Here’s proof that this Oscar season needs to start wrapping up pronto: Last night I had a dream that I missed the nominations announcement. For some reason I was at a bowling alley with a bunch of friends (and I haven’t gone bowling in ages) and I realized it was 11:30 am on Oscar day, three hours after the press conference. I frantically tried to search for the nominees on my Blackberry and discovered to my shock that three of the Best Supporting Actor nominees were actors voicing cartoon roles. (My dream didn’t tell me who they were, unfortunately…otherwise that would have been an amazing scoop!)
Anyone out there have any advice on how I can avoid losing my mind between now and March 7? A nice long walk in Central Park? A marathon of Jersey Shore episodes? All suggestions are welcome.

LOL — hysterical. Hang in there, man.
Yoga! The YogaWorks in the city still have a 2 weeks for $30 deal going on for another few days.
Chamomile tea?
Well, I wouldn’t mind if Jenifer Lewis got a nomination for her voice acting in Princess and the Frog. (She was Mama Odie). That’s a voice-over nomination I would happily accept!
Thank you for this post. I’ve been laughing now for 10 minutes!
haha!!! Hang in there, Dave. I often tell people the oscars are my superbowl. Basically, after New Year’s, it’s what I probably think about most outside of personal bidness. Hey, it’s my thing. Let it be.
yes for years i have considered it my super bowl also– my friends (who can care less about the oscars) always look forward to my annual oscar party- just so they get free food and booze and watch me yell at the t.v. for 4 hours
Hibernate before the day before the announcements. There’s nothing to report on until then. Don’t take that to mean you’re coverage means nothing, I’m simply looking out for your mental health.
Jason Schwartzman – Fantastic Mr. Fox
catch up on some totally unrelated and escapist TV. something hilarious and relaxing.
Or start covering the Razzies! See the worst movies of the year and give us your predictions for those nominations as well. It may be lots of extra work in itself, but it will also counteract all this Oscar coverage.
I might suggest a life in general. Oscars are fun and all, but not worth devoting a life to talking about. Just sayin.
Might I suggest not trolling entertainment websites and telling entertainment journalists they shouldn’t write about entertainment. Maybe it is YOU who needs the life.
agreed. personally, i love all the pre-oscar stuff dave covers. if you dont, then this isn’t the place for you, ethan!
I’m sure you have some interest or hobby which others would consider frivolous and silly. My brothers spend untold amounts of money and time watching and following every detail regarding every sport imagineable. What’s the diff?
Ooooh I’m sorry, that always happens when you’ve been thinking about things a lot, but I’d rather have a dream about the Oscars than being a vector in a phyiscs equation (this has happened to me– twice)
I’d recommend some junk TV- not Jersey Shore per se, you could stick with the classucks like Rock of Love Bus!
You work for a great magazine and you are one of the best Oscar bloggers in the field. So please do whatever you need to relax! I would go crazy without your insight in the award ceremonies. Maybe splurge on a weekend vacation somewhere?
It makes sense; this year does feel particularly drawn out in my opinion. The Oscars might regain some relevance (not to mention ratings) if they weren’t the last belle to arrive at the ball.
As for how to maintain your sanity, it would be easier if there were any ’10 releases worth seeing! (Fish Tank FINALLY gets an L.A. release this weekend!)
Rest up, Karger. Less than a week ’til noms!
Only THREE of the nominees for Best Supporting Actor were for voice performances? To me, that’s proof that you need to dive even further into this year’s Oscar race! That number could’ve easily been four + Christoph Waltz.
(Seriously though, as someone who’s had dreams that are specifically horrifying only to people who do what I do, this blog post was hysterical.)
