Tyler Perry is on fire. The filmmaker’s latest movie, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, burned the rest of the competition by grossing $24 million, according to early estimates by Hollywood.com Box Office. In only five years, Perry has made eight films, five of which debuted at the top of the charts. I Can Do Bad represented the director’s third-largest opening, trailing Madea Goes to Jail, which put away $41 million its first weekend earlier this year, and Madea’s Family Reunion, which tallied $30 million in 2006. Audiences liked what they saw too, as I Can Do Bad, which stars Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as a nightclub singer, earned a solid “A” rating from CinemaScore moviegoers.
The post-apocalyptic animated flick 9 took second place with $10.9 million in just 1,661 theaters. The PG-13 toon, which premiered on Wednesday, has cumulatively earned $15.3 million. Third place went to Quentin Tarantino’s sturdy Inglourious Basterds, which dropped only 44 percent in its fourth weekend to capture $6.5 million. The violent WWII pic, which has so far grossed $104.3 million, should pass Pulp Fiction this week to become Tarantino’s highest-grossing movie. Rounding out the top 5 were two holdovers: The Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve (No. 4 with $5.8 million) and the 3-D horror movie The Final Destination (No. 5 with $5.5 million).
The weekend’s two other new releases failed to leave a mark. The college slasher Sorority Row pledged $5.3 million, which was enough for sixth place but far behind the recent openings of The Final Destination ($27.4 million) and Halloween II ($16.3 million). The Kate Beckinsale thriller Whiteout, which is set in Antarctica, froze on arrival with a mere $5.1 million. The single penguin employee in Antarctica’s tourism office won’t be uncorking that bottle of champagne tonight.
In limited release, The September Issue — the documentary about Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour — expanded into 111 theaters and grossed $730,000 for a fashionable per-screen average of $6,577.

The movie was okay but the ending was a bit cheesy. It was so abrupt that it seemed like they ran out of money and had to wrap it up. I’m a fan of T. Perry but he could use the assistance of a professional writer or two. Slap stick humor is not my favorite kind. I wish that I could say that this movie represented growth but honestly it was as silly as all the others (excluding Why did I get Married and They Family that Preys)
What movie were you watching. This movie was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It always bums me out when crap makes a ton of money because it guarantees more crap. Tyler Perry has made a lot of crap because of this. The masses are asses.
Tyler Perry’s movies are annoying, and slapsticky, but crap? ::shrugs::. He’s not in the same cinematic slum as Transformers 2, that’s for sure.
no JPX you’re an ass.
Transformers kicked ass,and if you can’t accept that why don’t you go get in line for your tickets for the next Twilight.
They are BOTH dumb. One is aimed at juvenile boys and the other at juvenile girls.
“Transformers kicked ass”- further proof that 12 year olds with mental disabilities also pay to watch movies
Well I guess there were a lot of 12 year olds that paid to go see Transformers, how about 401 million dollars worth.
I found that this was probably one of Tyler Perry’s better films…behind “Why Did I get Married”. He does have the same formula for the “Medea” franchise. “Down and out girl meets hunky average Joe who changes her life”, but it’s working for Tyler Perry. Yeah, the ending was a bit cliche’..but it was a pretty good movie. And Cheryl Pepsii Reily singing for Taraji P. Henson…awesome!!
I wish Tyler Perry would make a movie all about Madea and have Madea in funny situations or something could he do one movie where no one gets raped or is a victim or sexual abuse.
Us juvenile boys like our robots and our explosions.
I love Tyler Perry’s work. His production plays are an entertaining way of getting a positive message of letting God help you through any situation we get into out to people. Bringing those plays on to the Big screen is an extra venue to reach larger audiences. If you know T.P’s work, it all about the message.
I love Action movies, but to compare it to TP movies? It’s like comparing it to WWE to Church.
And if you’re not down with that,I got two words for ya…….
Ooooooo…DX reference!
Stop crying WONDERING AND POSTING! THE VERDICT IS IN! TYLER PERRY IS #1 AT THE BOX OFFICE.
This is one of Tyler’s best movie!
This movie is on the same level as Family reunion & why did i get married.
Hey Bobby, guess you got me with your comeback.. oh wait, you didn’t.. Crapformers 2 making 400 million dollars only show that yes, America sadly is full of 12 year old retards.. and you just proved it by defending your dumb argument by saying Crapformers should be consider a great movie because it made a lot of money.. you know what else makes a lot of money? Cocaine, and we all sure agree that’s not good for you
I never said it was a “great movie” as you say,I said it kicked ass,but now that you mention it,it was a great movie and there are a lot more people that think that also.
Isn’t that the guy from Star Trek?
I think this TP movie was one of his best movies of all times. This was a very good well put story. I really enjoyed it. He portray a lot of Madea roles in all his plays. Madea had a role in the beginning of the movie. Then Taraji P. Henson did her thing. She is one of the best actress, and to let her play a main role was a smart choice. Why not let TP help parents and young girls see the way of everyday life. Girls get raped by a family spouse everyday; and I’m glad TP finally made that part of a story. Why not give him the credit, of how talented he is. I would like for him to come with a part 2 of this story.
stupid penguin joke.
Excellent, excellent, excellent. I think its one of the best yet. Can’t wait for the DVD to come out so I can see it again.
