'Knowing' leads 'I Love You, Man' and 'Duplicity' in tight box office race

Tagged:

Nicolas Cage’s Knowing jumped out to an early lead at the weekend box office, grossing $9 million on Friday. The sci-fi flick thus has the inside edge to win a frame that is living up to expectations as a closely fought contest between three big new releases. Of those competitors, the R-rated Paul Rudd-Jason Segel comedy I Love You, Man fared well, earning a solid $6.4 mil on Friday, while Julia Roberts’ rom-thrill Duplicity was a bit soft, with $4.7 mil. Reigning champ Race to Witch Mountain, meanwhile, banked $3.8 mil and should rise in the box office rankings as families flock to their local multiplexes over the weekend. Friday’s totals are below, and please check back here tomorrow for a full weekend recap in the Box Office Report.

1. Knowing — $9 mil
2. I Love You, Man — $6.4 mil
3. Duplicity — $4.7 mil
4. Race to Witch Mountain — $3.8 mil
5. Watchmen — $2 mil

Now this is a crying shame. I thought this movie was pretty bad when I saw it earlier this week. For all my movie reviews, tv updates and other fun stuff, check out my blog:

I would have expected Julia Roberts’ movie to be the top box office winner. But that 2 to 3 year break between movies that she’s had might have been too long to some and they avoided her for the other competition. That’s a very soft box office start for Julia, not typical of what’s she’s had in the past. Angelia Jolie has stolen some of her A-list thunder the past 3 to 4 years. And I thought that I Love You Man would have been on top, grabbing the male audiences that want to make new male friends and using this movie as an influence. But Paul Rudd is relatively too new to some people, so they went to Nicolas Cage’s movie instead. They like the familiar marquee names back out there and don’t want to see an anonymous name’s movie.Even though Cage’s movie was crushed and slammed by movie critics, it did well on Friday.

Am I the only one who thinks that Julia Roberts looks just like ‘The City’s’ Olivia Palermo in Duplicity?
