Penelope Cruz on 'Nine' and her Oscar win

Here’s the rest of my OscarWatch interview with Penelope Cruz, in which we discuss her experience shooting Nine, her memories of her Oscar win for Vicky Cristina Barcelona earlier this year, and why she used to tear her toenails off as a teenager (disgusting but true). In Part 3 we talk about one of her scenes in Nine where Daniel Day-Lewis applies makeup on her face; hear how the two-time Oscar winner surprised Cruz with his handiwork.

Cruz may be a good actress; but I don’t think the American public has ever embraced her.

What are you typing about? She’s been nominated twice for an Oscar and took one home once…

    • Chappel

In my defense I offer that she runs a lot faster than me.

      • Martin Marprelate

I was able to get a hold of her once.

I think she’s a wonderful actress when she’s speaking her native tongue. I just don’t think she’s been able to translate that talent into her English speaking roles. If I’m not mistaken, she’s only been nominated for Spanish speaking roles (I include her Oscar win in this category).

But I think that’s partially because she hasn’t been in any truly great American movies. I mean, compare something like Volver (as a movie, outside her performance) to Vanilla Sky. She was great in Elegy, in a mostly English speaking role, and lo and behold, that is a good movie. I think it speaks to the quality of the role more than her performance. And I head she’s the best thing about Nine.

She won for best supporting actress for Vicki Christina Barcelona… she spoke English & Spanish- mostly English, in that movie. She lost the year she was nominated for “Volver” which was a completely Spanish film and which I thought was a million times stronger role for her.

for some reason, penelope cruz annoys the crap out of me. maybe it’s because she’s such an american- wannabe

    ilike

She annoys me, too. Everytime I turn around she’s either in an American movie or Spanish-language movie. She seriously has a movie that comes out every 2 months because of this. I’ve seen most of the American movies because they normally star other people I like. I don’t find her that good of an actress. Yet she gets nominated for a ton of awards every award season. I guess it’s because of all the Hollywood boyfriends she has had and connections made. Dating Tom Cruise was a big lauching pad for her, just like it was with Nicole Kidman. But Nicole is actually pretty good in some of her movies.

  • Danny

Yep, she dated Matthew McConahey and now Javier Bardiem. She is very overexposed.

  • Cindy

I don’t understand the hype over her, and it seems to be only a Hollywood thing why she gets nominated over and over. You would think that she’s as good an actress as Meryl Streep.

  • Cindy

Just to add, I think she’s pretty one dimensional.

  • Cindy

Last comment, I just noticed Penelope’s legs are spread wide open in the freeze frame, probably explains her appeal in Hollywood, lol.

  • Harold

Bad actress and average looking, Penelope Cruz does absolutedly nothing for me.

  • Bob Loblaw

When has ew.com become worse than the Ain’t It Cool News Talkback? Hints of prejudice, ignorance, and even jingoism (she’s an american-wannabe?) plague these comment sections. Cruz is terrific, and if you’re not convinced then watch her Almodovar films.

  • RafaelNYC

I agree with Bob Loblaw, most of these people seem to have a problem with the fact she’s Spanish. I wonder if these people realize that Ms. Cruz doesn’t give a damn what they think. For every actor they do an article on there will always be haters among the comments.

  • Ashley

Wow, I wasn’t going to comment but it appears Penelope needs some love. She’s absolutely gorgeous and a wonderful actress and she gives the second best performance in Nine (behind Marion Cotillard). Also, Dave totally wants her.

  • HiVoltageBlond

She’s worked her ass off to get where she is, she’s a great actress – authentic, sensual without being vulgar, and that’s a European thing – I agree many Americans just don’t know how to appreciate her. Beautiful inside and out.

  • expat

Pé as they call her here in Spain isn’t regarded as a great actress by many Spaniards here either. She looks like a chicken and can only act as a crazy, sexy Spanish girl. There are better Spanish actors here in Spain and abroad. They just don’t date around to get noticed. She’s quite arrogant when she comes back to Spain so not many people like her here. She’s only somewhat appealing in the USA because she’s an exotic foreign actress. She’s horrible in English-speaking films and mediocre in Spanish ones. All she did in ‘Volver’ was act bitchy and cry, and her character does not have cancer or kill anyone in that movie. She’s totally overrated.
