'New Moon,' 'Twilight,' Bella Swan, and me

As many commenters have pointed out in posts both gentle and not so, my review of The Twilight Saga: New Moon is a mild one. Read the full post.

Lisa I am glad you gave the movie a fair review and also for your clarification here. I found so many other critics’ reviews to be so biased–as if they were just filled with contempt for the genre before even walking into the theater. I’m not sure why this movie stirs up so much hate. This movie WAS NOT BAD. Thank you for recognizing that. No, it’s not Oscar-worthy, and I understand your lack of enthusiasm for it. But I support you in your review, I think you were fair, and the accusations that you were somehow forced to give the movie a good review are ridiculous. Keep doing your thing!!

    • Sally

to be honest, I think that anything which received this much coverage would get a lot of hate.
If people went to ew.com, and saw like 10 Harry Potter articles each day, eventually people who hate Harry Potter would start to complain.
I remember when Twilight first became popular and articles were published…there wasn’t a lot of hate.
I’m a fan of the books (not the movies though), but I can understand that people are tired of seeing a ridiculous number of Twilight-related articles each day.
I think that some haters take things too far and can be disrespectful to the fans though.
It’s one thing to dislike a book or film series…but it’s another thing entirely to make rude and/or offensive comments about its’ fans.

    • dbth

you are right fans of lord of the rings, star wars, the matrix, star trek never get made fun.

      • D

That’s because majority of the fans of those franchises are male, the target audience. Let’s not forget that sexism is alive and well and “girly” stuff is something to be despised/ashamed of.

That said, the coverge is over the top and bound to induce hate. Having never read the books, I can’t comment on their quality, but the films are well-made, albeit cheesy (but still likeable). And yes, Bella is no strong heroine, but I gather that’s how she’s written. Oh well.

      • dbth

obvisously you don’t understand sarcasm. fans of those aformentioned films are ridiculed for their obsession of those movies

      • Celia

Harry Potter fans don’t either…to my knowledge. It has such a universal fan base that it’s hard to pinpoint one age group, race, or sex who loves it because everyone does. But there’s definitely a stereotype associated with fans of franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, and other sci-fi.

  • Ashley

I actually thought the movie was a pretty bad summery of the book, i love the books, but as with most book-based movies it didnt really do it justice for me. im not a die hard cut my wrists for robert fan but i like the story.. but i do think u need to get the whole story to appreciate it.

  • Lola HARLAND

.As a seventy year old grandma I saw the movie and also Twilight with my twelve year old grand daughter. I loved the movies .I had bought and read all four books. Lets face it every movie is not going to be an oscar nominee. These were tough books to screen play. I felt it was a movie for the young,or Young at heart. I was especially pleased to see so many of our First Nation youths included in the cast.Judging by the hoots and hollers of the young women in the audience when the hunky shirtless boys came on the screen they were not dismayed. It was a happening and a lot of fun!!
    sincerely

I think reading the book is important. I disagree that bella seem to need a guy all the time. Her character in the book is an independent girl, but sometimes when you fall inlove, it makes you weak. New moon shows the depression part of love, ,and the hopes and chances for others who can fall for her. Anyways, I like the movie and I think it was done right. Part two was kinda the boring of the four books, and the movie did a good job in discovering jacob.

  • Paige

What I find interesting is that some of you are complaining about what a whiny and weak character Bella is, and she can’t do anything for herself…and yet here you are listening to a movie critic and caring about what she says. It’s her opinion. Have a mind of your own. I never listen to critics because I rarely agree with them. There have been many “Best Picture” nominees and winners in the past with glowing reviews that I thought were just awful. And, there were some movies that overall critics hated, that I liked just fine. It’s very simple – if you want to go see it then go see it. Form your own opinion. I personally don’t like either critic for EW, Lisa or Owen. I hardly ever agree with them. But, that’s MY opinion. I’m sure Lisa won’t lose sleep over that.

    • Celia

I saw the movie online and it sucked. I don’t care what the critic said. Everyone’s point is that it deserved a lower rating than it got. Her review was pointless because she didn’t even bother to defend her B+. Everyone’s dispute is that EW is giving the film a positive review that it doesn’t deserve just because they’ve had their head stuck up twilight’s butt for the past year or so. As far as I can tell, that IS them forming their own opinion. They’re trying to get Lisa to do the same and not just say she liked something for the heck of it.

    • Shamrock

Paige, you make no sense and are missing the whole point of the discussion.

      • Paige

Then by all means, enlighten me with your dazzling display of philosophical BS.

