David Duchovny‘s lawyer confirmed to People on Thursday evening that the Californication star has checked into rehab to undergo treatment for sex addiction. “I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction,” Duchovny said in a statement. “I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.” Duchovny has been married to actress Téa Leoni since 1997. They have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.
In addition to his role as FBI agent Fox Mulder in The X Files TV series and movies, Duchovny also starred for several years as the presenter/host on Showtime’s erotic drama series Red Shoe Diaries, and he currently stars on Showtime’s Californication as Hank Moody, a novelist grappling with a midlife crisis and having a lot of sex.
I don’t understand why we even have to know this. It’s like they announced the issue and then said “but leave him alone”. Who would have known about it if they hadn’t said anything? His poor family is probably embarrassed now. And if you have a sex addiction does that mean he’s been cheating or is Tea Leoni worn out?
Interesting. One of his character’s humorous quirks on The X-Files was his penchant for watching porn. It was supposedly a trait Duchovny himself introduced to the character.
I agree. How about just stating that he is going to ‘rehab for addiction’, period? I’m wondering if they wanted to get the ‘sex’ thing out there to promote the next season of ‘Californication’. Hmmm…

At first I seriously thought this announcement was some perverse publicity for the new season of Californication!
We all know that this was bound to get out, so I’m sure he just wanted to ruin the tabloid exclusive by announcing it himself. We all clicked on this article because we are gossip hungry people, and Duchovny knows that this “want to know” is out there. And to suggest that he just announce a stint in “rehab for addiction” is asinine. That would just leave the public wanting to know more…addiction to what? I do confess to wondering as Jill does if he has been cheating or exhausting Tea. And where does one go for sex addiction? What does the treatment entail?
Elissa, I thought the same thing, that it was related to his show. Not until I started reading the article, did I realize that is was real and I agree with everyone else, it just seemed like they put out a release before the usual rumors began. But maybe that was what they wanted to avoid?
If I were married to Tea Leoni, I would have a sex addiction too, though I would not regard it as a problem….

Let’s face it folks, this guy is addicted to hard core pornography — Cali style — big time. His experimental treatment will probably not be covered under John McCain’s health insurance plan. It should consist of his sitting with his hands tied behind his back and watching videos of his idols who are well hung studs in such flicks as “Big Stallion and Long Dong Silver versus Squeaky Voice Pink Toes”. Each time his electrodes register he will be given a hypothetical crime to unravel, a co-dependent star to make love to, or a criminal villain to unclothe. It’s a tough job, butt somebody’s got to do it!
My parents divorced because of my father’s sexual addiction. It is no laughing matter. It destroyed my father completely and was a source of shame for all of us. It is probably the least-understood addiction out there. It has NOTHING to do with being well-educated or disciplined any more than alcoholism does. This is an illness, and it is devastating. I really feel for his family right now (and him) and hope that they will not have to live with the shame that my family did.
