I’ve made it pretty clear how much I love Spike Jonze’s movie Where the Wild Things Are. Read the full post.

Most of Stephen King books translated into movies or miniseries are disappointing (though I keep hoping.) There are two beautiful exceptions to that; Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me. Both great stories and great movies.

The Lord of the Rings books seemed to drag on forever; but the films were amazing!

Some of my favorite adaptations: The Princess Bride, About A Boy, Forrest Gump (the book is almost unreadable), LOTR
I’m torn re: Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I like the movie for what it is, which is cute, sweet, a nice little PG-13 romance. But the book is awesome and geared more towards an R, even though it’s “young adult lit.” Certain changes suit the movie just fine (like I said, it’s cute, and the soundtrack is killer), but the things from the book that are missing–the dark edge, the more realistic sexuality, the snark–would have served the movie just fine. 13-year olds weren’t going to see that movie anyway, so I just don’t get why they had to tame it down so much.

This one may seem to come a bit out of left field, but “Troy” is probably my most disappointing adaptation of a novel (or in this case, an epic poem). After reading “The Iliad” in school, I re-watched the movie “Troy” and it was almost laughable how inaccurate it was. And here’s the kicker: anybody who has ever read this poem, or any Greek poem like it, knows how important a role the Gods play in Greek literature. They’re everywhere. But that didn’t matter to Wolfgang Peterson. He was quoted as saying that he left out the Gods because “they were trivial and unnecessary to the plot.” And that’s the kind of attitude that explains why Hollywood fails more often than not when it comes to faithful and satisfactory film adaptations.

I still think that Fincher made Fight Club BETTER than the book. Choke, was a bust!

NO Country for Old men, of course was awesome.

I cannot wait for The Killer Inside Me coming out next year. If Casey Affleck does half as good as he did in Gone Baby Gone (great adaptation) and Assassination of Jesse James (another great book to film!) this movie will be amazing.

I am still waiting for The Road. I have my mixed feelings about the commercials, but again, John Hillcoat did an amazing job with the Propostition, so this movie should not disappoint! It better not, its my favorite novel!

Best book to movie adaptation – Interview with the Vampire. Everything that was in the movie was in the book. Then again, Anne Rice did write the screenplay so it didn’t go too much off course.
Worst adaptation was Queen of the Damned. I was yelling and screaming at the screen while watching the movie. I was so ANGRY at the movie.

A little late to the party but here goes:
Someone posted the Michael Crichton Adaptations but forgot Timeline. It was so bad. The casting was strange. Don’t really think Paul Walker can act, but this was probably cashing in on Fast and the Furious.

Children of Men. This book was amazing. I went into the movie hoping, but it came to naught. Where the book had ONE scene of extreme violence the movie had a HUGE gun battle. The ending was a mess and they changed everything about the book except the character names. I kept saying ‘that wasn’t in the book’ over and over again. So disappointing.

Half-Blood Prince: I didn’t like the adaptation. I liked the movie as a movie, but as an adaptation it kinda sucked. There was no sense of urgency of doom at the end. The Death Eaters just walk out? What kind of battle was that? The death left me with an ‘eh’ type feeling, where in the book I was sobbing during the funeral. I understand that the book was mostly in flashback and they did the best they could. I do like that they started pushing the R/H relationship. I don’t like David Yates as the director. I wish they had found someone else, but he was asked if he wanted to do movie 7. so we’ll have to see how they explain all the important stuff that was left out of 5 and 6.

I love the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. I like bits and pieces of the 2005 version, especially Darcy walking across the field. But there are historical inaccuracies that just bug me. And the fact that Emma Thompson was asked to help with the screenplay says something.
I loved her version of S&S.

certainly like your web-site but you need to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to inform the reality however I’ll surely come back again.
