Here are the nominees in the movie categories for this year’s Golden Globe awards. Up in the Air scored the most nods with six. The trophies will be handed out on Jan. 17 at the Beverly Hilton. Please follow me on Twitter (@davekarger) for Oscar updates.
Best Picture, Drama
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air
The big omission here is Invictus, which was recognized for Best Director, Actor, and Supporting Actor. The HFPA’s late-in-the-game love for Avatar killed its chances.
Best Picture, Musical/Comedy
500 Days of Summer
The Hangover
It’s Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine
I’m surprised the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man was left out. If only it had had bigger stars in it, then I’m sure the Globes would have liked it a bit more.
Best Actor, Drama
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Tobey Maguire, Brothers
For me, the morning’s happiest surprise was Maguire’s inclusion for the completely underrated Brothers. I would’ve like to have seen The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner in there as well, but he was overcome by star power.
Best Actress, Drama
Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Blunt’s totally convincing portrayal of The Young Victoria should make her a stronger contender for an Oscar nod as more people see the film. I fear Bright Star‘s Abbie Cornish is all but gone from the race now.
Best Actor, Musical/Comedy
Matt Damon, The Informant!
Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine
Robert Downey, Jr., Sherlock Holmes
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 500 Days of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man
I expected The Hangover‘s Bradley Cooper to pop up here. But it’s cool to see Downey in his place for the rollicking Sherlock Holmes. I pray Matt Damon has a shot to win this one.
Best Actress, Musical/Comedy
Sandra Bullock, The Proposal
Marion Cotillard, Nine
Julia Roberts, Duplicity
Meryl Streep, It’s Complicated
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
There’s a chance Streep could split her own vote, but my hunch is her turn in Julia will emerge victorious.
Best Supporting Actor
Matt Damon, Invictus
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
No big surprises here except the lack of Alfred Molina for An Education. Many HFPA voters were bigger fans of Peter Sarsgaard in the film; clearly neither one of them had enough support.
Best Supporting Actress
Penelope Cruz, Nine
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Mo’Nique, Precious
Julianne Moore, A Single Man
The most predictable category of the morning.
Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
James Cameron, Avatar
Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
The snub here is Lee Daniels for Precious. But obviously the Globe voters went for the biggest names on the ballot. Have two formerly married directors (Bigelow and Cameron) ever competed against each other?
Best Screenplay
Neill Blomkamp & Terri Tatchell, District 9
Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker
Nancy Meyers, It’s Complicated
Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner, Up in the Air
I can hear all you District 9 fans jumping for joy! I’m surprised An Education and Precious didn’t make it in here.
Best Score
Up
The Informant!
Avatar
A Single Man
Where the Wild Things Are
I love the eclectic mix of this race. Pop, jazz, classical, rock…they’re all here.
Best Song
“Cinema Italiano,” Nine
“I Want to Come Home,” Everybody’s Fine
“I Will See You,” Avatar
“The Weary Kind,” Crazy Heart
“Winter,” Brothers
The Globes usually go for the songs sung by the better-known performers. But it’s cool to see T-Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart) mixed in with tunes performed by U2 (Brothers), Paul McCartney (Everybody’s Fine), and Leona Lewis (Avatar).
Best Animated Film
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs
Coraline
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Princess & The Frog
Up
This one’s a race between Up and Mr. Fox.
Best Foreign Language Film
Baria
Broken Embraces
The Maid
A Prophet
The White Ribbon
It’s either Cannes winner The White Ribbon or Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces.

Hooray for Inglourious and Christoph Waltz!
He was truly amazing! That man created pure evil on the screen. He is by far the best deserving. Especially since this was his first American film.
Waltz was AWESOME in Inglorious. IF he doesn’t win there is something wrong in the universe.
Yay! So happy for Sandra Bullock (no love for ‘The Blind Side’/Proposal’ though???)and everyone involved with ‘Precious’!!!
Wait… she DID get love LOL! She was nominated for both of those movies. Although I’m kind of sad that Ryan Reynolds didn’t get nominated.
I think he/she means the movie didn’t get any love other than Sandra’s noms.
Exactly, I was referring to the movies themselves, not the actress
Thanks, dj!
I love me some Sandra but The Proposal???? Really?!?!
WOw, they really want to honor Sandra for the hit that she makes this year.. But i do think Sandra was great in The Blind Side but not really awards worth in The Proposal.
The Proposal was Sandra back at doing what she is known for. And she did a great job. I’m not at all surprised she scored a nom for it.
They’re clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel to fill out this category, probably thinking “OMG. We have to come up with five!”
I thought that movie was garbage.
such a sad year for actresses when Sandra Bullock gets nominated
Why? Because someone people actually like is nominated as opposed to some actress that nobody cares about? Don’t be so snobby.
Wow, What’s so bad about Sandra Bullock?
Did you even see these films- both were entertaining
I don’t think that Paige is being snobby. She’s just pointing out the difference between popular and good.
I was super happy for her. But where the heII is Ponyo?!
Ponyo was from 2008
Those are some good animated movie nominations. What a great year for animation
WHY THE HELL WAS PONYO NOT NOMINATED FOR BEST ANIMATED PICTURE!?!?!?!? CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS?????????
so right. but what can you expect from them really??
