Box office report: 'The Final Destination' barely beats 'All About Steve' for the Friday box office crown

In a neck-and-neck race at the Friday box office, horror holdover The Final Destination (No. 1, $3.58 million) narrowly edged out Sandra Bullock’s All About Steve (No. 2, $3.57 million) to take the lead at the beginning of Labor Day weekend. But the win might be short-lived: Horror movies traditionally play strongest at the start of a weekend, while a female-focused pic like Steve has a better shot of wooing daytime audiences on Saturday and Sunday—and in this case, Monday, too. Third place went to the sci-fi action pic Gamer, starring Gerard Butler, which took a lukewarm $3.3 million. Still going strong thanks to good buzz, Inglourious Basterds (No. 4, $3 million) and District 9 (No. 5, $1.75 million) rounded out the top five, while the weekend’s other wide release, Extract, only managed $1.4 million for seventh place. Be sure to check back tomorrow for three-day estimates, and again on Monday for the final Labor Day numbers.

1. The Final Destination — $3.58 million
2. All About Steve — $3.57 million
3. Gamer — $3.3 million
4. Inglourious Basterds — $3 million
5. District 9 — $1.75 million

Why would anyone want to see that All About Steve movie. It looks awful. I’m actually sad for Sandra Bullock that she felt she had to accept being in this movie.

    • B

It must’ve been the fact that she produced the movie, Chris.

It’s a testament to Sandra’s star quality and ability to open a movie….even if she has a critically bad movie.

      • Mike

SHe was n contract to do this movie. I read that she has to star in three moveis and this is number two and the first was the proposal. soo it’;s not really her fault the movie sucks

Oh leave Sandy alone. It looks funny and good for her for making something funny not just sappy.

    • Sandra Fan

I agree. Please leave Sandra alone. She makes alot good movies.

      • ugh

        No she really doesnt
and this movie doesnt break that trend

There were many great movies by Sandra. There’s Murder by numbers,While you were sleeping,Speed, Miss Congeniality and The Proposal.

      • ugh

great is not a good word for those movies

I like Sandra Bullock, but to say she makes “great” movies is really absurd. One could argue that “Crash” was great (it did win best picture), but all the others are pretty bad with the exception of a few. Speed, Miss Congeniality and While you Were Sleeping were good movies, not great. She is an actress that doesn’t stay far from her comfort zone. She should because when she does(Crash) she is very good.

As usual EW was completely wrong in its weekend box office predictions. How can a magazine that devotes itself to entertainment always be so off with the box office? I have nothing to do with Hollywood and I posted that Gamer wouldn’t have any “game” despite EW predicting that it would be # 1.

The weekend isn’t over yet. They still have a chance to prove themselves right.

      • Jeff W.

True, but I can’t envision any scenario where Gamer will be #1. I love movies and I’m a big nerd but I’ve never even heard of the damn thing.

      • EWfan

Well I agree with you there. I heard a little about it but not too much and no reviews.

    • EWFAN

You were right. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. You know your stuff.

I agree with Chris. All About Steve is the type of movie you get from Netflix and then send it back 3 days later without ever watching it. It looks dreadful. Sandra Bullock consistently chooses absolute crap to star in. She needs to fire her agent. I’m embarrassed for her.

Sandra Bullock has picked alot of great roles. She was really great in The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds.
      It was very very funny.

      • Jeff W.

I disagree. I reluctantly watched The Proposal and found it to be a paint-by-numbers predictable story with little quality. Sandra did a respectable job with the weak material, but she’s far better than her film choices. She should be involved in films like Rachel Getting Married rather than the vapid films she usually associates herself with.

      • ugh

The only thing good about that movie was Ryan Reynolds.

Sandra Bullock’s only good movie is Speed, which she destroyed with Speed 2

you could say Crash, but shes barely in it

As for her acting ability, shes pretty good, but she needs to fire her agent now, and never pick a role where shes as annoying and needs to be punched in the face as the role in All About Steve

The net was great. I loved it. She’s a great actress and has a down to earth girl next door quality.

  • peg

Can’t wait to see it love her and love her acting! Real talent no like Jen Anniston who plays the same role over and over and over…Rachel…

  • Brynna

Just got back from seeing All About Steve! It was both hilarious and fun. The theatre was packed and everyone was laughing. Cheesey and strange it may have been, but overall a fun, fantastic movie!

  • Joe

Um Chris, check your facts. She had ths movie written for her. She didn’t feel that she had to ccept it.

  • Julie

Saw all about Steven utter crap Mind numbingly awful. Still like Sandra but seriously bad movie.

  • Julie

Meant all about Steve already forgot the name it was that bad.
