this film will in any format it is watched, it was made for 3D so obviously it will look jaw-dropping in 3D, but still look amazing in regular format, there is no this film doesnt get nominated for a Best Picture, im gonna predict 7-8 nominations with 5 wins (mostly technical categories) and a Special Achievement should be awarded to James Cameron for his huge contribution to cinema
Let’s see: Dances with Wolves – epic film, dude goes all native, warfare and biracial love ensues. The Last Samurai – epic film, dude goes all native, warfare and biracial love (sorta) ensues. Avatar – epic film, dude goes all native, warfare and bi…er…interspecies love ensues.
What do these films have in common? Well, two out of three were nominated for best picture. Let’s face, the academy likes this format, films with an epic scope and shaped by war, romance and incredible visuals. It may not be Gone with the Wind; however, with 10 nominees, James Cameron’s latest epic seems to be more than a longshot for Best Picture.
I feel like the Academy increased the number of contender slots in order to “young up”- open up a bit to the more mainstream films like the Hangover, for example. It makes the show more welcoming towards movie fans that aren’t solely watching docs, indies, biopics and period pieces…plus they are able to justify inviting Zach Galifianakis!
Anyway, I’m sure Avatar will be nominated- the question is, will Academy voters be broadminded enough to nominate Avatar AND Star Trek? That’s a toughie!
Another question- why does Avatar qualify as BP and not Best Animated Feature? Couldn’t it technically be both?
P.S.
I thought I was safe here.
This article has not one thing to do with Twilight, so I felt all cozy and protected as I read the comments.
Alas, you cannot read one single EW article’s comments without being insulted by a TwiHater.
If avatar is a major bomb how will that affect James Cameron’s net worth?
Wow…people seem to really like to take a hit at Avatars storyline…wonder how many of you knew that the idea for this movie is 20+ years old. James just didn’t think that it was right time to release it with technology not being of his liking. I think this movie is a great example of how far CGI and motion capture can go in a movie. I mean 60% of the movie is animated! Crazy if you ask me.
Where are all the Avatar bashers now? $1.81 billion and still going yet its a smurfs in space movie, bad story line, blah blah. The numbers speak for themselves. It’s not just hype that churns those kind of dollars. It would be a disgrace if it wasn’t nominated for POY and should win it. I love the people that bash this movie yet would nominate Hangover as best movie. Don’t get me wrong it was a good movie but nowhere close to the masterpiece Avatar is. The acting in Avatar was top notch. It was 60% animated yet the actors did 100% of the acting/movement/facial expressions/voice of the CGI characters. They should get awards too. The level of development that went into this movie was unprecedented. If you haven’t seen in 3D IMAX, then you are missing out. I never heard of any Dance with Wolves or smurf movie that was this successful. I guess everyone spending that $1.81 billion likes bad movies. Enough said. Enjoy
This is what it takes to make an epic movie -
