Director Guy Ritchie’s cast for Sherlock Holmes is shaping up nicely. Not only has Mr. Madonna secured Robert Downey, Jr. as his super-sleuth in the Warner Bros. project, but EW.com has just learned that Jude Law is negotiating to portray Holmes’ sidekick, Dr. Watson. Law recently wrapped shooting Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, the indie movie that marks Heath Ledger’s last official role. With Downey and Law as British detectives, crime never looked this good. Add to it the new Holmes’ villain, British actor Mark Strong (soon to appear in Ritchie’s upcoming film, RocknRolla, and this fall’s Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe starrer Body of Lies). Strong was having scheduling issues due to his upcoming role in Matthew Vaughn’s indie comic-book movie Kickass but it looks like the actor, best known for his role on the British TV series Prime Suspect, has been able to work it out. Production is scheduled to begin in October, getting a jump on the comedy version of Sherlock Holmes that Sony is putting together with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell.

I know it’s a reimagining, but it’s hard to picture Watson being that attractive and young. I do think Jude and RDJ would play off each other well, though, and maybe that’s what matters. After all, Watson has to be there when Homes goes off on his opium trips and starts to pace.
This could become one of *the* most refreshing takes on any iconic story in many years. Should be a lot of fun (If Ritchie won’t kill it, of course).
Hugh Laurie plays “sherlock” so wonderful on House every week. I would make an interesting version for the lead role…
great news. jude is one of our finest actors….having won the british academy award, the olivier award. he was nominated for two academy awards and a broadway tony. not bad for such a young man. besides watson will never look better.
Officially my front-runner in the Sherlock Wars. Well played, Mr. Ritchie.
