'Star Trek' beams up $24 mil at the box office on Friday

Tagged:

J.J. Abrams’Star Trek reboot started off its opening weekend in warp drive, grossing a stellar $24 million at the box office on Friday, according to Box Office Mojo. That opening-day total is among the year’s best: Though behind the $35 mil that X-Men Origins: Wolverine scored in its first 24 hours and the $30.1 mil that Fast & Furious revved up on its initial day, it is basically on par with the $25.1 mil that Watchmen earned on its first Friday. And if you add in the $7 mil that the franchise film banked in late screenings on Thursday, Star Trek‘s starting sum is already around $31 mil. Friday’s box office leaders are listed below, and please check back here on Sunday for a full weekend recap in the Box Office Report.

1. Star Trek — $24 mil
2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine — $8.5 mil
3. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past — $3.1 mil
4. Obsessed — $2.1 mil
5. Next Day Air — $1.4 mil

Good start for Trek, thinking Wolverine will reach 200 million. Good start for summer. Next week Angels and Demons will rule the charts. How much will Trek fall?

The numbers will be HUGE this weekend. These movies tend to do bug on opening weekend because of the huge line-ups of fans (Trekkies). Plus they will be facing stiff competition.

    85-90 million. definitely.

Bet Trek;s numbers reflect the viewing public thinking the opening days will be madhouses and they plan to wait a bit. Also bet Trek’s in the theaters most of the summer and end’s up making serious bucks.I know I plan on waiting at least a couple weeks to go.

I saw the new Star Trek movie yesterday. The story was stupid and the plot holes were big enough to drive the Starship Enterprise through. I am so disappointed with JJ Abram’s vision of the franchise. He had Spock and Uhura hook up like high school sweethearts. Kirk didn’t get any girls, except the slutty green one, and then they made him Captain before he graduated from StarFleet Academy. It was insulting to the audience and the special effects were well done by ILM, but nothing amazing. Save your money and go see a movie worth your hard earned $10.

AMAZING movie. I’m seeing it again this Sunday in IMAX after seeing it at a Thursday night screening. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie twice in one weekend, but this one is worth it.

  • Chris Pine is HEAVENLY

I LOVE THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE!! If this is the way star trek is gonna go in their future sequels, i’ll be the first one in line!! Oooh and of course, CHRIS PINE IS YUMMILICIOUS!!!

  • Tom Strong

    Chandler Rogue is a retard.

  • Dwight K Schrute

Chandler, sorry Trek went over your head. Maybe you should go see something more your speed, like Wolverine.

I agree with black button. I’m thinking the Saturday and Sunday crowds are going to be even bigger than the Friday night crowds- 80 to 85 million by the time actuals roll in Monday. And I’ve got Monsters vs Aliens as my number five movie with about 4.3 mill. Families are eating that little charmer up in bundles; especially on weekends. Don’t understand Wolverine’s precipitous drop (30m to 8.5m in one weekend), unless it’s the leak effect.

Was prepared to love it…only to be disappointed by a really silly plot and poor explanation as to how and why Spock Prime was able to meet up with Kirk. (Guess what? Pure chance. Gee.)
Really, really, really makes no sense, and yes it IS a plot hole, and ruins the movie at least for me. I’m no fool, I’m a Mensa equivalent, and let me tell you: if I find a plot hole, it is a REAL plot hole. I’m also a novelist.
Also, I saw this in IMAX. Warning: don’t bother seeing this in IMAX. It is a wasted experience.
I’m a huge Trek fan, but will not be bothering with the sequel to this film. This is what happens when you let the idiots who wrote Transformers write the Star Trek screenplay.

The box-office thing is getting old. Studios are spending $50 million on marketing campaings for there big summer films. Of course there going to do big numbers in weekend one.

Chandler. A few points to remember. 1- Kirk was never the skirt-chaser he was made out to be by pop-culture. He loved really one woman in his life and that was Carol Marcus. Spock is half-human and did indeed have emotions. He simply hid them. There’s no reason why he should be celibate. As for Kirk being made a captain so quickly, Roddenberry put the ungraduated Wesley Crusher on the Enterprise as a bridge officer. If you can swallow that from Trek’s creator, this new movie’s plot shouldn’t be a problem.

I’m really surprised this movie didn’t do better. Even got beat by Fast and Furious. That’s embarrassing. Angels and Demons is going to burry Star Trek next weekend. The best news to come out of this story is that at least it won’t be sold out when I try to go see it tonight.