    • Fatima

That’s the most illogical argument I’ve ever heard in my life. And it still probably took 10 minutes to think of. Reading a highly literate and knowledgeable source on movie’s review is equatable to needing a man to dictate my life. THUD.

      • ash

        LOL

  • Phil

Ok, Paige, now play devil’s advocate. Say you’ve NEVER READ the books, but decide to check out the TWILIGHT movies, cause you are honestly interested in vampire lore & movies. Being unbiased & having no emotional attachment to the series or the characters…it makes you TRULY understand how horrible the movies are, and thats what most TwiHards fail to accept or reaalize. So imagine when you already aren’t a fan, then disappointed with the movies, AND THEN STILL HAVE TO HEAR ALL THESE PEOPLE PRAISING A POOR PRODUCT!? You’d be kinda cranky about it too, wouldn’t ya think?

    • Paige

Ok, Phil, I will. I have read all the books several times. I personally love the books. I love the characters. But, I admit it is a fluff read. It’s not Of Mice and Men. I never wanted it to be. I also admit that Twilight was not a good movie and disappointed me. I think New Moon was much better than the first. But, what you are saying is that you went to see a movie that you did not care anything about seeing, and did not like it, and disagree with everyone who does like it, right? That would be like me going to see the Batman or Spiderman movies because of all the hype, not liking the movies, and then complaining about all the people complaining about it. WHY did you go see the movie?

      • BilbrosB4Hos

        Agree with you, Paige.
I wouldn’t expect this series or New Moon to appeal to someone named “Phil”. I (29 yr old female) also wouldn’t expect to walk into Tomb Raider or Transformers and love it.
It’s not for me, and it’s not their fault – it wasn’t ever meant for me. And I’m not going into articles and slamming those movies either.

      • Phil

Paige, you must be a freaking moron. A HUGE MORON. Why did I go see the movie!? As I stated in the first sentence BECAUSE I ENJOY VAMPIRE MOVIES, and because honestly, I have an open mind, I enjoy comic books, supernatural and sci fi. I’m NOT A HATER. But as I clearly already said, I’m NOT A BELOVED FAN WITH BLINDERS ON. WHY ARE U PEOPLE SO WACKED THAT U DON’T UNDERSTAND THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIVE, EAT, SLEEP & CRAP OUT TWILIGHT!? This is what upsets me SO MUCH. You don’t pay attention to the people who could care less.
And the REAL REASON I went to see the movie!? My friend Alicia (27 YR. OLD FEMALE) who also has never read the books, or even seen the 1st TWILIGHT wanted to go when we were out Friday night. I explained to her that not only did I HATE the 1st one & I skipped the press screening of NEW MOON earlier last week, but because she wanted to go, I said, OK. So Paige, You may be a daft fool thinking a ‘Phil’ might not appeal to New moon, but then you’ve boxed yourself intoa corner, since I am a good friend, and a good person & would sit through crap like that cause a friend asked me to. I hope you’re not teaching your kids those same stuffy morals you’ve got going on. Happy Thanksgiving..and I’ll be more thankful when people like you and Bilbros join the rest of us in the real world!

      • BilbrosB4Hos

Okay, Kanye, enough with the caps lock. Does anyone need to shout about Twilight…really???
Phil, I think all we’re saying is that the reason you didn’t like New Moon is because you’re not a fan of the series. And that’s okay. But understand that fans of the series DID like the movie. And that’s okay too.
Lighten up, dude. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for you.

  • Hermione

I think “a bit of a drip” is totally accurate terminology when it comes to Bella. Our society claims to be progressive, “equal,” and gender-blind…and the film version of “New Moon,” the self-absorbent chronicling of a girl’s total lack of personality and any sort of agency, enjoys the 3rd-biggest opening in the history of cinema. I’m interested to see what sort of reception “Breaking Dawn” (which, unless the source material is drastically altered, will document in gory detail a woman’s literal changing of her own self in order to be with the man who imbues her existence with its specific value) receives. It’s disturbing to think that a series which constitutes, in the end, a celebratory reaffirmation of The Cult of Domesticity draped in the guise of ~ShIrTlEsS~VaMpIrEs~aNd~WeReWoLvEs~oH~mY~ is so incredibly popular, especially with young girls who identify role models and fantasies in its pages and onscreen. The most disturbing thing about the Twilight universe isn’t the bloodthirsty vamps. It’s that feminism never happened.

