Looks like toss-ups all around (sarcasm). A month or two ago this was a fun Oscar race with no guaranteed winners, now look what we have. Boooring.
I don’t know if I can agree about “guaranteed”. Sure, The Hurt Locker has been very successful in the run-up critics’ and guild prizegivings which makes it appear a “lock”. But, the far superior Brokeback Mountain did the same thing several years ago, until along came a film called Crash – which actors apparently adored (the largest branch of the Academy, btw).
I think there’s still potential for some surprise in the nominations, especially in exactly who will receive one of the ten nominations for Best Picture.
And in 2004, “Sideways” would have won as many preliminary awards as “The Hurt Locker” has this year. But the Oscar contest turned into a two-horse race between “Million Dollar Baby” and “The Aviator”.
But I doubt we’ll see The Hurt Locker take the back seat to an Avatar vs. IB race. For one thing, Bigelow is the frontrunner in the best director race. (Payne was never in that position.) And second, Sideways was beginning to run out of steam at this point. The Hurt Locker is showing no signs of letting up. If any best picture candidate is emulating Sideways, it’s Up in the Air (which I know I predicted would happen a month ago).
Um, hello, the sure-fire winners have been pretty much locked in all the acting categories for a few months now…and Best Picture is still totally up for grabs between two pictures. Nothing has changed at all in months…
And sadly, the HIGHLY overrated and pointless “Hurt Locker” will probably, and sadly, win over “Avatar” now (in directing too) when “Avatar” is by far, and INARGUABLY, the best film of the last decade, never mind the just the year.
AVATAR
Nice chart.
Just watched The hurt locker, its just overrated,i mean anyone can direct that movie.no way it will win any award.its just walk walk, stop, turn left or right nd shoot.its just another war movie,da thing about the bomb disposal while they are shooting each other its jst weird. The west part when Jeremy goes to the prof house with da DVD sales guy,it was unnecessary.
@ Arabang
Learn to write in proper English if you want your opinion to be taken seriously. I don’t even know what that last sentence meant. Maybe you were too stupid to notice the amazing technique Kathryn Bigalow infused the movie or missed the entire point of war as a drug. Everything you complained about made no sense and showed your opinion is devoid of any relevance.
Totally agree with you, Chris. Anyone who thinks that The Hurt Locker is overrated just doesn’t know anything about great filmmaking. Every scene in The Hurt Locker is crafted for maximum tension. Bigelow took an adequate script and infused her stamp upon it and easily made the best film of the year.
Meryl Streep was runner-up at the National Society of Film Critics.
By the way, I was censored the other day for using a 4 letter word that is usually choses instead of hades. Why was that so obscene but that last remark by arabang acceptable?
goes to show that the national board is on a different wavelength that every other critic and award group… seriously Clint for Best Director? puh-lease
Well, there will be 10 films nominated this year for Best Picture. When the ballots go out, we may see a surprise winner in this category. Some of the voters may not have seen all 10 films and may just pick a film they have seen and thought it was the best.
Excellent chart!!! Where are the BAFTA nominations, though? Those should be included! Also, what time/channel can we tune in for the big announcement Tuesday morning???
I really wish Carey Mulligan had more of a shot. She gave my favorite performance of 09.
ChrisV:
The time for the announcement depends. In Arizona, it’s at 6:30, I think. And for me, my local ABC news usually cuts to the announcement when it’s time. And E! usually cuts to it too.
hurt locker was a reel
dud. what should have been a very exciting docu was a 2+ hr snoozer w/little story and forgettable characters. anything but this should take home oscar.
I agree KM, Mulligan’s performance was also my favorite this year by a lead actress.
I think hurt locker will be the one!!!
A throwback to the real Hollywood, 10 pictures, could divide many a vote, still think Avatar will win it even though other pics deserve it. My choice for the Oscar:
Actor: Jeff Bridges
Actress: Meryl Streep
Sup Actor: Chris Waltz
Sup Actress: MoNique
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
It’s time for a woman to win Best Director. With all the computer graphics, is it truly a director directing the film or is it just great editing?
