In an interesting twist, one of this year’s top Oscar contenders has received a Razzie nomination a day before surely scoring an Oscar nod…albeit for a different film. Sandra Bullock was named among the five Worst Actresses of the Year for All About Steve, which was also nominated for Worst Picture. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Land of the Lost each received the most nominations, with seven. Here are the three major categories:
Worst Picture
All About Steve
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Land of the Lost
Old Dogs
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Worst Actor
Jonas Brothers, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience
Will Ferrell, Land of the Lost
Steve Martin, Pink Panther 2
Eddie Murphy, Imagine That
John Travolta, Old Dogs
Worst Actress
Beyoncé, Obsessed
Sandra Bullock, All About Steve
Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana: The Movie
Megan Fox, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Jennifer’s Body
Sarah Jessica Parker, Did You Hear About the Morgans?

I can see it now: “Transformers 2″ wins Worst Picture simply because it was the most popular movie of the summer (even though all those other nominees are probably much worse), Jonas Brothers win Worst Actor simply because they’re musicians (even though there is NO ACTING in a concert film), and Sandra Bullock wins Worst Actress simply because she might win an Oscar the very next day (even though that award has Beyonce’s name all over it).
On the contrary, I think you’re assuming way too much about their motives. If you look at numerous polls (including several on Fandango), a lot of people were sorely disappointed with Transformers 2. I’m not talking critics or pretentious movie snobs, I’m talking fans of the original who went in with *hugely* open minds and came out hating it. That being said, it also got terrible reviews.
All About Steve was panned roundly, as was Bullock’s choice to star in it.
As for the Jonas Brothers…you got me there lol.
“All About Steve was panned roundly, as was Bullock’s choice to star in it.”
A good actor chosen for a bad film is different from turning in a poor performance. If one cannot distinguish between these two attributes, one is not in a position to judge.
So, did Bullock really suck that badly, or was she simply in a really bad film?
She was not great in a really bad film that her production company produced. I still would love her to win the Oscar for Blind Side though. I love that girl.
I have to say I think she put in a great performance. If for some reason people didn’t like the character, (which is a little bit the point) then fair enough but she played the character to perfection and I have to say I thought it was pretty brave of her to play a women that “unconventional”. When I tell my Mrs about thhe raxxie I think she’ll be pretty shocked too.
Transformers 2 was definitely worse than GI Joe & Land of the Lost. I haven’t seen the other two, but they would have to be pretty wretched to be worse than the gigantic metallic turd that was Transformers 2. If it wins worst picture, it is deserved.
Congratulations. You’re able to review and rate movies without actually ever seeing them. Maybe EW should hire you as a critic.
you dont know what is bad until you see GI Joe… definitely one of the worst movies I’ve seen in quite a few years… and why is Terminator 4 not on the list? that movie made me want to demand my money back!
G.I. Joe was worse than Transformers 2, hands down. Land of the lost was intensely bad: One funny seen, and the rest was a brain enema.
@filmfam. PEABRAIN! THINK before you speak. Leslie stated that he/she thought Transformers 2 was worse than GI Joe & Land of the Lost. Leslie then said he/she hadn’t seen the other two (Old Dogs & All About Steve) Leslie didn’t review or rate the movies not seen, just COMPARED them.
Critical thinking skills: get ‘em!
Thanks Robert Loblaw, I’m glad one person actually understood what I was saying. Just to clarify for everyone else, I HAVE seen T2, GI Joe, & Land of the Lost, & have NOT seen Old Dogs & All About Steve. My opinion was based on the 3 movies I have seen.
Yeah I’ve got to agree with Grace here. GI Joe is truly one of the worst movies ever made. Corny diaologue, plot holes, horrible acting, etc. Really, the list goes on and on. I felt like I was losing IQ points watching it. Also, All About Steve was awful as well. I couldn’t even finish it.
How can you possibly say a movie is worse than another movie you have not seen? I never turn movies off. EVER. but Land of the Lost was a first. I never post in these comment things but Land of Lost was sooooo bad that I feel it is my duty to post a comment on how horrible that movie was. That movie will win this award hands down.
I would rate GI JOE infinitely higher than Transformers. I completely agree with all the criticisms (ie Bad acting, plot holes, ect) but the point is that GI JOE was a GI JOE movie. Whereas, Transformers was just the same shitty movie Michael Bay has been making his entire career, it just happened to have robots in it this time. I got what I wanted out of GI JOE, that being a movie that was like the cartoon. Transformers failed phenomenally at that, as well as at everything else.
Arguing about which is worse, Transformers or G.I. Joe, is like looking in a toilet and arguing about which turd looks least edible. They are both two of the worst movies ever made, and anyone who can think of any reason to defend either one basically fails at life.
