Sundance: Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning rock out in 'The Runaways,' but the movie itself is no knockout

From the moment I arrived at Sundance, the movie that more or less everyone, including me, wanted to see most was The Runaways — and […] Read the full post.

I saw the film already and completely agree with this review. Its all over the place that youre not sure what angle its aiming at. Great performances but not memorable by any means.

Don’t give two sh**s for Kristen, but I like The Runaways, Joan, Lita and the others – THAT IS THE REASON I will see this.

NOT because of Kristen “Flash in the pan” Stewart.

    • benny

hmmm thats the flash in the pan who had 2 movies at sundance and people are raving about her? Roger Ebert says she is a fine actress among most other critics so shove it

    • Mariah

Flash in the pan? Uh, no. You may not like her, but don’t label her something she’s not. Kristen has been an indie darling for years. Long before Twilight.

She’s a decent actress, albeit with somewhat of a limited range. Frankly, I think doing Twilight was the worst decision of her career. That movie may have garnered her fame (which I’m not sure she wanted), but it cost her a lot of respect. People will doubt whether she can act because they’ll only remember her as Bella, a role which was poorly written and poorly directed (at least in the first film; haven’t seen the second)… and frankly, not anywhere near her best performance.

        to cas:
I agree that she certainly wasn’t good in Twilight, but she’s received some rave reviews for Welcome to the Rileys at Sundance from many prestigious critics.
Her being in Twilight gained her fans, if anything it was good for her career.

I’ll probably see this, since I saw a documentary about the Runaways a couple of years ago, and it was a pretty interesting story. Just wish that Go Go’s movie had gotten off the ground and come out first. THEY were the REAL deal.

Yes, the wonderful and talented Lita was a Runaway.

  • Justin

Kristen Stewart cant act, she never could. All she does is play the same damn emo girl in everything shes in. Please people stop giving her rolls.

    • PNK

      More rolls, please! And roles.

      • cas

        More rolls, fewer roles.

  • PNK

So the write-up here makes it sound pretty darn good! I don’t get these reviewers, who tell all these good parts of a movie, then say it isn’t so hot?!? Sounds kinda awesome, better than I’d thought. Think I’ll see it now!

Owen’s Sundance blog is always a good read. I think movie criticism works better in blog form — so the reviewer can watch the movie and give his or her immediate reaction.

If anyone saw the documentary that Vicki Blue (who replaced guitarist Jackie Fox and was a founder of the eighties band The Bangles)directed, she and the rest of the band pointd out how much of a bully Kim was. Kim Fowler tried to make it as a singer during the early 70’s glam rock period but only made a little splash with the song “Motorboat”. Sometimes when a person fails in the entertainment industry they try to put themselves into another persons shoes to make them feel important. The man was nuts.

For everyone who doesn’t like Kristen Stewart (probably mostly because of her association with Twilight) just remember this; She likely hates it just as much as you do, but the pay’s great and it’s her foot in the door to being a household name. She’ll go on to have a great career after the series is done unlike others like say Daniel Radcliffe who will always be seen as Harry Potter until the day he dies.

    • PNK

      She’s good in Panic Room!

    • Sara

      poor Daniel Radcliffe…

anyway, I disagree with you. she does not deserve to become a household name because she truly has no talent. people keep saying she plays the same roles, but she’s not, she’s just making them all seem the same. so there.

Great. Another rock bio-pic at Sundance. Doesn’t that make 3 already? (Last year was Joy Division; this year Lennon & Runaways.) This is one of the reasons why I stopped going to Sundance. It’s just an extention of the studio system. What a joke that people actually believe that Sundance is an INDEPENDENT film festival.

Ya know what, Owen? I am so excited to relieve this part of my life, my teenage years, complete with snarling and eyeliner and angst, that I don’t much care what you think of the movie or the performances. I have been waiting what seems like forever to see this story, so now I am livin’ the dream. So there, Old Man! Now, pass the Geritol…

  • Susan

I saw the film, and like Owen has noted, the performances were strong, but the movie itself was far from great.

    • Sally

I saw it as well, and I agree.
To be clear, Kristen Stewart gave a good performance, as Owen says here. After seeing the film, I have no doubts that other critics will agree.
But, as Susan said, the movie was very mediocre.

  • CraftySabine

I keep hearing about Joan and Cherie, but how was Lita Ford’s portrayal? As a kid, even thought I had black hair, I worshiped Lita.

  • ?

to each his own. let the haters love their miley or LiLo, but i’m lovin my KStew and Dakota. gonna watch this march. ROCK ON, DAKOTASTEN

  • Kate

EW is so pathetic. They praise Twilight like its the second coming of JC himself because Summit has a deal with them. Then, turn around and actually knock earnest artistic ventures. Please get back to me when you aren’t drooling over underage boys abs and I’ll take your opinion seriously.
