In the second of three video chats looking back on the summer movies of 2009, Lisa and Owen get animated, suffer a chick-flick hangover, and celebrate the indie movies that connected.
Here's Part I of our Summer Movies Wrap-Up (Transformers, Star Trek, Public Enemies).

The thing is that I would watch The Hurt Locker if it was showing near me, but it isn’t. They would make more money if they showed it in more places.
Yeah I really want to see it, but it’s not showing in my city. That happens a lot with Indie films.
Hurt Locker was good, but I think I’m suffering from war movie fatigue….and it didn’t wow me enough to jolt me out of that blazay feeling.
UP was awesome. I saw it twice. I can’t wait to see what Pixar does next.
The Hangover was a pleasant. I did not expect that movie to be that FUNNY! Best comedy of the year!
Harry Potter was BRILLIANT! I could NEVER be “Pottered out.” There are so many movies because there are 7 books. It’s not like they’re just making sequels to be making them. I can’t wait to see Deathly Hallows Part One and Two. Maybe Owen will like it more since the usual format is completely gone in DH because the trio don’t go back to Hogwarts. But anyways I can’t wait!
mrtape – I agree. I live near a large city, and yet only one of the big mainstream theaters was showing The Hurt Locker. If I hadn’t spent the extra time to find out where it was playing, I would not have found it. It never showed at the 22 screen theater that I always go to.
That being said, wow what a great movie!
I thought UP was way overrated, visually great, but really not that funny, and the talking dog thing and the stupid looking bird were just dumb.
I agree it wasn’t the best Pixar flick. I still prefer Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Owen must not be thinking clearly because I think Harry Potter just gets better and better everytime. You can’t get tired of a story that great. I did see the Hurt Locker and if it doesn’t get nominated for an Oscar then that will just be disgusting. The Hangover was wicked! i will be getting that on dvd.
In some ways, you are right. The talking dog scenes were kind of for the kids, but the story itself… How can you not love it. It was sweet, sentimental, and most of its comedy was underrated highlighting important messages and telling a great story.
I agree. And it bothers me that it’s a forgone conclusion that Pixar and Up will win the best animated film award at the Oscars. Coraline was so much better.
Where does it say that animation has to be a laugh riot funny? It is this kind of thinking that gets Madagascar, Shark Tale, and Shrek made, which are really just a serious of humorous vignettes instead of real, coherent story telling. I never went into UP thinking for a minute it was going to a comedy. It is a story of life that has its sad and humorous moments, but at the end, it is the richness and uniqueness that rates UP as one of the best movies of the summer.
I thought ‘UP’ was great, harry potter I really didn’t like. I was boring, done before, and got nothing done. While i’m talking about praised movies that I really didn’t like was District 9. I thought it was god awful!
Up and District 9 were definitely the standouts this summer, surrounded by a dozen or so disappointments. Hopefully next summer will be better.
I loved District 9m and actually enjoyed Wolverine.
Up was fantastic, but i hope in the third part of this video mini-series both critics share their picks for best movie of the summer. My favorite movies of the summer (in no particular order) were 500 days of summer, Up and Inglorious Basterds.
I saw The Hurt Locker and it’s the best movie so far this year.
Transformers was the movie of the summer. District Nine was stupid and anyone who liked it must be easily amused. G.I. Joe was a decent action movie but could have been better but all around if a movie has good action then it tends to be a good movie but District Nine really dropped the ball. Come on people.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think UP and (500) DAYS OF SUMMER were my two favorites. Check out my site for a full list of movie reviews — quite a few got grades of B+ or more. So go see some this last summer weekend!

The Hangover was a piece of crap. Sorry but homophobic, racist and sexist jokes just don’t float my boat. I was really saddened to see how this movie became so loved by critics and audiences. Is Lisa on drugs? This is a funny movie? This is a movie that had its act together?
I say romantic comedies have become confused – are they supposed to be cynical? Whisically romantic? Realistic? Are the characters supposed to be caricatures? Relatable? I think that’s the problem with that.
sorry justin, wanted to correct you. Im sure you meant to say that District 9 was the movie of the summer, and Transformers was stupid, and anyone who liked it was easily amused, right? I mean, I dont feel like District 9 was THE movie of the summer, but to say it was stupid compared to Transformers… just wanted to give you a chance to correct what you obviously typed in wrong.