Leslie is entirely unclear here, I can see where the confusion arised. And where does it say we have to hold TF2 to the same standards as drama?
TF2 is an action flick with loads of special effects. Character development doesn’t enter into it.
Leslie, I saw all three films on DVD. Land of the Lost was the worst. These films had nothing to do with intelligent script, characters or good acting, just bang-up special effects.
it could also be that, y’know, all three were the worst in their respective categories. just a thought.
I’m guessing from your post that you are a pre-pubescent girl, right? Shouldn’t you be focusing on school or something? Transformers was one of the worst big budget movies ever.
EW strategically cut out the categories that TWILIGHT was nominated for. It got a WHOPPING 4 NOMINATIONS!
really? interesting… (and deserved)
I was about to mention that but you beat me to it, lol. Typical, EW. They’re well deserved nominations.
4? Nice.
AK – you won’t be going on Jeopardy anytime will you?
What the hell does that mean?
Popular doesn’t always equal best. Transformers 2 was so boring that I took a little nap despite all the noise. There’s a lot of success pap on TV but very little of it is “good.” Megan Fox is kinda like a Harley-Davidson: nice to look at yet a pain in the butt to maintain.
Megan Fox looks slutty in that movie, she’s like overproduced. “More LIPS! No, no no, LESS belly”. I like a flat stomach as much as anyone but this is too much.
AK spends his days posting paranoid delusions on the internet, just because he has no life, and thus nothing else to do with his time.
Yo, AK, I’m really happy for you, and I’mma let you finish, but Leslie had one of the best comments of all time!
I loved Tranformers 1 & 2. My daughter and I watch them all the time.
Agreed. These awards are the definition of lame, targeting big-budget, mostly high-profile, successful films. Where is Whiteout? Where is Did you Hear About the Morgans, beyond SJP? Where is Malin Akerman for Watchmen? I hated Transformers 2 but it was no Love Happens. And GI Joe, as cornball as it was, many critics enjoyed it, especially Sienna Miller’s (Razzie-nominated) performance. If you want evidence of the awards’ irrelevance and lack of wit, short-handing Transformers to Trannies 2 (?!) should help.
Where is Did you Hear About the Morgans, beyond SJP? Where is Malin Akerman for Watchmen? I hated Transformers 2 but it was no Love Happens.
Transformers 2 suck a**!
Hey I don`t think Gi Joe should be on there. Sure there were a lot of people who thought it sucked but it actually suprised me. It is going to be a great cult classic. I would have replaced it with New Moon. Yeah I went there. I know it sucked and knowing is half the battle.
G.I. Joe is no masterpiece, but it delivers a much more fun experience than any of the other films on the list.
I agree. I was pleasantly surprised by GI Joe and can’t wait until the sequel comes. I can’t believe it got as many nominations as it did.
I don’t understand. Transformers made tons of money, so it can’t be bad. That’s the reasoning on other threads when talking about Avatar.
Not entirely sure how you can compare Transformers and Avatar, but okay.
Not comparing the two movies.
Well it sounds like you are.
miss k – You need to read more carefully. A was simply pointing out that many people have used the fact that Avatar has made oodles of money as an indicator that it’s a good movie – which it is NOT.
A movie making a ton of money does not mean it is good. The only reason is made money was so boys could watch stuff blow up and drool over Megan Fox. Everything else about this movie was horrible.
It was also a franchise. You can’t say the same about Avatar.
Thank you!! Avatar should win a Razzie for Worst Screenplay. It’s sad how dazzling special effects can still drown everyone’s ability to recognize a rehashed, watered down, mindlessly simple story.
Avatar is a very good movie. I agree screenplay wasn’t strong but that wasn’t second grade either. It was a herculion task to make a movie strong in each and every aspect. Avatar is a ground breaking movie in so many aspects that I don’t mind the fact its based on a simple story.
Ray – Simple story?? How about predictable, boring, rehashed? It was awful. Yeah, it was pretty, but in ten years, it will not hold up.
In ten years time they’ll still be re-hashing the same plots. Avatar is not the only movie guilty of unoriginal / recycled plots. It isn’t the first, it won’t be the last. The story itself was given an original, dazzling spin. Some of the dialogue was a bit iffy in a few spots although anybody who thinks the screenplay is crap because of terms like ‘unobtainium’ and ‘flux vortex’ need to get an education.
There is a certain built-in audience that can make a movie a smash even if it sucks. Since Transformers 2 was a sequel to one of the biggest Summer blockbusters of the last few years, it was automatically a shoe-in for making “tons of money”.
