As a person who gets almost all his livelyhood from the movies I have found the last 9 months to be extremely difficult. Work has never returned to the level it was before the first strike, and many of us have had to sell most of our valuables in order to simply pay the rent for another month. As a member of SAG, I am voting against the strike, as I feel there’s absolutely no way it can help LA. We’ll be feeling this one for the next few years.

Yes, acting is a job. As is “behind the scenes” work. If the actors decide to strike, so be it. They’ll be calling their own tune. Unfortunately, most people in this country aren’t able to do that. Most people need and want to remain employed in order to put food on the table, pay the mortgage and make sure their families are taken care of to the greatest extent possible. They have no choice in the matter. They DO have a choice as to whether they really care one way or the other if SAG decides to call for a strike. I for one don’t. Why? Because previous to the writer’s strike my television viewing was way down. The writer’s strike caused it to plummet even further, because guess what? I found I could get along without TV! I watch a couple shows a week. That’s it. If the actors strike, I’ll get used to being without those shows, too. As will others who’ve experienced the same decline in television viewing. Soon no one will have to worry about what’s on TV, because no one will care.

As an outsider looking in, I see a tremendously dynamic and powerful segment of society, endowed with influence and sheer number that is currently weak, fractured into competing unions both plaqued by poor leadership, petty rivalry, ego, and shortness of vision. Striking is never the answer if hardship to the members can not be compensated by real gains that reflect both rising costs of living and fairer distribution of profits throughout the industry. You need to form one union, an umbrella big enough to cover everyone. You’ll also require new leadership with a vision for a better future than reliving the same strike without gain or recovery. None in the current bunch who have gotten you here are going to make a lick of difference. You need people in leadership from among you who can organize, negotiate, and choose the battles that are worth fighting as one. Instead of striking you should be fixing your union problems. There will never be a better time to do that than right now.

If SAG strikes they are blind and dumb. SAG is already known for being the most incompetent Union in the country. So why not go ahead and destroy the entertainment industry. SAG should be disbanded and a new organization should be put in their place that fits the 21st Century. Not this old decrepit Union

A new faction needs to grow outside of SAG. A real union for the people by the people. When billions are lost in this dead economy the blame will be on the hands of the SAG board, no one else. Their greedy demands only effect the upper crust of the industry. It does not help the average actor, which it should. Someone needs to stand up and take charge of new union. Start a new cause. Leave SAG to protect the blockbuster actors they already cater to.

I believe the negotiations are at a standstill.
    Let’s hope things work out.

THE FACT IS and it’s never mentioned here. Non Union productions are rising so fast. It’s not about the Silver screen and TV any more. It’s streaming content through various devices, mobile or otherwise. YOU WILL see a decline in union actors. It’s a brave new world. SAG was created in the 30′s for a “studio system”. Non union productions on the web are exploding and it cannot be stopped. It’s time for a change, a new organization. SAGindie is not enough. Many productions are moving out of California, it’s no longer about California. It’s not even about tax incentives in other states It brave new world in technology and it’s global. SAG knows this, AFTRA knows this but if they don’t get on the ball…………..oh well. There are web series that are getting better rating than TV shows. How many under 30 individuals watch TV as opposed to streaming web? How many under 30 individuals read a newspaper.
The union can’t control the web or web productions on an indie level.
