You can blame it on Adrien Brody. Read the full post.

Dave youre spot on. The 4 races are as locked as they have ever been, which is quite boring for Oscar buffs. All this talk of upsets is just trying to generate hits and sales

dave, you say picture & original screenplay are the tight categories–not best Actress too??? do you think sandra’s that well set? I feel like that’s maybe the closest race of them all! Sure, it was nominated best picture (which DEFINITELY helps a lot), but it’s her first nomination (the nomination is recognition enough?) and with Meryl having not won in 27 years (and only winning actress once before, which isn’t sufficient for a woman whom many consider to the best actress ever), I’d think that her strikingly effervescent work might swing through. I’d love to hear why you predict sandra, and so confidently… pray tell!

If the Academy really wanted to award Streep again, the would have last year with Doubt. She was lauded several times over for the role before the Oscars, and Doubt managed a number of high profile noms.
Compare this to Julie & Julia, where she is the sole nominee.
The Academy would love to give her another award, but they’re waiting for a personal best before doing it. And that is a whole column in itself…

underfor5–in my opinion you are overlooking the factor of competition. It was Winslet’s time to win last year. Is it Bullock’s time this year? This is far & away the least competitive year for best actress I have ever seen. If Doubt were this year, Meryl would easily win. The fact that it’s Julie & Julia instead is the only reason it’s close. Sure the Blind Side was nominated best picture, but with the new 10 pictures setup, that doesn’t mean nearly as much, and it was nominated nothing else. I’m not saying it’s definitely Streep; I’m just voicing that I think it’s far too close to say it’s Bullock’s.

Finally saw Crazy Heart, and I’m completely behind Jeff Bridges. However, what if CH was released in 2008, and he had to compete with Mickey Rourke? Surely they would have both been nominated, but they each give equally nuanced variations on the same theme. Could Bridges have beaten Sean Penn? Pointless questions, but the mid-Atlantic blizzard allows such trivial examination right now.

I really hope Streep and Bullock tie for Best Actress!!!

I some what agree with you Dave. There is a possibility for an upset but I do agree with the three acting races being pretty much set in stone. The only real up in the air one is Best Actress between Sandra and Meryl. I’ve seen Julia and Julia and thought she was mesmerizing and though I havn’t seen The Blind Side, the short snippet you showed on your Oscar Watch was such a shock, that scene I have never seen Sandra so versitile. So I’d like either of them to win, but if there is any chance for an upset it is in this catagory, cuz they could split the vote and perhaps Carey or Gabourey can take the gold

Sandra Bullock does show a side of her many didn’t expect, and like Justin said, that is versatility so I don’t get the Bullock hate, seriously.

But for those that say they’re going to win, beware that people get sick of hearing about it, meaning the voters, and buzz does die down.

I’d say what, 6-8 weeks ago everyone said Clooney and Up In The Air were surefire bets for SAG’s, Globes, etc. Not to be. Bridges took both, Basterds took SAGS and Avatar (blech) took Globes.

I’m going to say you just can’t say for sure in any category who’s going to win.

I like Sandra, but Hollywood and movie-goers are so taking Meryl for granted! So many nominations and no recent win. It’s time for Julie/Julia.

First off, if Bridges wins, it is not a career award, he is utterly fantastic in Crazy Heart, pulls you in all the way. So does Gyllenhall and the fact the Academy recognized her when other awards didn’t shows she has support. I still feel for Bullock as it’s the Julia Roberts/Reese Witherspoon factor, a major Hollywood box office starlet ready to take the final step up and the fact she’s pretty likeable off-screen helps too. Guess we’ll see though.
