On Wednesday night we at Entertainment Weekly kicked off a new series for our parent company, Time Inc., called “Live & Unfiltered,” in which each magazine invites a notable name from the world it covers for a conversation in front of a select audience. We chose reigning Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Penélope Cruz, who, having earned Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for her performance as Daniel Day-Lewis’ endearingly needy mistress, Carla, in Nine, seems well on her way to scoring a second consecutive Oscar nod in the category. With the film opening in theaters today, here’s Part 1 of our interview, where Cruz talks about how the Pink Panther, of all characters, inspired her sexy dance moves. I’ll post the rest early next week.
I adore Penelope Cruz. I doubt she’ll win the Oscar this year, with really stiff competition from frontrunner Mo’Nique, and to a lesser extent, Anna Kendrick, who is gaining some momentum. But I still hope Cruz can at least get a nomination. And she also has a lead role in Broken Embraces too. So she could possibly be a double nominee. But the chances of getting a nod for Broken Embraces are not much. I wouldn’t put money on that one.
I think Marion Cotillard will be nominated instead.
and i don’t think 2 ladies from Nine will be nominated. one or the other and I think Cotillard has the edge. either way, Monique is winning, regardless of who’s nominated alongside her.
Marion’s been positioned as lead for the race so far. They’ll have to do some work to convince people to switch her category.

M’onique is getting the Oscar. Her performance in PRECIOUS is astonishing..I would’ve never guessed the sassy, abrasive comedienne from THE PARKERS would have it in her to transform herself so brilliantly into a character so horrifying and so complex.

Penelope Cruz cannot act in two languages. I think when you’re willing to get naked all the time in a movie and do lay and play, like she probably did. Then, you keep getting nominated for all these awards undeservedly.

She actually can act in 4 languages, and has done it well. She won the Italian equivalent of the Oscar for an Italian-language film she did a few years back.
How many languages can you act in?
She might get a nod in supporting, doubt she’d win twice in a row, though. But you never know with Oscar voters, might depend on how Nine does at the box office. Still, fantastic actress.
It’s astonishing how heavy her accent still is.
Obviously you don’t understand anything about languages and accents. Try to speak her language with no accent! Or any other language. Penelope is more well-spoken than many Americans. At least she doesn’t use the word “stuff” for every noun and “get” for every verb. By the way, try to learn why people have accents and why they won’t go away. It’ll do you good.
who cares? she is amazing, without her accent none of her characters would be so interesting.
Why? She’s Spanish, she lives in Spain. Why should her accent change?
Here Here! I love her voice and she comes off very well read. She was very intelligent of Charlie Rose.
I actually really love her voice. Her heavily Spanish inflected English is far more articulate than the English of many American actresses.

I don’t really get her appeal. I don’t think that she’s just that good of actress and how body leaves much to be desired.
I bet Penelope Cruz’s back has seen more casting couches than IKEA furniture has seen butts in theirs. It’s no way anybody can think that she’s all that good of an actress. In her English language movies, I can barely understand her. Plus, she’s like in a movie every month whether it be US or foreign movie. She is too overexposed.
Most overrated actress in Hollywood. I don’t see how she gets nominated every year for all the major awards. I don’t think she’s even that good looking. She’s pretty mousy looking.
I mean, she’s fine, but Anna Kendrick really was spectacular.
