Maybe three’s the magic number for Mike Judge. The talented but unlucky writer-director, whose last two films (Office Space and Idiocracy) were ignored by moviegoers, is assembling a new comedy called Extract, which centers on a flower-extract plant owner (played by Jason Bateman) who’s facing a stream of bad luck, including workplace issues and a cheating wife. Sources tell EW.com that Saturday Night Live‘s Kristen Wiig, who just landed a role in Drew Barrymore’s Roller Derby movie Whip It!, is in negotiations to play the cuckolding spouse, while Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Mila Kunis is in early talks to play one of the plant employees. Production is set to begin in August, pending the potential actors’ strike and Wiig’s SNL schedule.

Even if his last two movies weren’t exactly box office hits, one is a cult smash (Office Space), while the other is developing its cult hit status (Idiocracy). If you ask me, that matters more.
Amen. Give me cult-status Mike Judge any day over most of the debris currently littering our big screens. From “King of the Hill” to “Office Space” to “Idiocracy,” there has hardly been a misstep or a creative let-down.
“whose last two films were ignored by filmmakers” is one of the most disingenuous comments in a while. While true that both were flops, “Office Space” is considered one of the best comedies of the last 10 years (even by EW) and “Idiocracy” has been moving quickly up the cult classic list as we speak.
When they said ‘ignored by moviegoers (not filmmakers)’ I’m pretty sure they’re referring to how the films were mostly ignored while they were in theaters. I don’t know if you can apply the term ‘moviegoers’ to people watching the movie at home on DVD, when the term ‘goers’ would indicate you would have to go to the theater to watch a movie.
While Idiocracy wasn’t genius, it certainly was an astute look at our culture and where we may end up. Here come the Judge!
Mike Judge has a fantastic ability to look at culture and comment through comedy. I loved Beavis And Butthead, Judge himself did the voice of both the characters, and was brilliant. His film Office Space is an overlooked classic, and Idiocracy is growing on me. Anyway Wooty Poo Go mike uh, huh…
Idiocracy was just painful to watch.
