you stated “…he was brilliant in his supporting…comedic role in ‘Tropic Thunder.’ He didn’t beat out anybody in ‘Milk’ because that was a DRAMA people.”
— there’s only one supporting category and it covers both comedy and drama.
It’s not like the Globes do a separate category for drama and comedy in the supporting roles. It’s all one category. So yes, Cruise did steal a slot from Hirsch, Franco, and Brolin (take your pick, they were all wonderful). He was funny, but not enough to garner a nomination. Downey Jr. was the best thing about Tropic Thunder (an overrated comedy is you ask me) and his nomination is justified. Cruise, though, for wearing a fat suit and saying “f**k” the entire time? Please, hardly worthy.
I hope the Oscar voters have more wisdom than the foreign press, and nominate Richard Jenkins for best actor for “The Visitor”.
The only thing the globes did right is nominating In Brudges. Great Comedy.
I really hope Brad Pitt wins Best Actor over Sean Penn. Pitt deserves to finally be recognized as a legitimate actor not just a face. I’m also pumped to see In Bruges get some love. I’d love to see it win an award or two. For Director and Best Picture it should end up being a two horse race between Fincher/Boyle and Button/Slumdog. However, it’s sad to see that Dark Knight was not recognized in the best picture category. It deserves to be there more than Rev Road and Frost/Nixon. BS. I’m not sad that MILK didn’t get more nominations. I thought it was a pretty boring film and I don’t understand why people are all hyped about it.
Where the hell is the Dark Knight for picture, director, and screenplay. Screw the globes will take the oscars.
Tropic thunder isn’t overrated. In Brudges and TT are the best comedies of the year so far in my opinon. In why does the HFFP not respect Christopher Nolan? Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, now his masterpiece, and still no love, not even a best original music score.
Ok, I take back what I said about the Tom Cruise/”Milk” supporting actor nomination situation–I had no idea the supporting category didn’t get split into drama and comedy. Now *that* is dumb (but I don’t think James Franco deserved a nomination for his role; maybe Josh Brolin–but either way, Tom Cruise still had one of his most creative roles ever and one of the more creative performances of the past year, so his nomination is much deserved–words I never thought I’d be saying in relation to TC.
At first glance:
BEST PICTURE:
Where is MILK, CHANGELING and especially DARK KNIGHT? The Hollywood Foreign Press will nominate LEGALLY BLONDE for Best Picture but not Batman? But good for Slumdog Millionaire.
BEST ACTRESS- Here I would have thrown in Nicole Kidman for AUSTRALIA.
BEST ACTOR- Where the heck is Clint Eastwood for GRAN TORINO?
BEST COMEDY- Is anyone else shocked (shocked!?) SEX AND THE CITY wasn’t nominated, especially with perennial nominee SJP the lead? What about LAST CHANCE HARVEY? Or THE SECRET LIVES OF BEES? Or MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY? But IN BRUDGES was a welcome addition.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS- Sophie Okonedo for SECRET LIVES…, Amy Adams was nominated for the wrong movie-It should have been MISS PETTIGREW.
SUPPORTING ACTOR- Brandon Walters from AUSTRALIA stole the film.
I’m sure it’s been said but The Dark Knight got robbed.
I call bulls**t on Tom Cruise being nominated for Tropic Thunder. I thought he was awful in that movie, just a desperate attempt to stay relevant.

Don’t agree with a lot of the noms but am so excited to see In Bruges get a few. Colin Farrell ftw!
Also excited about January Jones, she was brilliant this season.
NPH better get that Golden Globe instead of Jeremy Piven. Piven is great on Entourage, but NPH is inspired awesomeness!
