I think the definitive move of this decade is The Dark Knight.
As an expat, I can attest that the British have a very unique taste in film. Take their list with a grain of salt.
A) This list lost credibility with the first entry. You can’t put a movie on a decade-ending list that hasn’t even come out yet (at the time of this list, there hadn’t been more than a short preview screening). B) Michael Moore is a hack, and hasn’t made anything worthwhile since “Roger and Me,” so for one of his films to be the “defining” movie of the decade is ridiculous. C) The correct answer to the movie of the decade question is “Pan’s Labyrinth” is we’re talking best, and either TDK or LoTR if we’re talking most important.
If Milk isn’t on this list, I think I’m going to go Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the BBritish. This film may not have defined the decade, but it stands fo humanity and is especially relevant today.
I hate gross out movies, so, while I accept the fact that, for example, “There’s Something About Mary” may be good of its kind, it’s not my thing. Similarly, I think people who slam the LOTR have to acknowledge that it just isn’t their thing. Because, of its kind, it is unquestionably, indisputably, without doubt, awesome. There just shouldn’t be any debate about it, IMHO.
(Sun Dec. 20 7:00 AM) The list is relatively versatile in terms of countries of origin. But, IMO, many/some of them are “not” that defining. Many films released in US in 1999 (the American Beauty & Insider year) would beat them on any given day. That being said, this British list is, methinks, interesting still — also showcasing another unique taste. By the way, thanks for sharing, Lisa.
Slumdog Millionaire undoubtedly no. 1 – and that’s for ALL time folks.
LOTR, Cars, The Hangover, Walk The Line also very valid for this century of movies!
i think EW’s criteria for picking it’s top 100 will be trying to pick the “classic” films that will be remembered on TCM in 2050. the brits seem to look more at the most consequential films of the 00′s, or at least those films which only could have been made in the climate of this decade. while i usually agree with EW’s rankings, i appreciate the different take.
Gladiator was excellent even tho I’m not a Russell Crowe fan. There were a lot of good movies made during this decade.
