Sean Bailey has never been a studio executive and he’s spent the bulk of his producing career as Ben Affleck’s partner but as of yesterday he’s the new president of production at Disney Studios. The move comes only four days after longtime Disney employee Oren Aviv was booted from the company for which he had served for the past 20 years.
The move is somewhat surprising only in that Disney’s chief Rich Ross lacks movie experience and one would think he’d want someone with some experience inside a movie studio behind him as he navigates the unruly waters of production.
Bailey has had a production deal at the studio for a few years and is directly behind Disney’s big Christmas movie Tron: The Legacy. But for the majority of his career he’s been tied to Affleck. He produced the actor’s directorial debut Gone Baby Gone and was previously partners with Affleck and Matt Damon with their Live Planet company that made Project Greenlight.
As we’ve seen in Ross’s short tenure, he has no interest in playing it safe. The former Disney Channel head fired his two marketing heads back in December and still hasn’t replaced them, even though he has a movie opening in two weeks: When in Rome. Ross is said to be interested in bringing someone from outside Hollywood to run marketing. Who he chooses will be yet another interesting development in what is becoming a complete overhaul of Disney Studios.
