For me, the morning’s happiest surprise was Maguire’s inclusion for the completely underrated Brothers. I would’ve like to have seen The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner in there as well, but he was overcome by star power.

Blunt’s totally convincing portrayal of The Young Victoria should make her a stronger contender for an Oscar nod as more people see the film. I fear Bright Star‘s Abbie Cornish is all but gone from the race now.

He was truly amazing! That man created pure evil on the screen. He is by far the best deserving. Especially since this was his first American film.
Waltz was AWESOME in Inglorious. IF he doesn’t win there is something wrong in the universe.

WOw, they really want to honor Sandra for the hit that she makes this year.. But i do think Sandra was great in The Blind Side but not really awards worth in The Proposal.
The Proposal was Sandra back at doing what she is known for. And she did a great job. I’m not at all surprised she scored a nom for it.
They’re clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel to fill out this category, probably thinking “OMG. We have to come up with five!”

Up has to win. That was one of Pixar’s if not THE most dramatic movie they’ve made. 10 mins. in my entire theater was crying.

If you guys would have read the other comments you would have seen that somebody already addressed why Ponyo wasn’t nominated. It was released in 2008, just not in the U.S. until this year. That makes in ineligible.

Hum… I don’t think Melanie Laurent was that good. It’s probably due to the movie but the way she spoke French (and I know, I’m French) was just not WW2 material – it was a lot too modern, so not really believable (like hearing a XXIst century average Parisian girl talk).

Luddite, I’m with you, I thought it was a beautiful movie. Makes me sick to see “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” up there in the animated category and no sign of Where the Wild Things Are anywhere other than best score. No love for Spike Jonze.

the musical/comedy choices are especially wretched (haven’t seen It’s Complicated or Nine yet, mind you, but i’m not expecting much from either)…where’s A Serious Man or In the Loop?!
Yeah, it’s mostly a popularity contest, the best movies rarely win or get nominated but I’ll be watching to see if ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and ‘True Blood’ walk away with anything.
That’s what the oscars are for.. sometimes. Everyone will never agree on what movie is a “good movie” so of course it’s a popularity vote. If the majority of the voters think a movie is good, then the majority wins.
That’s how these things work… I thought everyone understood that?
The comedy/musical picture category is a freakin’ joke. 3 of the 5 choices don’t have a snowball of a chance in hell at getting a Best Picture nomination from the Academy, even with 10 nominees.
I saw both IN THE LOOP and A SERIOUS MAN and I have to say, they were the dullest films I have seen all year. I can see why they weren’t nominated for best picture. The HFPC got that right.

I’m stoked that both (500) Days of Summer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were both nominated. It was a gutsy film they made and it deserves all the recognition that it gets.
The song nominated for “Avatar” is actually called “I See You”, not “I Will See You”. I’m predicting “Nine” and “Up In The Air” as the Best Picture Winners.
Congrats to Toby. Saw Brothers on Sunday and he was AMAZING. Also to the Precious noms(most heartbreaking/disturbing movie I have seen in years). Boo to The Hangover..completely over-rated. I did not laugh once, in fact couldn’t even sit through it.
Yeah, he was my biggest surprise in this list since no one ever mentioned his name in the other awards. He is really the best in that movie and you are connected to him! You forgot that he is the Spiderman!

HOW COULD TOBEY MAGUIRE GET A NOM FOR BROTHERS??? THAT SLOT HAD SHARLTO COPLEY’S NAME ALL OVER IT!!! That makes me sad. To say that his performance in District 9 was a breakthrough is an understatement and was FAAAAR more impressive than Maguire’s 10 minute bust-up at the end of Brothers.
I was thinking it was Renner’s spot, but I also agree Sharlto Copley!
