there are going to be some changes at Fox if this movie doesn’t deliver some serious box office.

I agree John, heads will roll if somehow the 387 million estimated to make the film and market it isn’t recouped. With that being said I’d be shocked if it didn’t. I haven’t seen Twilight or New Moon so I won’t dis but it’s kind of shocking to see a movie with such an outstanding first week gross limp to the finish line and possibly peter out before it makes 300 million domestic.

I’m not a Twilight fan by any stretch of the imagination but considering the comparatively small budget of NM I’d hardly say that it’s expected final domestic gross can be considered a disappointment.

New Moon’s sheer amount of income is impressive, yes, but I’m sure the bigwigs are slightly concerned that with such a huge opening, it still couldn’t muster $300 million total. 70% drops are nothing to be excited or happy about.
And the “comparatively small budget” of New Moon is laughable. If a good movie is made for next to nothing, looks great and makes a lot of profit, great. More power to it. But when studios like Summit make crap movies on the cheap because they know people will see them no matter how cheap and cheesy they look, I can only roll my eyes in disdain. It wouldn’t have killed Summit to spend money to actually make the film look good, and I’m tired of seeing their miserly, cheapskate, greedy actions hailed as being “cost-efficient.” Call them what they are — CHEAP.

Hannah, did you see New Moon?

      • @Ambient Lite

I saw New Moon, and I agree with every single thing Hannah said.

      • Dee

Saw it too, and I agree with Hannah as well. You’ll have to use your “But you haven’t even seen it! How do you know it sucked?!” argument on someone else. lol

I’m not paying to see a movie where once again humans come off as being the bad guys. And plus, James Cameron is a cheater, he cheated on his wife while making Titanic. I’m not going to support a man who makes a movie depicting us as the bad guys and who himself is a bad guy for cheating.

    Fail.

    • @John

John, aren’t humans usually the bad guys? I’m pretty sure that when it comes to resource exploitation, deforestation, species eradication and all that jazz, we’re usually the culprits. And I’m human and I can admit it!

“I also think part of the anticipation is due to the fact that Cameron is presenting an original piece of storytelling that’s not based on a TV show, book or previous movie.”
I have not seen the movie but from the plot synopsis that I have read this sounds like many many movies before it, guy told to hate someone else, guy spends time with that someone else and then joins their side to fight the people he first believed in, I don’t know that just doesn’t sound that original to me! Yes it is not based off a TV show, etc. but I am guessing if this does well they will be wanting to make sequels, prequels, t.v. shows and such and that is a sell-out. Hopefully this makes sense I hate people you post stuff and sounding so stupid.

I just saw Avatar! It’s a masterpiece. It is the best film i’ve seen in years. New Moon has no match for it. I’ll definitely see it again.

  • Breann

Avatar was a kick ass movie, Loved it! See it in 3D bc it is soo worth it…. great movie, have not seen a good movie like this in a long while…

  • Hannah

I saw it earlier today. 11 a.m. IMAX 3D showing ($15 tickets, kids) and it was SOLD out and filled with a lot of families, older people (40+), couples, women, etc. Not exactly your stereotypical geek contingent.
    Sorry, Ambient. :-)

    • Dee

Yup, I’m seeing it, and I’m not a sci-fi fan. It’s getting really good reviews, nominations for major awards, and I’m interested to see what James Cameron did this time.

    • Javs

I just saw the movie (excellent even though the plot is tried) and was surprised by how many elderly couples were there O.o I’m not a sci-fi guru myself, but I really wasn’t expecting the over 60 crowd to be curious or excited about Avatar.

  • Salil

DAMN!!! I am in India and I cant see it for another week! I have to wait till Monday to get tickets for Thursday!

I´ve seen the movie in 2D and it´s great, but this same movie in 3D is simply an allucinating experience, quite different to any other thing you have ever seen.
And the best, it´s a whole new story, not a sequel, comic, book or tv show adaptation … A whole new creation comes out from the mind of this filmmaking genius James Cameron.