The difference rests in the sweep of “Avatar”‘s audience. It has made north of $2 billion, something no other movie in history has done. Now, you can tack this up to inflation, true, but in terms of sheer scope, it is unheard of. “Transformers 2″ eclipsed $800 million worldwide, a healthy take, but certainly not indicative of its quality. It takes a movie of enormous critical, commercial, and boundary-pushing appeal to resonate with an audience like “Avatar”, which is why it might make more sense to point to its domestic and worldwide appeal as *one* argument in favor of its quality.
Not that I’ve read. Also as Transformers was a sequel to a recognised and beloved property AND to an incredibly successful and well liked movie it was bound to makes a lot of money.
Comparing the two is a fallacy as Avatar is performing like no other movie since Titanic AND is after just 7 weekends heading into the all time, worldwide ADJUSTED top 5, most likely to settle at number 3. It just isn’t the same at all.
There may be one or two that say it’s popular ergo it is good; which by the way is true, if the number one aim of a movie, most movies, is to entertain then a film that makes a record amount of money and keeps getting people back for 2nd 3rd and 4th viewings is a good and successful movie.
Now what many are saying, and here’s the key is that the film has been critically lauded; AND is making lots of money AND the overwhelming majority of people are saying it’s a great movie with many saying the best movie they’ve seen; THAT means it is good, not just because lots of money is being spent on it but because as well as critics the majority of over $2b worth of punter say it is a good movie AND a classy one. There’s the making money = good movie. No film is 100% loved by all but a whole bunch of people think Avatar is an amazing film. Some don’t and their minds are unlikely to be changed but why they remain so intent on telling the majority of critics and the paying public that a film has little artistic merit when it clearly has that and more to most people I don’t Know. It isn’t 2012 or The Day After Tomorrow or The Mummy Returns (which fair enough is nothing more or less than pure “entertainment” and doesn’t pretend otherwise). So why so much interest in running the film down? You’ve seen it, you didn’t love it, and you’ve said so, move on?
Oh and I agree about Terminator 4, how that escapes and All about Steve and Jonas Brothers a flaming concert film for crying out loud!) Get on I don’t know. Stealth giant robots and mines that blow holes in the chest whilst leaving the clothes neatly buttoned up, Pure class there.
You know what, at least someone remembers Sandra Bullock made a stinker this year too. All I hear is what a great year she had with “The Proposal” and “The Blindside” (and not to knock either, since I haven’t seen them), and nobody ever mentions “All About Steve.”
You saw one Sandra Bullock movie this year and it was “All About Steve”, then thats your own fault.
Actually I didn’t see any Sandra Bullock movies last year. And yes, if I had gone to see “All About Steve,” that would be my own fault.
I wish Sandra Bullock would choke to death on Jesse James tiny greasy redneck c0ck.
Shouldn’t you be making racist comments on youtube, or shooting your mom’s cat with a pellet gun or wondering why you get that tingly feeling that freaks you out so much when they make you wrestle in gym class?
youtube? i’m thinking myspace. a trashy forum befitting of a trashy commenter
razzies are kind of mean, but with all the dozens of over the top awards the film industry indulges itself with, they’re needed. they should be televised.. maybe on Spike or something…
The razzies are needed nowadays since Hollywood thinks everything they make is gold.
agreed! that is one awards show i would love to watch. too bad very few nominees would be in attendance
I think only Halle Berry was brave enough to go get hers.
There was some acting bits in the Jonas movie and they were awful. Worst actors ever.
oh please…. Transformers made a large portion of its money on its opening weekend. That’s the difference between Transformers and Avatar. Avatar only made half of what Transformers did on its opening weekend, but it has made money consistently the entire time it has been in theaters. That’s also the case with “New Moon” which saw half of its total earnings come on the first weekend.
Nobody is comparing the two movies artistically, was making the point that some base how great a movie is just based on how much money it makes.
I’m not sure what worst picture means but i think it means the quality of the picture. It may not have been a good movie the quality of the picture was good
G.I. Joe sucked on toast. It deserved every award it was nominated for. The only thing is missing is that cardboard cut-out named Channing Tatum as Worst Actor.
I’m still trying to figure out from the first Transformers what was the point of leaving the open desert to a populated city
TOTALLY.It was a really fun movie, but that was a really lame transition.
F_ck the Razzies. Why do these idiotic awards get so much media attention? Yeah, people make bad movies — even bad really popular movies — but who are these losers to nominate anyone and mock them? Let’s see what they could accomplish if they had to do something creative. Or better yet call me when someone gives them millions of dollars to make a film. This is back-biting petty jealousy at its worst.
yeah i’m sure they’re jealous of miley cyrus’ overbite or megan fox’s plastic tits. you’re totally right.
They’re jealous of their money and fame, you empty-headed fool.
…that was fuc*ing hilarious!!!!!
