Looks like its gonna be a rough weekend for new releases. Early estimates for Friday show Avatar back on top yet again, adding another $9 million to its cumulative haul. Legion, from Sony’s Screen Gems division, performed best of the new releases, with the sci-fi thriller starring Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid scoring an estimated $6.7 million for the day. Third place belonged to holdover The Book of Eli, which grossed close to $5 million in its second Friday in theaters. And it doesn’t look like kids are buying The Rock as The Tooth Fairy. The PG-rated comedy starring Dwayne Johnson earned only $3.4 million on its opening day for a fourth place slot. Number five belonged to The Lovely Bones, which garnered an additional $2.6 million for the day.
Meanwhile, CBS Films looks like its going to be asking for a do-over on their debut film from the new company. Extraordinary Measures, with Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, landed in the sixth slot with only $2 million for the day. Check back tomorrow for a full weekend report.

What more can be said.. THIS MOVIE IS JUST KILLING IT!!!
Hahaha those poor little movies. No matter how hard they try, they’re just no match for Avatar!
What is wrong with me? Am i the only one who doesn’t think Avatar is that great ?
Yes, yes you are. Avatar is an extraoridnary moviegoing experience, that is worth every penny, and that deserves all its success.
It’s great, but definitely not “Best Picture” great.
“the Hurt Locker” or “Avatar” will win.
I definitely think its a Best Picture caliber film. Rarely am I as moved by a film as I was with Avatar. I think the thing that separates the viewing experiences for people is the fact that some people can just go with the imaginative aspects of the film. I think you have to have an imagination to fully appreciate the film as it is. Some people just don’t have that.
I think you can have an imagination and not think Avatar was that great. Visually, it’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. But I simply can’t get past the bad writing and uneven acting to consider it the BEST THING EVER MADE.
for an animated movie, it’s okay.
Yup!
No your not. Im sick of Avatar and all the brainwashed people out there who think its the greatest thing sense sliced bread.
well for lots it is. but the hurt locker is the best, then there is Avatar
I’m not sensing any sliced bread, but I’m sensing Thunderfart sliced the cheese.
No I am sure you are not the only one. Everyone has their opinions. But word of mouth and the fact that it won a bunch of GG’s is making it unstoppable right now.
Nope icon, you’re not. The 3D was great, the movie itself was just so so. I recommended it to my friends, but only if they saw it in 3D, without that, it wouldn’t even be worth a new release DVD rental.
l first saw this in my town in 2D as 3D wasn’t an option here. We loved the MOVIE so much, that we had to take a ferry in to experience it in 3D. The effect was amazing, but a little was lost in the detail as some of the ‘perspective’ is forced on you (like things in the foreground being blurred). l (and l’m sure a lot of others) am all over this when it comes out on Blu-ray as l loved the story and characters both!
Yes, you are.
You’re not the only one. It was too long for no good reason. The main character’s accent kept changing throughout. And the story, in general, wasn’t all the strong. It was pretty to look at, though.
No. You aren’t. The story is Pocahontas but in space. The only reason it’s doing so well is because it’ a James Cameron movie.
You’re not the only one. The effects were cool, but the plot was unoriginal and the dialogue was stiff and at times incredibly corny. I was bored most of the movie.
No, in fact I agree with you completely. The story is so simplistic and formulaic, guy has to invade group of people…connects with people…other bad guy wants to destroy blue people…good guy sympathizes with blue people and helps them. It should win every technical award in the world, but it is NOT “Best Picture” good. I love James Cameron, but his story was simplistic and way too formulaic for this movie to get as much praise as it is, in fact if it weren’t 3-D it probably wouldn’t be.
I agree. I thought it mediocre at best with a poorly written script. No substance to speak of.
Told ya Legion was gonna do better than Tooth Fairy.
do you smell what crispy is cookin’?
Do you want a medal?
If a director commits 4 years of his life….and millions and millions of dollars to make an ultimate experience for the audience…they will spend their hard earned money to say…..thanks James Cameron for giving us such a great film…just cant enough of AVATAR and Pandora……tryin to hold off to see the movie again….for a 6th time….will wait till next weekend….
I have seen avatar every week since its opening weekend. I like fred cannot get enough. Going for 6th viewing tomorrow.
You need a life.
yea they both do
True, is time to move on.
@thunderfat: and so do you.. throwing a tantrum because someone likes something you don’t shows what a piece of S H I T you are
Awesome!!!
6 times?? thats badass!
Tonight was my 5th! I also can’t get enough of Pandora, the Na’vi, and Neytiri
get laid buddy forget avatar!
I never thought there would be fans more annoying than the Twilight crowd. I stand corrected.
Gwen you ignorant slut.. the fandom is completely different
I never thought there would be haters more annoying than Twilight haters. I stand corrected.
The fandom is not completely different. Superfans are superfans regardless of what they are a superfan of. I’m not choosing sides or anything, just saying.
Fred, I liked Avatar, but your argument in support of it is bad. Just because someone spends a lot of time and money on a project does not guarantee quality. Heidi Montag spent 3 years and $2 million dollars making an album, but it’s still a big fat turd.
