I’m very surprised at how wide the release for Fantastic Mr. Fox is, but it can’t possibly do nearly as well as Up. Don’t get me wrong, Wes Anderson is my favorite, but most people still don’t recognize him.
Ponyo was Miyazaki’s worst story-wise, in my opinion. The animation was incredibly vivid, creative, and imaginative, but the story lacked when it came to conflict and appeal. It never truly drew me in.
Coraline was so pretty (which is seriously the first thing that drew me in). The story was well written, which is expected with any book adaptation. The stop-motion animation made it stand out from all of the others, though.
Up, however, will get my vote (which won’t do any good) for the best animation of the year. I am a worshiper of the Pixar cult, but even I was astounded by the level of complex emotion, story telling, and gorgeous animation. Wall-E was amazing, yet I was much more engulfed in the plot with Up. The character development didn’t hurt at all. By far, my favorite outing from Pixar.
I haven’t seen Fantastic Mr. Fox, but it looks pretty good coming from the previews. I’m not sure if the story is all there, even if I am a huge Roald Dahl fan. I’ll go see the new Disney Princess film just for the sake of it being a Disney 2D film. I doubt it will be up to the standards of recent movies from that studio, but who knows. I would watch it even if it tanked with the critics, because it looks so pretty.
It’s hard to judge an animated film on story and character when all you can see is gorgeous visuals. All of the other aspects usually get pushed behind because they are animated films.
(Side Note: Am I the only person who is dying for Michael Giacchino to get a nod for Best Score? If it was for Up or Star Trek wouldn’t matter, I just want to see him win for once. His music always has a combination of simplicity and emotion that brings me to tears. Even if he didn’t win, I would clap at the mere mention of a nomination for him.)
I think Michaeal Giacchino is one of the most hard working underated composers right now… Star Trek, Lost, his Pixar trifecta (Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up), Cloverfield…. Just to name a few of his masterpieces…
Having seen both Up! and Fantastic Mr. Fox, I felt Fox actually had more child-like emotions in it and I preferred it to Up. After a while Up got awfully heavy-handed and the 3-D animation got less and less interesting. Fox just seemed more magical to me. They are different kinds of films, though, and I wish they wouldn’t be pitted against each other because they are both good children’s movies. I just found I could relate to Fox much more.
Someone mentioned that Fox is aimed at Wes Anderson fans. In this case, I think a general audience will have no trouble enjoying it. The animations is so well done and those critters are just so irresistible.
Put frankly…NO! Fantastic Mr. Fox has about zero chance of beating Up for the Best Animated Film Oscar. Maybe Coraline, maybe Ponyo, but nope not Fantastic Mr. Fox.
i hope fantastic mr. fox wins. It was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, animated or not. although i loved up too, for me, nothing can top fox this awards season.
