Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail laughed up a hefty $14.9 million gross to lead the Friday box office by a big margin, according to Box Office Mojo. The dramedy is on pace to earn more than $30 mil for the weekend, which could make it Perry’s biggest movie box office success to date. Otherwise, the multiplex was rather quiet in this typically slow Academy Awards frame; the other major new release, Fired Up!, brought in a low-but-expected $2.3 mil. The only thing worse than a Tyler Perry play is a Tyler Perry film.

How is this possible? He continues to make horrible movies and people continue to see them…I don’t get it. I’ve seen the whole Madea gig, it’s not funny. These type of films cater to the lowest common denominator of human intelligence.
and, as always, perry was underestimated. that’s why he’s worth millions upon millions. he’s a shrewd businessman who’s turned low expectations into gold.
That’s pathetic.
I am proud that Tyler Perry realized there was an audience out there that was being underrepresented. Now, if only a capable writer or director would start making movies for black contemporary families. They deserve better.

i still can’t believe that mall cop movie is still making money
Hate on Tyler Perry all you want, but his movies may be low brow comedy drama but he knows what HIS audience finds entertaining and they come out to support him. Most film snobs forget that most people go to the movies to be just entertained and escape reality. After all, look at the success of Paul Blart Mall Cop.
It’s hard to understand the success of TP films that take a comedic look at family values, social codes of conduct, and lifting oneself up from nothing when you’re not carrying a moral compass to begin with. How is it possible that Paul Blart Mall Cop has made over 100 million dollars for a completely unfunny, corny film that caters to the lowest common denominator of human intelligence?
omg, thank god for EW! If you lurk on the comments section of this Tyler Perry movie review on E! Online, there’s like 30 comments actually defending the movie and Mr. Perry! Granted, most of them might have come from the same IP address, but hot damn!
I guess these Madea movies are sort of the 21st century version of those Earnest movies. Next we’ll have Madea Goes To Camp, Madea Saves Christmas. Congratulations Tyler Perry, you’re the new Jim Varney.
Matt 2…get off your high horse buddy. And just so you know, you don’t “carry” a moral compass”. Either you have one or you don’t…it’s not an object that you “carry” around it’s a figure of speech. I have no problem with low brow comedy. I think escapist entertainment is fine as long as it includes some semblance of creativity. I laughed at the first two “Scary Movie” films but Tyler Perry is just taking a lame recycled joke and throwing on a fat suit and a wig. It’s lazy and it’s not funny.
