Jim Sheridan (In America, The Boxer) is back at the box office this season with his war-themed drama Brothers. Based on Susanne Bier’s film of the same name, Brothers centers on a young man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who comforts his older brother’s wife (Natalie Portman) and children after the brother (Tobey Maguire) goes missing in Afghanistan. Check out some exclusive photos of these young and talented actors. The film opens on Dec. 4. (More photos, and the trailer, after the jump).

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out:

I can’t wait to see the movie. I’m a huge fan of all three.
ok. well that trailer looks really good but as with so many trailers these days – i feel like i just saw a summary of the entire movie.
This looks great. I’m a huge fan of Jake and Natalie.
i think this movie is going to be good but will it be able to catch the eyes of critics
Looks really good! I love all three actors.
I’m super excited to see Tobey Maguire in something other than Spider-Man again. He has talent!
It reminds me of the “plot” of Pearl Harbor.
Thats excactly what I said when I was watching the trailer! Haha, I was like “this seems familiar”
I said the same thing too! It’s like Pearl Harbor but set in the modern-day war. But it still looks really good. A bit more gritty than Pearl Harbor.
That’s ridiculous. How can you compare this with that piece of garbage? And the guys in Pearl Harbor weren’t even brothers.
Pearl Harbor was not a piece of garbage and this movie is a rip of of pearl harbors plot
It reminds me of Coming Home.
…and Bruce Dern should have won the Oscar for best supporting actor
Pearl Harbor was a period piece though, and Brothers is set in modern times. I think a wider audience will appreciate Brothers
i just just glad that they are playing brothers b/c i think they look a lot alike. a long time ago, before i really knew he either of them were, i thought they were the same person! so thank you casting people of this movie!!
Interestingly, Tobey Maguire was injured when they started filming one of the Spider-man movies (I think the third, but I’m not sure) and Jake Gyllenhaal was being considered for his replacement in case he wouldn’t be recovered in time to film…
I’d like Natalie Portman to handle my light saber.
This looks really good. I hope Maguire in particular gets some attention. I thought he should have been nominated eons ago for Wonder Boys. I think people forget that before Spider-Man he was an extremely capable dramatic actor.
Wow, I had forgotten what a gifted actor Tobey Maguire could be with good material.
the original was excellant!
LOVED the danish film “Brothers”. If it’s an exact remake of the original Danish film…be prepared for some heavy-duty scenes with Tobey Maguire’s character.
I’d avoid watching the trailer if you’re at all curious about seeing this..the original was really great but the trailer IS like ‘Spoiler-Alert City’
Where is Michael Strahan?
hahaha! nice.
bahahahahaha!
The original that this movie is based was fantastic. Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) played the wife-but for some reason I find Portman to be too young to play this part. Susanne Bier made another movie, called “After the Wedding” that’s pretty good as well. She makes very good family drama type movies. Hopefully Sheridan can recreate his In America magic with this film.
I was looking forward to seeing Brothers but after Natalie Portman signed the Roman Polanski petition defending child rapists, I am boycotting all of her and the other signatories’ work. Sorry, Jake, Tobey and Jim – but I will have nothing to do with a child rape apologist.
Oh get over it, the victim has even said to forget about it. and she was 13, so while not legal, she was not a child
What?!
Are you joking? At 13, she was not a child? So, you would be okay if you had a thirteen year old daughter who was raped and sodomized by a man in his thirties? Because it’s not like she’s a child anyway. What happened to that girl was terrible, and I feel terrible for her, especially the fact that she is still dealing with this so many years later. However, what if a celebrity’s daughter were the one it happened to? Or Dakota Fanning? Would it be okay for the person who did that to just waltz around for decades afterward facing virtually no consequences and get sympathy from other people in the “business”? Somehow, I don’t see many people feeling the same way about that.
Okay. Number one. I don’t know where you’re from but someone who is 13 years old is most definitely still a child.
Number two. Did you even read about the case? It was not a case of a 13 year old “consenting” to sex (I put consenting in quotes since a child cannot consent and therefore it would still be considered rape whether she wanted it or not.) but she explicitly and repeatedly said no. So her age does not even matter. Whether she was 40 or 13, it was RAPE. Not just statutory rape, but plain straight up RAPE.
Number three. While I empathize with the the victim, ultimately what she wants doesn’t matter. He committed a disgusting crime, he needs to be punished. That’s the way it is.
Why can’t people understand this? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.
With that said. I am conflicted because I do enjoy Natalie Portman’s acting work but rape apologists drive me insane. Sigh.
