'Inglourious Basterds,' 'Nine' lead Broadcast Critics nominations

The Broadcast Film Critics Association has released its nominees for its 15th annual Critics’ Choice awards, and a pair of Weinstein Co. movies (Inglourious Basterds and Nine) led with 10 nods each, followed by Avatar with nine. The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air, and Precious all fared very well overall. Missing from the BFCA’s list of 10 Best Picture nominees: Star Trek, The Hangover, The Lovely Bones, and (500) Days of Summer. You can follow me on Twitter (@davekarger) for Oscar updates.

ha — beat you by a minute

  • GoMe!

This pretty much is exactly how the Oscars should be…except maybe 500 Days getting a “Best Picture” nom…other than that, I love it!

  • conor O’Brien

should that be a SINGLE man in the best movie category?

    • Andrea D

Probably not- The Coen Bros made A Serious Man, and of course most of us haven’t seen it yet!!!!

      • Paul

A Serious Man is actually a very good film if you get a chance to see it. It’s kind of haunting and has stayed with me ever since I saw it three weeks ago. One of my favorite Coen Bros. movies so far.

      • Mark

A Serious Man is crap. I’m a Coen brothers fan, but this movie is all over the place and makes zero sense. The forst ten minutes of the movie have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of it! Bad, bad movie.

      • RustyT

A Serious Man = meandering muddle, an excruciating and unrewarding film to sit through (and I am normally a Coen Bros fan). Seriously, avoid that one like that plague.

  • conor O’Brien

should that not be a SINGLE man in the Best movie Category?

  • Bob

Why would the Lovely Bones be on this list? It was not favorably received by the critics, so I guess its omission is not a surprise to me

  • Rob Grizzly

Broadcast Cirtics went to 10 noms also? Hmm..

It’s awesome they have a Best Action movie category. And their Best Animated is expanded to 5. The Best Visual Effects noms are exactly right, and I think it’d be cool if this Award show was aired (on cable or something). I’m a whore for Award shows

    • Ama

They have always had ten best picture nominees.

    • Chris

      It’s aired on VH1.

  • Coley

they really should’ve nominated 500 days

  • chris

Uhm – Why the hell was Leona Lewis not nominated for Avatar? Puhlease.

    • fancypants

or Mary J. Blige for “I Can See in Color” from Precious?? let’s hope they both get Golden Globes noms (out tomorrow) and Oscar noms.

  • Bob G

Inglorious Basterds in the Original Screenplay catagory? Shouldn’t that be in the Adapted Screenplay list?

    • Brian

It was Tarantino’s version not what you would call an adaptation.

    • Kelsey

Why would it be in the adapted category?

      • Meier

Because it’s loosely based on the foreign language B-movie Inglorious Bastards.

      • Kelsey

Even though Tarantino borrowed the title and they’re both WWII “guys on a mission” movies, that’s pretty much where the similarities end. It was obviously an influence, but Tarantino’s screenplay has to be considered original.

  • Paul

I’m an admirer of Tarantino and the Coen brothers, and not usually a major fan of action movies. However, “District 9″ was IMO a FAR better movie than either “Inglourious Basterds” or “A Serious Man”.

    • ks

Glad I am not the only one who feels this way

  • paige

seriously, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs??? they just had to throw DreamWorks a pity bone didnt they?

    • Q

“Cloudy” was produced by Sony Animation, not Dreamworks. Dreamworks released “Monsters Vs. Aliens”.

      • paige

        oops my bad

  • Laura

I’m sad that Bright Star was almost completely shut out. And Weinstein must REALLY have sway with the BFCA, because how else do you explain that two of his films got nominations (especially since Nine is getting such poor reviews…). Oh, and this solidifies that Sandra Bullock is a major contender for a Best Actress nomination.

  • paige

    ugh Sandra Bullock… gross

  • RyRyNYC

I am really glad to see Emily Blunt picking up some steam… it would be fantastic for her to grab an oscar nod. Especially in a category that seems to just have three out of five on lock (Streep, Sidibe, and Mulligan)

  • GRANT MACDONALD

Inglourious Basterds is a masterpiece. If GETTYMOVIE the Getty/Hitler trilogy attains half the respect … then there is true justice in the movie industry.

    • Meier

That first sentence… a reference to the final line of the film?
