give Tim Burton.
Whoever said across the universe should have been top 10 is, well, wrong.
They butchered every song; it was embarrassing to watch.
Into the wild??? crappy movie. Everyone wants to glorify an idiot!!
Tim Burton has some good movies… way back when. He really hasn’t done too much as of late. It would be interesting to if he could make a movie with more than just (Really really) white, pale people in it. His visuals are predictable. Zzzzzzz…
Why has the cinephilic community been so quick to canonize Tim Burton? For twenty years he has been making the same exhaustively Expressionististic, visually excessive children’s fables, assuming his audiences have attention deficit disorders. His only great movie was Ed Wood, and that released a decade ago. Burton needs to quit working in narrative visual mediums and turn to music videos. This nerd would be best-suited to collaborating with The Cure.