I knew “Avatar” would come out on top again! At this rate, it will easily bag 25-30 million for the weekend and take down “The Dark Knight”. I figured “Legion” would place ok in the box office!
HAHAHA!! Stay mad, haters!! As soon as I saw this trailer I KNEW it would be the biggest grossing film of all time – it’s estimated to top $2 BILLION by the 30th Jan!!!
I personally loved it and have seen it twice in Imax 3D. But it’s not some people’s thing, and that’s up to them. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion.
And I am a twilight fan, so I dislike when people ban us all together as crazy fools. Cause while some of us certainly seem to be, not all of us need to be straitjacketed!
When I saw the footage back in August, I knew Avatar was going to break records. I knew it was going to be possible to beat Titanic. Avatar has done something that no other film has ever done. It’s the closest thing you’ll ever get to going to another planet.
Just watched Avatar again, taking all my friends with me. I’d rather them and myself watch a great movie rather than a mediocre one.
Haha to say you need an imagination in order to enjoy Avatar, and therefore if you don’t enjoy it you don’t have one, is just dumb. I really liked the movie, but that’s a terrible argument. Having an imagination doesn’t have any effect on how you felt about the writing, acting, direction, etc…
I think he/she is trying to say that some people just can’t enjoy movies anymore. The movie is meant to suck you into to the world and go on an adventure. Some people just spend too much time criticizing it that they forget how to enjoy a damn good piece of entertainment. And I’m sure you were one of those who were trying to find the flaws before the movie barely even started.
yeah, im with movielover, also, some people still look for things to be “realistic” when they go to the movies…something that i’ve always found ridiculous, unless you’re seeing a docu..
Avatar rocks! Anyone who can’t see that forgot to bring their inner child with them into the theater!
I’m gonna watch Legion today!
Who cares? Why is everyone obsessed on how much it makes.
Because it’s pretty darn interesting, actually.
I agree. When will we get the latest Limp Bizkit news? They’re cool because they spelled “biscuit” differently.
People care how much it makes because it’s going to break the domestic and worldwide records that have stood for 12 years. Not only that, but the director is going to break its own record. Like Avatar or not, you have to admit that it’s making history, that it HAS changed the layout of the film land and that it’s going to be around for a long time.
It’s about $75M off of Titanic’s domestic record and less than $100M off is global record. It should have the global record beat by the time this weekend’s global numbers come in, and it could be above Titanic by March. Again, like it or not, you have to admit how incredible this is. Titanic made what it did in several MONTHS. Avatar is going to do it in several WEEKS.
Once again, So?
Would you still enjoy the movie if it only made 20 million?
Why does it bother you that people are interested in Avatar’s box office success?
Sorry, one more thing. One thing I wish people would remember is that a.) ticket prices have gone up since 1997, b.) 3 D costs more, and most everyone sees it in 3 D, and c.) 3 D IMAX costs even more than that, and a lot of people hold out for that experience. So even though Avatar is rocking box office records, in terms of actual ticket sales, it’s doing really, really well…but not as well as it looks like on first glance. I’m just constantly stumped that NO ONE seems to mention this.
@Jennifer: Umm, lots of people mention this. You are not a unique snowflake. Still, how many movies have even gotten within spitting distance of Titanic’s record? Even if you account for 3D prices, that is still a pretty large achievement. Bottom line: James Cameron knows how to get butts in seats. Whether some people liked Avatar or not is not important. If I were IN the movie business, I would be watching this with great interest because getting people TO the movie theater is getting harder and harder. Unless you are James Cameron.
RA is right Jennifer. You’re not nearly as original or clever as you think, sadly.
Yeah, Avatar DOES have 3D prices. But people ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT. Also, Titanic didn’t have to compete with Web piracy, six-month cinema-to-DVD runs, widespread DVD ownership period, HDTV, etc. Compared to Avatar, Titanic had some pretty significant advantages on its own.
And I think it’s hilarious that Shamrock seems dead set on ruining everyone’s interest. If you don’t care, fine. But don’t act like people who do care are somehow beneath you, yeah?
that is very true!!! But see if TITANIC didnt make as much as it did…I trully think Avatar wouldnt be doing as well. I believe this because there are so many TITANIC fans that when JC new film came along they had to see it…and there have been more TITANIC fans since its box office run…so it makes sence…beatin Titanic yes it may but Titanic did set the record so you have to give it thumbs up for that!
I too have seen it five times, and oddly enough don’t really consider myself a SUPERFAN. I do love the movie, but the repeated viewings are more about enjoying the tech and experience for me. I loved Hurt Locker at home on the HD flatscreen. Avatar is all about the spectacle, and since it will be a few years before 3D TVs become more affordable, I feel like I have to enjoy it now while I can.
I think 5 is the minimum that puts you in the SUPERFAN category.
I agree With Joey, It was my 5th time today going to Pandora. It is more about the experience than picking apart the story. You just go and get swept away in it. On Tv now will not do this movie Justice. People are gladly playing a few extra dollars to have the experience.
there is no stopping avatar!!!
