Box office: Friday's numbers put 'Couples Retreat' in the number one spot

Tags:

As expected, Couples Retreat dominated the box office Friday, pulling in an estimated $12.3 million for the day. The numbers portend good things to come this weekend for this Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau-starring comedy. At this rate, the film should gross in the high $20 million range for the three-day frame. Sony Pictures’ Zombieland and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs took the number two and three spot with Friday’s grosses at $4.7 million and $3.1 million respectively.

The big surprise of the weekend was the activity from Paramount’s uniquely marketed Paranormal Activity, which grossed an estimated $2.5 million for the day. The number is astonishing considering the R-rated horror film only played in 158 theaters, putting its per-screen average at an unbelievable $15,975. (As a comparison, Couples Retreat per-screen number is $4,110.) Also, now that over 1 million people from around the country have logged onto the website ParanormalMovie.com to request it play in their town, the film will open nationwide beginning Friday, Oct. 16. Quite impressive for a film that cost only $11,000 to produce.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Disney’s Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3-D experiment which garnered an additional $2 million for the day. Check back here tomorrow for the weekend’s Top 5.

Americans like this kind of movie, how sad!

What does “this” pertain to? Several movies were mentioned. If you’re going to insult Americans than be more clear. Also learn how to punctuate. Where the hell did you go to school at? If you want to point out that “Americans” are idiots, don’t be an idiot as well.

Don’t confuse “then” and “than” when calling out others for how they write. Just saying.

      • sbwm

Right – also don’t end a sentence with “at” if you are trying to exemplify proper grammar.

hmm a blanket statement insulting all Americans!.. Mr. Bean was a British Film but I don’t hold that against all Brits!

For someone who likes to criticize grammar, you’re not doing so hot yourself. Don’t end a sentence in a preposition “Where the hell did you go to school AT?”

      • Paul

You’re right, sentences should never end with a preposition. It should have read “Where the hell did you go to school at, moron?”.

YEA!!!!!!!! PARANORMAL ACTIVITY FTW!!!!! I’m gonna see that movie!!!!!!!!!!

  • lindsey

Doesn’t Couples Retreat have around an 8% on Rotten Tomatoes? How can the critics and the audiences have such different opinions on the same movie? I will never understand that.

    • Bobby

      Critics are rockheads.

      • Fatima

Well if critics are rockheads for disliking Couples Retreat, consider me a rockhead.

To be fair, just because people went to see it doesn’t mean they left the theater happy. Thinking it’ll have low audience score.

  • Kyle

I think mebe they should open it nationwide next month so they can promote the movie a little more!!!

It looks as if October has been a decent month for movies at the box office so far. Paranormal Activity produced for $11,000.00 and grossing nearly 3 million dollars in less than 200 theaters is simply huge. Wide release dollar figures next Friday will be a special kind of incredible!

Ugh. The only reason we went to see Couples Retreat was Paranormal Activity was sold out. There were some laughs, other than that… it was just bad.

  • maiv

i went to see zombieland this weekend and there were massive lines waiting to see a movie. i’m thinking it was paranormal activity, which was pretty nuts!

  • MICHAELLE

Paranormal Activity SUCKS. Mind-numbingly AWFUL movie. Period. My sympathies to those that have been brainwashed to join the herd-mentality and bought into the propaganda and HYPE about such a insipid makes-zero-sense less-than-mediocre cinema GARBAGE.

I went to see this movie last night (because my girlfriends were trying to cheer me up – after husband left after 26 yrs of marriage this week – what were they thinking?) and it was packed – and everyone laughed at absolutely nothing. Poorly written and cheaply produced.

  • Zombie Humor

I haven’t heard ONE bad thing about Zombieland. Everyone loves it.

  • jon
