I loved Malkovich, and loved Adaptation even more… but Jonez really pitched a dud with this one. Saw it this weekend, and could barely stay awake. Chances for Oscar? I’d bet more on its chances to put people to sleep. Too long and too plodding to be any kind of serious contender.
If anyone from Where The Wild Things Are is getting an Oscar, it should be Max Records. He’s pretty much in every shot and he runs a complete span of human emotions. He carried this film, give him a statue.
I had never read the book, so went into the film knowing nothing. On the one hand, once I realized that none other than Tony Soprano was the voice of Carol, it was surreal hearing Tony’s voice in this children’s book/film. Although I wasn’t bowled over by it in general as I was watching it, I ended up crying at the end. I counseled youth for 10 years, and by far the deepest pain I’ve ever seen in kids were kids whose parents had divorced. Max wants “the perfect family”, but it’s gone. The pain of that has created tons of feelings that he doesn’t know how to handle, therefore the dream of the Wild Things. Oh yes, and give Catherine Keener an Oscar for that very last scene.
I am absolutely positive this movie will be nominated for Best Picture and deservedly so. I also think Best Adapted Screenplay will happen. And if the Academy is smart, Spike Jonze will get a nomination for Best Director. His willingness to fight the studio to protect his vision is the real reason the movie turned out so well.
Dear people who didn’t like this film f you did your research Sendak worked in colabiration with jones and eggers for 2 decades to write the script so yeah it needs to have an Oscar!
