'Bruno' tops the box office with $14.2 mil on Friday

Tags:

A gay Austrian’s dream to become “uber-famous” came true, as Sacha Baron Cohen’s new mockumentary, Bruno, topped the box office on Friday, according to early estimates. Bruno, which pushes its R-rating to places never before thought possible, grossed $14.2 million on Friday. By comparison, Cohen’s previous mockumentary, Borat, made $9.2 million on its first day; however, Bruno debuted on more than three times as many screens as Borat (2,756 versus 837). Second place went to the third Ice Age movie, which consumed $8.7 million on Friday while evolving past the $100 million mark. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen dropped 58% in its third week for a gross of $7.6 million. While that steep of a drop would spell trouble for most movies, Transformers has already tallied $323 million in the U.S. (not to mention more than $330 million overseas), so we doubt Paramount is shedding any tears. In fourth and fifth place were Public Enemies and The Proposal, which picked up $4.3 million and $3.5 million, respectively. Also opening wide this weekend was the teen comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, which clearly could have used more love — it registered a dweebish $2.1 million. Friday’s figures are below. Be sure to check back here on Sunday for the complete weekend box office report.

1. Bruno — $14.2 mil
2. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs — $8.7 mil
3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — $7.6 mil
4. Public Enemies — $4.3 mil
5. The Proposal — $3.5 mil

Its sad that this is the kind of trash people spend their money on. In addition you make this guy rich

  • Bobby

I wouldn’t go see Bruno if you paid me to go.It looks like the biggest pile of crap I ever saw.

If you’re a huge homophobe or just are plain out grossed out by dicks and gay situations, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. I thought it was hilarious though.

  • Ianaleah

There was one hilarious scene, some predictable amusing scenes, and mostly gross, crass, uncouth scenes. There were several people walking out w/o returning at some parts of movie. the scene with the baby and male sex in hot tub was hate generating. Definitely heterosexual unfeeling porn and S&M and a totally misogynistic guy who being gay implied gay men hate women. The scenes humilitationg Ron Paul and also Paula were offensive and insensitive. Actually, the entire movie was insensitive-especially in the scenes where the actor could clearly see the people were miseraable and continued anyway because he simply did not care how they felt or what they thought.Since we humans have imagination and can create, we all are noble and deserve respect. None was shown in this film. Sasha Baron Cohen definitely placed greed as priority in his decision making reagarding the movie. But think whatever you want.

    @Brian
We live in a world where horrible movies like Paul Blart, Wolverine and Transformers made massive amounts of money, you really shouldn’t be so surprised.
This movie at least got decent reviews, unlike those ‘winners’.

I thought people already understood that Sasha Baren Cohen acts out extremes to show other people’s reactions. I haven’t seen Bruno, but in Borat he said terribly offensive things to show how people responded (sometimes uncomfortable, and often they agreed!!). He exposes people. You should know what to expect at this point if you go see the movie. I know I will.

Well given the massive ad campaign im not surprised its doing well- doesn’t hurt that most ppl like it – it got 86% on CrazyCritics

I think all your haters are just too uptight. Don’t see the movie if the subject make you uncomfortable. Plain and simple.

  • Bobby

Hey Rich, that tells you how dumb the critics are to give this steaming pile of crap a good review. That is the sad part.

  • Hannah

He does not sound like he is from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, or Australia so… what kind of an accent is he even going for?

  • krisenhiazen

Bruno is a genious! The movie was drop dead hilarious!

  • jessica

Bobby, how do you know it sucks if you admit you haven’t even seen it?

  • Bobby

Did you see the trailer for it?That’s all I had to see, because I thought my eyes were going to start bleeding because it was so horrible.

  • that’s not entertainment

It’s not showing hatred or being homophobic to not want to go see a movie where some guy is shoving his junk in your face and performing outrageous acts of depravity, then questioning the reactions of those who happen to be his victims. A movie about an A$$hat parading around as a gay journalist is one thing, but when you set up deceitful scenarios just to provoke outrage, don’t expect a pat on the back for that, much less think the majority of Americans are going to respect that kind of garbage as entertainment.
