'The Blind Side' rises to the top of the box office with $6.8 mil on Friday

As is typical for the weekend following Thanksgiving, Friday was an underwhelming day at the box office — but that shouldn’t prevent Sandra Bullock from Read the full post.

you ppl are out of your minds– lets see the big picture here both the Blind Side and New Moon are not blockbusters they are low budget movies– harry potter and the dark knight should never compare to these– lets face it the dark knight made loads of $$ because a major character in the movie died & both the dark knight and harry potter had huge budgets and years of pre&post production time to be made perfect– as we all know low budget movies like the blind side and new moon dont get those advantages– so lets be happy that indie movies are making this much $$ and placing this high w/such a low budget– and dont count out the New Moon fan base yet w/the you get a call from 1 of it’s stars for the person who sees the movie the most (which btw worked w/the previous twilight movie) will keep it in the top 5– fyi i’ve seen it 8x and i plan to go back just because i really like it :P

The reason why new moon has a relatively low budget and has to be shot in 3 months is because the studio is gready. They don’t want to spend the time and money to make a better movie because they know there is a pre-existing fan base from the book that will take whatever crap they produce. They know the fans will watch it regardless of the quality. They rely on shirtless guys and heartthrobs and use mediocre special effects. They are rushing to release the movie to exploit the heat cos they know they work is shabby. They made enough money from twilight that they could have spent more money and time on the movie to make it better but they chose not to. It is also a popular franchise so yes we can make the comparison. But I can see the reason why the box office numbers are so high is becase of people like you who will watch this crap 8 times. Enjoy your next trip.

This. This so hard. Two of the big things I remember people complaining about when it was announced that they’d do the New Moon movie were A) how quickly they were going to start filming, even when they didn’t even have a director signed to the project yet (Chris Weitz was signed as director then had to start filming the next week or something equally ridiculous, from what I remember. How’s that for pre-production!), and B) how little they were willing to spend on it, regardless of how much money Twilight made them. If the budget is small and the production time short, it’s the fault of the studio that plans both of those things. They knew New Moon was going to be huge. They could’ve taken time to make it better, and they could’ve spent more money on it. They chose not to, because they knew it’d be a hit anyway, and they wanted to release it quickly to take advantage of the hype while it still existed. And they were right, weren’t they? The fans made them rich, regardless of the quality of the movie. I don’t know. If I were a twifan, I’d want more than what they gave me. I mean, at least spend some money to give those kids some acting lessons.

We live in an age where a long, sustained box office run is far more impressive than a big opening because it shows good word of mouth.

New Moon is experiencing the opposite: it’s not appealing to anyone other than it’s (admittedly massive) core fanbase.

Two stories are developing with New Moon’s box office; its huge opening weekend and, now, its huge drop-offs. Not that EW would have the guts to impartially report the latter.

I’m not sure why ppl are even comparing Harry Potter and Twilight. Who cares about box office right now? Years from now HP will still be a classic and Twilight will be gone. That’s where the real money is – longevity.
