I bumped into a friend last night who happens to be an Oscar voter (not to mention a shrewd Oscar campaigner), and during our conversation, Read the full post.

I indeed agree that both Star Trek and The Hangover should be best picture nominees cause they are AWESOME! We need some awesome non lame movies in there. I mean last year most of the best picture nominees were lame and total boring. Sure they were “artsy”, but not cool.
Although there were some good movies this year, none of them so far have screamed “OSCAR!” District 9 was good, but no Oscar-good; Star Trek was good, but its not going to win one either. I could see a lot of contenders for being nominated in “Outstanding Visuals” and stuff like that, but as far as I’m concerned the only movie that has come out this year that has consistently been praised and has had the most universal appeal is “Up.”
I think Up should win some awards, best movie of the summer in my opinion.
I havent seen the hangover, but i loved Star Trek i saw it about 5 times i loved it. it is defintently oscar worthy, Plus every year the acadamy nom. the worlds STUPIDIST, RETARTEDIST, AND INGNORANT FILMS EVER! At least Star Trek was good .
I’m not one who thinks that the Academy constantly nominates the best films of the year, but I generally at least enjoy most of the films that receive awards. There are some really terrible “Oscar-bait” films – but some of the worst, like “I Am Sam”, are generally rightfully ignored come Oscar-time.
There’s no doubt that the Academy generally award those films that fall into a certain niche of filmmaking, and if they really had balls (and really wanted to be awarding the best of the year) they would have a bit more variety: a few more mainstream features, yes, but also a lot more foreign and truly independent productions. There are a lot of bad films made in all those categories – but there are some darn good ones too.
And Caleb, here’s a hint for when you grow up and possibly hit puberty – not liking something does not make it the stupidest, most retarded, most ignorant thing ever. The ignorant thing is actually funny, because at that point it becomes rather clear that you’re just throwing out “mean names” even if they don’t really apply to the movies being denigrated.
The Hangover is one of the worst, most lazy comedies I have ever seen. If it gets a Best Picture nod I will boycott the awards for about ten years
Sorry Dave, but I’m a gay man and found the “paging Dr. F—-t” moment to be one of the best in the movie. My husband of 14 years and I laughed to the point of embarrassment at that scene. And I was still laughing two days after seeing the movie. Not offended in the slightest.
It’s so annoying that all these snobby folks with no credibility whatsoever have the gall to voice opinions bashing legendary directors and calling the Academy voters “idiots.” Seriously, people? What exactly does your opinion represent? Random outbursts of unqualified anger? Jeeeez.
cool
Loved Star Trek, really liked Hangover, but if one summer movie has to be nominated, I’d go for District 9. It was my best of the summer, and I’m sure academy voters would at least perk their ears at the whole Apartheid parallels.
Agreed about District 9. Very strong film.