Jon-look at the Razzies as an antidote to Hollywood’s orgy of self congratulation and adulation that crops up every year. It’s a minor ego check, that you do have to admit, is sometimes needed.
agreed. And I’m a big fan of self-congratulatory awards shows. But there’s also plenty of room for someone to point out the not so fabulous films of the year too. It’s a wonder how some movies are greenlighted and it’s a wonder what movie execs will produce in the hopes of making a dollar.
Jon-look at the Razzies as an antidote to Hollywood’s orgy of self congratulation and adulation that crops up every year at this time. You have to admit, sometimes, Hollywood needs an ego check.
Take a deep breath and relax, Jon. The Razzies are just for fun. Even the stars and directors who get nominated think it is funny. They are not meant to be taken seriously. Otherwise those who are nominated wouldn’t go to the awards ceremony.
If you think these actors or directors think this is “fun” — to be publicly mocked and told they suck — then you are sadly mistaken.
They almost never do. The reason it was noteworthy that Halle Berry went to accept hers was because that’s something none of the nominees do.
Jon, using your logic consumer guides should stop making lists of bad products, or worst products in X category lists?
I am glad the razzies exist. If the shame of getting one prevents just one bad movie from being made, or one good actor from taking a possible razzie part then its done its duty. Yes, I am also in favor of bringing the dunce cap back into classrooms. Public shaming, or the fear of, is a great motivator. Look how society has moved away from public shaming and how standards have been dropping right along with it, coincidence nope. When stupidity goes unpunished it only continues and keeps getting worse.
Jon, calm down. This is just for comedy, and Hollywood needs to be constantly evaluated cuz if no one ever told them they were screwing up they would screw up on a more constant basis.
Jon, they are (mostly) adult. And they work in a business that demands having a thick skin. I don’t think Sandra will be crying over a razzie when she adds an Oscar to her mantle. Save your sympathy for people who need it. I only get mad when actors’ appearances are criticized at the expense of us regular people. Acting=fair game.
You can question who the nominators are but the people who vote on the Razzies are people like you and me. All you have to do is join their group and you get to vote and you also get to attend the ceremony if you want. I’m a member and I vote every year.
Jon, you’re a putz. LONG LIVE THE RAZZIES!
I agree with Jon. The Razzie people are a bunch of failed writers, directors and actors. I believe there is a bit of jealousy there. Where are the movies from these Razzie people? People just like to pick on the rich and famous and of course everyone here is attacking Jon because you’re all sad and broke too. Jealous much?
No need to get worked up about. A lot of actors will tell you off the record that they KNEW it was a crappy film while they were working on it. Sandra Bullock is exactly one of them. I really admired her when she told what she really thought of Speed 2. She said something like, it was called Speed 2, for pity’s sake but even power jets were outracing us. For that I will always like her.
I think it comes down to whetehr you vote for the absolute ‘worst’ film or the most disappointing.
Actually Jon, I would like to see what Michael Bay could accomplish if he tried to do something creative.
Oh yeah, Pearl Harbor…never mind.
The Jonas Brothers? For a concert movie?
Miley Cyrus? For Hannah Montana?
I have to say I usually enjoy the Razzies, but with Miley, it was a glorified episode of Hannah Montana made for kids.
Transformer 2 fans, stop being so defensive. Not everyone who hated Transformers 2 was a cynic. I loved the first one, but the second was just awful.
Yeah, Miley Cyrus isn’t the greatest actress, but she did as good as she would in an episode of Hannah Montana.
I can think of 10 other female performances that were way worse than Miley’s.
And Jonas Bros. I hate them as much as the next person, but this is just stupid…
This will seriously hurt Bullock’s Oscar chances. Just like Eddie Murphy’s were ruined by “Norbit” and Anne Hathaway’s by “Bride Wars”. But that’s ok I guess.
I don’t think it will really have an impact. Eddie Murphy and Anne Hathaway were hurt by the fact that their movies came out during award season so it was fresh in people’s minds. “All About Steve” came and went months ago.
i can’t tell if jul is being facetious and anna is a little too literal. regardless, i’m entirely sure the razzies had absolutely nothing to do with the oscars. hathaway lost to an amazing kate winslet, doubt bride wars had anything to do with that. as for eddie murphy, he’d been making razzie-worth movies prior to ever even being nominated (the klumps?!) and yet he still was nominated. doubt the academy awards give a crap about the razzies. btw, i was eagerly anticipating transformers 2 since the first one came out. ug, what a waste of my time.
It will have no impact. Halle Berry has both an Oscar and a Razzie (for Catwoman).
whoa, she won the razzie AND the oscar for Catwoman?!?
Ha ha, Sean, she won the Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” and a Razzie the following year for “Catwoman,” although I admit that the phrasing of Sal’s comment is somewhat misleading