    • ash

Please the only reason it’s popular is cos of robert pattinson and taylor lautner’s abs. Before the former was cast nobody had heard of it,except the tennage cast. Even the cast hadn’t heard of it.

      • Celia

Agreed. The only reason I heard of it was because Robin Pattinson was cast in it and I knew who he was because of Harry Potter.

  • ERIK BEWARE

    2 WORDS ~ YAWN…

  • hannah

she does not drive edward anywhere, because when they go somewhere together they take his superior vehicle, the volvo (however it is not silver, but black, for some unfathomable reason) jacob only drives when bella is shaken because of some emotional upheaval or physical inhibition. he is, after all, not technically supposed to drive, being only GOING on sixteen through a good portion of the book. i also thank you for being so kind in your review! a lot of people have been down oin it, and i don’t think that’s warranted!

  • Phil

Nope, you’re wrong. I’ve seen it twice and the only time she is not driving her own truck was on the way home from her birthday party after her arm was stitched up where Edward is driving, and then after she almost drowned when Jacob is driving. Otherwise, she is driving every time.

  • MARISSA

i think HANNAH has the rite idea. if you dont know things dont say crap about it!!!!!!

  • sharti

    awsum movie with awsum cast
i guz im waitin for the next release of the twilight saga
edward n bella deserve the oscars!!!!!!!

    • Celia

OMG! You did not just go there. I think I’m going to vomit. Not only is your spelling disastrous, but you just praised the acting and said it was Oscar-worthy?! I can’t even…I just don’t know what to do! You must be joking. That’s the only conclusion that makes any kind of sense.

      • jenn

        lol @ Celia! Kids, man.

      • BilbrosB4Hos

I try to be patient because I do realize that 12-13 year olds post here, but I get so irritated that they seem to have no grasp of vocabulary and the English language.
Besides, I’m pretty sure I know what a shart is…do you??
        Sharti indeed.

  • webdiva

I can’t put my finger on why the Twilight books are so appealing, but I confess that they are — still, the most irritating thing about them is the fact that Bella isn’t as independent as she should be in this day and age. Clearly, Bella’s intelligent, but in New Moon she doesn’t use any of that native intelligence to start coping better. Then again, who of us at 17 finds it all that easy to cope with being abandoned by our first true love? I remember being pretty feisty and unwilling to take any crap from guys (I take even less now, which is to say none, and no prisoners, either), yet I can’t believe how much leeway I was willing to give the guy I loved first, nor how long it took me to get over it. Hormones and eye candy are hard to fight, even with experience (but that’s what brains are for). Too much drama! We all do it, at some point, then we learn from bad experience and hope not to do it again — and for Bella, it was her first serious affair. Sure, we want her to snap out of it; but if she did that too easily, it wouldn’t be the great love it’s supposed to be, now would it?

I should also point out that author Stephenie Meyer is a nice Mormon wife and mother from Arizona, not a career woman or modern-day feminist manning the barricades for progress between the sexes; what did anyone expect?

Bella is a conundrum. While in Arizona, she took advanced placement coursework in high school, and she shows it in biology class when she meets Edward; yet in New Moon, there’s no sign of the brainy side of her at all, and that’s not credible. but at least in the book, she and Edward argue at some point about Shakespeare, specifically Romeo and Juliet. It’s not a discussion worthy of bardologist Harold Bloom, but they’re not embarrassed to be discussing it — which is more than you can say about most teens today. One wonders if they read Shakespeare at all, let alone for fun. And New Moon the movie doesn’t do anything to flesh out that intelligent side of Bella. Disappointing. Very.

I have to wonder whether Catherine Hardwicke would have done a better job on that point. I suspect yes, but then Meyer’s book doesn’t give her much to work with, in this case. We have to wait until the later books for Bella’s nerve and insight to surface again. Sigh …

Well, at least with the next film they’re back in the Columbia Gorge again, and with luck, we get to see the luscious Hike House and lovely surrounding area once more.

  • webdiva

Um, correction: that’s the Hoke House (not the Hike House — typo before) in far suburban Portland on the Washington state side of the Columbia River, which is the gorgeous modern house used for the Cullen residence in Twilight.

  • Darrin

Lisa – I appreciate you reading and responding to the comments of your review, something your colleague Owen seems unwilling to do. But, this explanation doesn’t clarify your grade at all. You admit the movie was “just ok” and is more a product than art, so what in that justifies a B+? Can’t you say something like – B+ for Twilight fans, C for everyone else? Your review and column here point out that you think the film had way too many faults to have earned the grade you gave it, so I’m still a bit confused.
