Or they will just find 5 failed prestige pictures to shoehorn in there.
Oh no!!! This would push the telecast from 3 hours to almost 4-6 hours. BORING!!!
This is a grand idea! There have been so many stunning films put out already in 2009. I t will be interseting to see which are chosen to be nominated. The extra nominations will mean less snubs and much, much more anticipation. I might even watch next year.
I really really really hope Star Trek is up for Best Picture because I thought it was an amazing movie!

Add my nme to the list of people who agree with Dan that this isn’t a good idea. Even with ten nominees, if you don’t have the accompanying director and screenplay nods, you’ll still be dismissed as a complete long shot. And on a personal note, it just means that memorizing the main nominations every year will become that much harder. None of us are getting any younger you know!
I think this is a bad idea. As others have said, this is a move to get more viewers, like asking Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron to attend the ceremony. By having films people have seen and forcing them to watch the whole telecast until the end is horrible and a ploy for ratings. Again, this makes the nominations seem lest prestigious, since now 10 DVD cases will have “BEST PICTURE OSCAR [nominee].” This also shifts the time Oscar contenders are released… the September through December films will now be expanded for the whole year. The academy really did not think of the repricussions of this change.

Star Trek for Best Picture nomination!!!!!!!
i agree with dan an academy award nomination in itself was special, not just a win. Now a nomination won’t be all that spectacualr for a film. I liked it better as an exclusive party rather than an all out everyones invited bash..just my opinion

Okay, maybe Nine, cause those women are AMAZING and Daniel Day-Lewis makes me swoon as Guido.
YESSSS!!!! NINE and INVENTION OF LYING MUST MUST MUST be nominated. These films will make the other 8 contenders shake in their boots. I’m praying Invention of Lying wins Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. I also agree they should add Best Ensemble like the SAG awards. If the Academy does add this category…. not going to lie, Invention of Lying should win this as well.
This is amazing. I wonder so much if this isn’t so much as to return to the historical roots as it is to get some good ratings back to the ceremony. But, enough Debbie Downer. This will make Oscars a lot more exciting and thrilling to watch instead of being boring and sale because everyone knew who was going to win.
It is a good move, now at Oscar time they can expand the best picture of the year to include some movies that the public actually enjoys and goes to see. As opposed to the esoteric, self congratulating, and political crap that they ram down our throats every year.
Long time coming, but even the tunnel vision morons at the heads of the s
I’m torn. I think it’s great that films Oscar voters would normally overlook have a shot at being nominated. (Not to mention giving even more stellar films a boost in viewership.) But it also seems like a big ol’ ratings ploy. Not cool, Academy.
What does this mean for AMC’s Best Picture Showcase?? I can make it through five movies, but ten might take two days. Yeesh!
