Excuse me, did you really just take it there with that “lily-white” comment?
kingofcities- go do some research and then comment. All of your “issues” have been dealt with on other boards, even on this site.
and yes SallyinChicago for the most part the Heroes are almost always cast with white characters and the villains evil. There are exceptions to the rule and it is getting better but this casting kind of flipped the concept of the cartoon in which the darker skinned inuit based watertribe were the good guys and the lighter skinned firebenders were evil. So M NIght just went back to old hollywood days where all the brown people are bad and white people are good.
This casting is still a joke, as it just reaffirms old stereotypes, specifically as if ALL asian ethnicities are the same and can be interchanged. This is kind of like Roberto Benigni playing King Arthur. It’s just Odd. maybe not racist but really odd.
So casting a visible minority as the villain resolves the problem how…?
The main argument is Aang. If the hero is again Caucasian and is surrounded by Asians/Inuits/Indians. It’s even more offensive as it continues Hollywood’s vision of the world being the “white man’s burden”, like Last Samurai, Dragonball, Forbidden Kingdom, Samurai Girl, just to name a few recent examples.
Wow I really don’t know what to say. I have been anticipating an Avatar movie since I became familiar to the series and though I REALLY love the show I didn’t expect all the venom and conjecture that this film has caused. I love the series and I believe Patel’s casting will make it even better since he is a more celebrated actor and Zuko is such a complex part. I’m booked for 2010 I just hope this whole ordeal doesn’t keep the uninitiated from getting to know this wonderful and beautifully kick ass show. It was one of the best things on tv. Period.
Race aside, I love Dev and thought he was great in Slumdog Millionaire. He will be a good addition to the movie.
What else is new…people don’t get it, rather Hollywood doesn’t get it. Let’s make white people all roles and not go with the original origins. Are they going to have Asian accents while we’re at it? Look, its based in Asia NOT WISCONSIN. GET A FREAKIN’ CLUE people. We don’t have shows of Victorian England with an cast full of Mexicans right? Look I’m Mexican, and I don’t care what you think you can do as an actor, try it all but, for the movies sake, lordy lordy stick the right people with the right Countries okay?
Joe- I don’t care what race the actress playing Suki is. She’s a minor character of the show. Plus you’re representation of the races and the avatarverse just goes to show how much M night is changing the show. The creators of the show specifically did not want any European influences in the look of the show. They say it several times in interviews. If M NIght is gonna change the concept of the show that much why call it “Last Airbender?” He’s taking a lot of what made the show good. The casting at first was offensive. This casting is still offensive but now it’s stupid also.
“He’s taking a lot of what made the show good and ALTERING IT. The casting at first was offensive. This casting is still offensive but now it’s stupid also”
sorry, typo in previous post.
The new kid looks more like Katara’s brother, than Prince Zuko…, I think a more east asian looking actor should portray Prince Zuko.. and not to sound cynical and racist, but why’s the villain the only one rcast as ethnic, why not recast the protagonist with ethnic actors as well… but I digress it is a step in the right direction, maybe if the fans keep it up the others may be recast as well
Dev is cute and he was good in SD, but casting him as the villian is problematic, because the heroes are always white, and usually depicted as pure, innocent etc. anyone non-white is evil and threatning. Same old Hollywood story, except with this film they are feeding these same old stereotypes to children who undoubtably continue to beileve in a racist paradigm.
First off, no, avatar did not take place in Asia. The writers lead us to believe that the story took place in a lost time, so for we all know it could of taken place last year, or even modern jersey for all I care. But seriously, it didn’t take place in Asia, it just incorporated an Asian feel to it. Plus, the North Pole? They were all freaking Eskimos! Aaang, white for all we know. Zuko, probably white, Asian, or both. Also, any fan of the series would remember that they traveled all over the world, and every location had a different vibe to it. From the north pole, to forest, to desert. So the show is an ethnic storm, many dif. races are incorporated. That’s why its fantasy. Why be ethnically correct? Just make a good movie, good plot, GREAT special effects, and don’t disappoint. Stop getting all butt hurt.
It did not take place in Asia, technically, but you would have to be blind not to see the heavy Asian influence in the show. They all read Chinese, for crying out loud. Even their names (Aang, Zuko, Bei Fang [Toph's real name], Suki, Kyioshi Island) are all highly Asian sounding. To say something like “Aang is white for all we know” is plain ignorance of the show’s origins. It is also just about as stupid as DBE’s argument that “Goku is an alien, so he doesn’t have to be Asian”. I’ll buy that crap when they make a Superman featuring an ethnic actor (after all…he’s an alien too, amirite?)
Technically, Prince Zuko isn’t the villain as much as the Anti-Hero to Aang’s hero. So to me, though I think Dev would be more fitting as Sokka than Rathbone, it makes sense since Shyamalan identified himself with Zuko.
Who’s Jessica Jade Andres playing as? Suki? Azula? I’m guessing Suki because playing Azula (Zuko’s sister) would be a lot darker now!
Dev Patel as Zuko is a little less weird than Jesse McCartney… but I’ll have to pretend that he’s just a really tanned Chinese guy!
BTW, is that why Jesse McCartney dyed his hair and eyebrows a very dark brown in the picture???
I’m okay with the casting of Aang. I’ve learned to cope with the live-action Katara and Sokka since they really do look like their characters…but they better get 4 layers of tan! I’m just worried about their ages and height since actor Sokka would seem like a giant!
And yay for Dev!
People are exploding over the only ethnic actor being the “semi-villain”.
People, Noah Ringer is most likely ethnic- since they have a “younger Aang” already revealed and that kid was asian.
So Aang and Zuko, the two main characters, are both likely played by asian-looking people.
