Robert Pattinson and Sean Penn are in negotiations to star with Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants for Fox 2000. The film will be an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s 2006 bestseller of the same name about a love triangle among circus employees in Depression-era America. Pattinson would play Jacob Jankowski, an orphaned veterinary student who is put in charge of caring for the animals in a traveling circus. He falls in love with beautiful equestrian rider Marlena (Witherspoon) who is married to the troupe’s charismatic but dangerous animal trainer August (Penn).
Francis Lawrence attached to direct, and Richard LaGravenese to adapt the script. Gil Netter, Erwin Stoff and Andrew Tennenbaum are producing. Fox hasn’t confirmed Pattinson and Penn’s involvement in the project.
Sounds like a great project and a wonderful cast.
Replace Pattinson with someone that can act and I’ll see this.

Robert can act and I cannot wait for everyone to see that. I don’t think these producers would put him in such a huge film if they did not see his potential.
RPattz can act. He’s definitely going to be a great actor some day. It’s just jealousy why you and others can’t see it.
Don’t be an azz. Rob Pattinson is an excellent actor and is mesmerizing on the screen. He would be perfect in this role. In fact, I can’t think of anyone of his age group that would be a better Jacob.
Me too. I think they’re overestimating his star power. I don’t care what they put him in, I won’t see it because he can’t act. Maybe he will prove me wrong.

Rob did a wonderful job in the first two twilight movies and i cant wait to see the 3rd one. Rob teaming up with Reese, i dont think it can get better than that. Two very TALENTED stars!!!

This is one of my favorite books, EVER! I’m so excited that it’s being adapted for the screen.
I did not think this book was great. But if Rob is in it…
i loveeeee the book and thought it was awesome. I’ll admit that I have never seen any of Rob Pattinson’s movie so I can’t judge his acting skills but I hope he does the movie and book justice.
Oh no. I hope not. That is my favorite book and a moody vampire can not play the title character. I don’t like the director choice either, a music video director is not suitable for this excellent novel.
The last time I checked Rob is not a moody vampire, he plays one in a movie.
Give him a break and give him a chance to prove himself.

He’s such a good actor that he’s convinced you that he really is a Vampire. He plays a moody vampire in a really poorly written movie series. I’ve seen some of his other movies and he can act. I recommend How To Be. He plays a perfectly charming, very nerdy musician. He’s funny,charming, and great in this. Give him a good script and he will run with it.
In the book Jacob is a red-head,so they are obviously changing that considering Robert Pattinson is not a red head… I’m not too crazy about Robert Pattinson but I won’t pass judgement just yet considering he is starting to come out with some different movies than twilight. I like the idea of Reese Witherspoon I love her and her acting will fit that role perfectly. In the book I could be wrong but I always thought that August was a tall burly/bulky man and Sean Penn just doesn’t fit that description for me, he will probably play August as a shorter stature squirley man but who knows it could work.
Like another commenter pointed out earlier I just hope they do the book justice, too many times Hollywood ruins amazing novels.
If Robert gets the part, now that he’ll actually have a good screenplay to work with, I hope that his acting improves.
I’ve seen a few of his previous films (The Bad Mother’s Handbook, How to Be, etc…) and I think he has potential.
I hope he’s able to give a good performance.
I for one believe in giving actors more than one chance. Johnny Depp wasn’t taken seriously when he first tried to take on difficult roles. At first, people only saw him as the heartthrob from 21 Jump Street. However, things are clearly different now.
Whether or not Robert Pattinson ends up with a respectable career is up to him, but I certainly think that it’s too soon to judge.
Anyways, this sounds like a fantastic project and I hope it turns out well.
I realize people don’t like Robert because of Twilight. But all I ask is that people give him a chance. The man has great potential. I thought that he was amazing in New Moon, if you understand Edward’s character.
I thought he was refreshing in How To Be.
I think this is a wonderful opportunity for him to prove himself, and I seriously doubt that producers would take a risk on someone to be in this kind of film with these actors if they did not see potential in him.

Reese Witherspoon is a critically acclaimed actress who has LEAD several successful films and is well respected. She is not the weak link in this three-some. The ex-model/ex-sparkling vampire/magazine cover boy is who you should be worried about. Reese can out-class and out-act him any day. They will realize their mistake and replace him before filming starts.
This was a great book, I don’t want to see it spoiled by some no-acting pretty boy.
Directors and producers of this callaber don’t hire people unless they feel they can do the job. Obviously, they think he can and they know more than you or I do.
I also meant to say that films are too expensive to make and too much money is at stake for them to hire someone they doubt can handle it.
I put my money on Rob Pattinson as will the studio if they hire him. He will be fantastic in this role if he can fit it in around the other movies he is considering doing or already committed to doing. This is an extremely strong cast. Reese and Rob were really good together in the deleted scenes from Vanity Fair that have surfaced. I would love to see them on screen again together.
