What happened to the 'minority' directors?

Last month, my friend, Variety editor Tim Gray, wrote a preview of this year’s Oscar season where he took note of all the strong contenders Read the full post.

Karger: Was this article really necessary? Did you really have to open up the hate flood gates? Too bad so many cowards use internet postings to rant and rave hate when they don’t have the balls to do so face to face. This is supposed to be a blog on movie awards, not a sounding board for sexist, racist homophobic ranters.

Um… surprised no one else has pointed out to Orac that Mo’nique isn’t a rapper, she’s been an actress/comic/TV personality (“Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School,” anyone?) her entire career. I haven’t seen “Precious” but I think the point has been made before that for an actress with a comedy background, her terrifying performance as Precious’s mom was surprising.

I have to admit, I’ve been surprised to see any award nominations for “Nine,” because I haven’t read any good reviews for it. “Invictus”: well, when you have Clint Eastwood (Oscar winner) directing Morgan Freeman (Oscar winner) and Matt Damon (Oscar winner) in a movie about Nelson Mandela (biopic – Oscar bait) and the end of apartheid (social issue – Oscar bait), they could have shown up and spoken pig Latin throughout the movie and it still would have been nominated.

      hahaha
allison you are on the money re: invictus. what floored me was how ugly it was photographed…did they hire a local news camera operator? eastwood’s “changeling’ was beautifully shot. was this so as to not bring attention to anything but the predictable story…? granted, it is based on events but it could have been pretty, too.

    @Beverely

There are no white directors that consistently make bad movies. Hello, have you ever freaking heard of Michael Bay.

Hey Tex, its spelled with an ‘F’, you douchebag. . . And to stay on topic I think the article is being hopeful about there being a diversity in the nominations. Looking at the hopefuls, they’re all very deserving. I don’t think the article is villifying anyone. I think Rob Marshall not being nominated makes sense since ‘Nine’ has been getting mixed reviews. I loved what he did in ‘Chicago’, but he dropped the ball on ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’. I’m a little confused and disappointed that Lee Daniels is getting ignored. A majority of the reviews I read were always complimenting his direction. It’s also easy to get lost in the shuffle with such big names doing great work. Tarantino, Cameron, and Eastwood.

And as far as women directors, they make amazing debuts. Kimberly Pierce- boys don’t cry, karyn kusama-girlfight, niki caro- whale rider and north country, catherince hardwicke- thirteen, patty jenkins-monster. However, some of their follow ups were awful! Karyn kusama-aeon flux, catherine hardwicke-twilight ( loved the movie but not oscar worthy). Jane campion and nancy meyers are the only women directors that keep coming back with films that are worth talking about. I’ve only heard of katherine bigelow this year. ‘The hurt locker’ is on my gotta go see list.

ok.if the minority writer, director or actor is worthy enough they will be nominated. looks like precious will get a few oscar noms. i dont think for the director though. not over james cameron, clint eastwood, jason reitman, kathryn bigelow or quentin tarantino.

  • Ronnie Deshe

Reasons why most acknowledged directors are straight, white, and male:

    1. There are much more white people than any other ethnicity in the U.S.
    2. There are many more Male directors than female directors
    3

  • Ronnie Deshe

Oh nevermind, no three… that’s it.

as a gay lad who has seen all the films mentioned in this piece, i would choose the following as the top 5 directorial achievements of 2009:
    quentin tarantino, “inglourious basterds”
    kathryn bigelow, “the hurt locker”
    lone scherfig, “an education”
    pedro almodovar, “broken embraces”
    joel coen, “a serious man”

    other really good movies:
“up” [not even mentioned], “precious”, “avatar”, “a single man”, “[500] days of summer”, “julie & julia” (well just the ‘julia’ section, the ‘julie’ was lame), “bright star”, “the messenger”

    way over-rated:
“up in the air”, “invictus”, “it’s complicated”,

not even very good: “nine” (only fergie and kate hudson’s numbers were good, and the acting of cotillard and cruz was nice)

    • tyler

      so basically it’s 2 females- 1 foreign, a gay foreigner, a jewish intellectual weirdo, and a str8 fanboy turned director weirdo- a gr8 mix…

  • GG

I don’t think Avatar is going to take the Oscars the way Titanic did, if it does, I’ll be so disappointed. What a boring award season is is already? Anyway, I know Tom Ford probably won’t get a not for Best Director, but I agree with the writer here who says, most likely ‘best adapted script’…and as for films, I’m still holding out judgement until I see them all.