Up has to win. That was one of Pixar’s if not THE most dramatic movie they’ve made. 10 mins. in my entire theater was crying.
I agree. Why wasn’t PONYO nominated for Best Animated Film?
If you guys would have read the other comments you would have seen that somebody already addressed why Ponyo wasn’t nominated. It was released in 2008, just not in the U.S. until this year. That makes in ineligible.
Nothing hugely surprising. Great to see Bullock as a double nominee.
I know, that made me smile
yay for Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria! and LOL to Timberlake for telling John Krasinski he’s going to get lucky tonight
JT was such a prick, WTH was he doing there besides being an attention whore. God i hate him
OMG… ME AND YOU RON SEEM TO BE THE ONLY TWO! But YAY for Emily Blunt… I’ve been dying to see this movie and glad its finally hitting NYC theaters
loving the love for Basterds but where is Mélanie Laurent?
Indeed!!! She was so fantastic!
SERIOUSLY. And Diane Kruger? That film had superior female actors!
You’re calling Kruger a superior actress? Wow. What an insult to truly superior actors.
Wasn’t the movie marketed as a comedy more than a drama though?
I can see your point. It does have some wit and dark humor to it, but I’d call it a drama in the end.
That’s what people were saying about Up in the Air too. It’s more of a comedy than drama.
Even more surprising, Orville: wasn’t “Up in the Air” also marketed as a comedy?
Hum… I don’t think Melanie Laurent was that good. It’s probably due to the movie but the way she spoke French (and I know, I’m French) was just not WW2 material – it was a lot too modern, so not really believable (like hearing a XXIst century average Parisian girl talk).
Melanie Laurent and Abbie Cornish over Emily Blunt, anyday of the year!hands down should have been recolonized for their great depth
WRONG. massive fail George
Best score is the only nom for Where the Wild Things Are? Criminal.
WTWTA was an overrated mess. Thank GOD it was mostly ignored…
Luddite, I’m with you, I thought it was a beautiful movie. Makes me sick to see “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” up there in the animated category and no sign of Where the Wild Things Are anywhere other than best score. No love for Spike Jonze.
Ya, and Ponyo’s not nominated for ANYTHING. I’m very upset about that. Ponyo was one of the best movies of 2009. <3
Where are Jeremy Renner (THE HURT LOCKER) and Soairse Ronan (THE LOVELY BONES)?
Jeremy Renner should have been included.
I think the shun at the GG can only help Jeremy Renner get a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars. I still think that Colin Firth is going to be the one shunned come Oscar nomination day.
!joseph gordon-levitt!
yay!!!
Finally someone see his talent!!
he’s hot and a good dancer and all that but that movie was so sweet i got a toothache, and the ending was horrible
But no Zooey. It makes me a bit sad inside.
Gawd, such embarrassing nominees…
the musical/comedy choices are especially wretched (haven’t seen It’s Complicated or Nine yet, mind you, but i’m not expecting much from either)…where’s A Serious Man or In the Loop?!
Yeah, it’s mostly a popularity contest, the best movies rarely win or get nominated but I’ll be watching to see if ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and ‘True Blood’ walk away with anything.
That’s what the oscars are for.. sometimes. Everyone will never agree on what movie is a “good movie” so of course it’s a popularity vote. If the majority of the voters think a movie is good, then the majority wins.
That’s how these things work… I thought everyone understood that?
The comedy/musical picture category is a freakin’ joke. 3 of the 5 choices don’t have a snowball of a chance in hell at getting a Best Picture nomination from the Academy, even with 10 nominees.
I saw both IN THE LOOP and A SERIOUS MAN and I have to say, they were the dullest films I have seen all year. I can see why they weren’t nominated for best picture. The HFPC got that right.
January Jones should be immediately disqualified for her SNL performance.
I was going to say something along those lines…HA HA!! Christina Hendricks should take her spot!
That was a good funny comment but then you would have to point out Joseph Gordan Levitt also did SNL and he wasnt too funny overall either. Though a lot better than January Jones.
YAY JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT!!!
I KNOW! Finally the guy is getting some much deserved recognition. I wish he would win though.
I’m stoked that both (500) Days of Summer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were both nominated. It was a gutsy film they made and it deserves all the recognition that it gets.
The song nominated for “Avatar” is actually called “I See You”, not “I Will See You”. I’m predicting “Nine” and “Up In The Air” as the Best Picture Winners.
Congrats to Toby. Saw Brothers on Sunday and he was AMAZING. Also to the Precious noms(most heartbreaking/disturbing movie I have seen in years). Boo to The Hangover..completely over-rated. I did not laugh once, in fact couldn’t even sit through it.
Yeah, he was my biggest surprise in this list since no one ever mentioned his name in the other awards. He is really the best in that movie and you are connected to him! You forgot that he is the Spiderman!
I hope not–”Up in the air” is a major snooze fest
HOW COULD TOBEY MAGUIRE GET A NOM FOR BROTHERS??? THAT SLOT HAD SHARLTO COPLEY’S NAME ALL OVER IT!!! That makes me sad. To say that his performance in District 9 was a breakthrough is an understatement and was FAAAAR more impressive than Maguire’s 10 minute bust-up at the end of Brothers.
I was thinking it was Renner’s spot, but I also agree Sharlto Copley!
