'Avatar': Does its so-so story matter? It depends on your definition of matter

I have to disagree with your comment about the so-so story line. To me it spoke about how we as American’s are many times going where ever we please and making many assumptions along the way(not caring or checking to see if we are actually right or wrong). Does anyone else see any similarities between the Earth forces going to take the minerals on Pandora and the US’ invovlement in the Middle East conflicts? Just because we are bigger and stronger does not make us right.

Im tired of fighting all the unimaginative, cynical, cold, ignorant losers that actually think Avatar is a crappy movie. Everyone i know that hated it was a simple-minded trashy and a closed minded a-hole. YES the story isnt very complex and unique, but it works perfectly for this movie. Whats important is the world of pandora and the message it brings. We unknowingly become Jake and learn to understand and judge the world and the Na’vi as respectable and important. We see through Jake that this new world is more than a treasure hunt. Treating the world equally to yourself and not abusing everything for your own gain is something that nobody can comprehend anymore. America and countries with similar luxuries never realize what has been done to nature in order for us to have the privilege of owning technology. We live so comfortably that we dont put up with the truth of what has been sacrificed for our convenience. For once I think about why nobody just removes the forests that surround by block in place of a lawn and a parking lot. I used to favor my xbox over a hike, if that makes more sense. If you can point out the story while watching avatar, then you should be able to figure out its humane message. I say we agree the story isnt outstanding and just move on to the deeper meaning of choice, understanding, justice, self-entitlement, greed, love, and life.

I agree wholeheartedly. Sad that such a cutsy sci-fi version of Pochahontas is nominated for Best picture. Best fx or cinematography, maybe.
Sci-fi to sci-fi, in my opinion, District 9 wins hands down without the 3D gimmick which is all Avatar has to brag about.

I’m late to the party, I know, but I think it’s important to point out that this review and every single comment here amount to OPINION. Nothing more. I’ve only read about half of the comments, but I’d wager to say there’s nary a screenwriter in the bunch. Please understand: Dialogue does not equal a screenplay. Story and script are two different things.

I landed on this review because I’ve been trying to find someone who can give concrete examples of why the story is so boring, aside from the usual “it’s been done before” rant.

If the story and characters don’t resonate with you personally, that’s perfectly normal but it doesn’t mean that one person is Right and another is Wrong. Demanding that a film must fit certain criteria in order to be considered “good” is infantile. You only make yourself out to be that much more a yokel, a cretin, by hammering out your opinion as if it is infallible truth and castigating anyone whose opinion differs.

I say this: Make up a story for a feature film. Write a script. Learn what it really takes to create something so complex before you casually bash an artist’s work. Avatar is only Avatar. It’s not Bergman, Coppola, Rohmer, Abrams, Lucas or anything other than Cameron. You like great dialogue? Check out a Woody Allen flick. Want some amazing, deep characters? Check out Malle or Truffaut.

Avatar backlash is bollocks. NO story is ever completely original, although I can’t remember seeing another movie in which a soldier makes a remote neural connection with an alien body grown for that very purpose, then while in that body he learns how to make physical neural connections with animals to control them while riding them.

A story is about so much more than whether the dialogue crackles or the plot is similar to that of other films. I’m just tired of hearing people opine negatively about Avatar for the sake of seeming wise or cool or alternative or whatever brand of superior you think anyone else will buy from you. Think, really think, or at least try to, before vomiting maladroit garbage all over the Intarwebs. Try it, it could be rewarding!
