you 16 to 24 year olds kill me.Stop trolling. I was going to see this movie but there were way too many good reviews. The only movie IMHO that was worth the hype in recent years was The Dark Knight. I also said screw it to the Transformers and Gi Joe. I’ll catch the hurt locker soon.

    • UpChucked

You’ll like the hurt locker even though it resorts to some silliness towards the end. It’s pretty accurate considering my son was there for two tours back in the early and mid 2000s.

Saw it this weekend and have to say, District 9 is one of the best flicks I have seen in a theater in memory.

Absolutely stunning. Awesome, loved it. When will they begin filming District 10?

I wish I was priviledged enough to see this movie already. Its set in my country, South Africa, yet already released in the USA and now I havta wait, the 3rd world wait is what they say. Just a note on freedom, its 2009 and we realistically still many yrs away from genuine equity in our society. A small minority who gained the most during apartheid still gains the most today, 15 years after our first official non racial vote! Thats the power of capatilist economics and thats just here, so many places of despair throughout the world. Its sad. So though Apartheid is officially iradicated here, the effects are still felt throughout our society! District 6 in Cape Town, South Africa is a infamous and beautiful stretch of land on the border of the Cape Town inner city. Its from District 6 that thousands of people were forcably removed from their homes when the group areas act was enforced by the Apartheid govt. To this day, the restitution process for District 6 continues as the current government tries to restore this barren land to the people of the area with some dignified houses etc. I wonder if the movie has some reference to District 6. Will have to wait and see. Looking forward to the local release of District 9 here!

This movie was lame all the way around. The story line had potential but fell flat on its face. The dialogue was embarrassing, the acting mediocre, and individual scenes were just not believable. In the end, the Chris alien … why were they such good buds? This theme was never developed and all of a sudden they have campy dialogue and risk their lives for each other. Even the documentary style “interviews” were weak. Now I know why people were walking out.

    • UpChucked

Well they were walking out because they were watching this in Kentucky for crying out loud! :)

  • Monroe

There depection the Africans were offensive to me

One of the best sleeper movies of all time. The Fifth Element. They have a shoot out in a garbage heap. Another classic. Bladerunner.

My favorite lived-in spaceship is the Serenity. It`s not sleek, gleaming or polished and neither are the people on it.

Nice call on Outland. Always been one of my favorites since i was a kid in 1982. I love sci-fi(not syfy, btw) like this, so we have to take our hats of to the originator of the look, or style of “truckers in space”.

ALIEN was the first one I recall with this aesthetic.

The relationship between Wikus and the alien Chris Johnson in this movie really reminded me of the movie Enemy Mine…so much so that I am going to have to go and immediately put that movie on my Netflix list.

  • Danno

I hate to be “THAT GUY” here but let’s face it. If you are posting about how much you didn’t like this movie you just didn’t get it. Alegory is lost on most people. Especially those expecting a mindless sci-fi actioner.

    • UpChucked

Biggest hole in the story was the total lack of why the ship became stranded here. Maybe there was something about that but I obviously missed it.

    • imissianto

Don’t be insulting, Danno. The allegory in this movie was completely transparent. I wasn’t expecting a mindless sci-fi actioner, I was expecting an original one. And while this was good, original it was not. Just because others didn’t like it doesn’t mean your positive opinion of it is meaningless. But you don’t need to go challenging people’s ability to grasp allegory (like it was so difficult to do here…). Anyhoo…different strokes, different folks, all right?

  • neo

I loved Firefly and Serenity. Loved Blade Runner. Liked the look of Outland but never loved that movie. I agree that episodes IV-VI of Star Wars have the “lived in world” look; the rebels are on the run after all, right? Alien was another good call.

    • UpChucked

I’m sorry but outland was a terrible movie. Talk about holes in a story? Outland was a miserable excuse for a movie in as far as it’s plot was concerned. Nice art direction – but the story did not work at all.

  • Fried Prawn

For a movie with a low budget, the CGI was fantastic. The prawns were very realistic in how they looked and “interacted” with the other actors. I thought the first part, although slow, was very interesting in how it established the setting, characters and the history of the marooned aliens. The guy who played Wikus was so believeable when he was talking to the camera that it really seemed like it was a real documentary.

  • Vin

Well, it is GREAT enough to make $73,000,000 in 10 days! Great movie, I am telling EVERYONE to watch it. Superb story and unexpected from beginning to end. I rate it a 10 out of 10.
