Next 'Spider-Man' movie coming in 3-D

Spider-Man’s webs will be coming right at you. Sony Pictures announced today that the next iteration of Spider-Man will be heading to theaters in 3-D on July 3, 2012. The move isn’t a surprising one considering how every big tentpole movie seems to be programmed with the third dimension in mind. And with a 2012 date on the books, there should be enough 3-D screens to support what’s sure to be a giant run for Sony’s most important franchise. 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb is set to direct the film based on James Vanderbilt’s script. Now all we need to know is who’s gonna play Spidey.

BOOOOOO!! BRING BACK RAIMI, MAGUIRE AND THE REST OF THE CAST!! YOU WILL LOSE ALOT OF FANS AND THIS MOVIE I PROMISE YOU WILL TANK SONY!! A TRUE SPIDEY FAN!!! NICK CHAVEZ II

    • Jay

Are you serious? Alot of people hated it because of most of that cast. the only people that should come back is Raimi.

      • you are stupid

      • Jay

I’m stupid? And yet you guys are the ones who keep sobbing over how terrible the 3rd one was. Maybe you’re stupid? Seeing as how you didn’t even know how to spell your name. just … lol

      • yomamastupid

who are these a lot people you r talking about? i loved the cast and didnt have a problem with Toby McGuire as spidey, and raimi is more than one person? idiot

      • JM

I have to agree with Jay on this one. The third movie was a steaming pile of crap, and Kirstin Dunst looked like she had been living on the streets through the whole movie. A new cast is needed, but bring back Sam Raimi.

      • Anne

Uh, no, most people only disliked the 3rd one because of the weak script… the first two were critical as well as commercial successes. Tobey Maguire was iconic in the Spiderman role. I won’t be seeing this new one, nor will my teenage son; he thinks this “re-boot” idea is ridiculous and he is definitely the target demographic group for a movie like this.

      • ashly

To remake a movie that is still so new in the public’s brain, I think is ridiculous. Here’s one person that won’t be going to see it.

      • barron

        make one about spiderman 2099

    • Nick T

I completely agree! Raimi, Maguire, and Dunst all rule. I don’t care about the third one. Everyone deserves another chance. Especially them!

    • corndog

I thought 500 Days of Summer was great, but I think Marc Webb is making a terrible choice jumping into this project. He’s out of his league.

This is going to be a major tent-pole production with a heck of a lot of stakeholders’ investments riding on its success. Webb doesn’t have the artistic clout to stand up to the Producers and they will eat him for lunch. Meanwhile, the fans are already prepared to savage the movie. And to make matters even worse, the production is being fast-tracked (ala X-Men 3) so they’re going to have to cut corners everywhere to bring it in on budget.

I predict that Webb will walk off this before shooting begins. It’ll start with fighting over the casting, and then there will be fights over budget and locations. He’ll realize he’s in a sh#tshow, and bail.

Mark my words, the film will either remain in production limbo for years, or the studio will bring in a hack director to put something tepid together. Maybe the director of Fantastic Four (who was that?) or Daredevil.

Even Raimi admitted that the last film was weak because of studio pressure. I know Raimi didn’t want to put Venom in the movie, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t want Sandman either.

      • Paul

I think you’re mostly right, except for that very last sentence. Raimi wanted Sandman – there’s no POSSIBLE way that the studio would have ever chosen him as a tentpole villain. Sandman’s also one of the old-school villains, which fits in well with the choices Raimi made for the first two movies.

      • The Dude

Paul is correct the studio forced Raimi to include Venom, he had wanted to have sandman in the both of the pervious installments but couldn’t work him in, for this one he wanted it to be all abount sandman.

I really hope corndog is right about Spiderman getting stuck in development limbo because pretty soon the rights revert back to Marvel (I think 2012) and Spiderman belongs in the evolving Marvel Universe not in Sony limbo.

      • Rob

I don’t think anyone is out of their league when it comes to making one of these movies as long as they have an understanding of the character. Case in point – Iron Man. What the hell did John Favrue do on a scale of that movie? Swingers? And Iron Man, along with The Dark Knight pretty much saved the “hero” genre. You had Ang Lee, a great director, do the Hulk and that was…well…a steaming pile of crap.
As for the people ready to bash this…already crying foul…good lord…hasn’t the Batman Reboot proven anything? People cried fowl when Burton and Keaton left (and ok, they were right)…but then comes another small-time director who knocks it out of the park.
Considering these movies are based on comic’s, who switch writers, inkers, designers and story lines all the time, what is the concern? Is there only one spiderman in “the real world?”
Get over yourselfs. Yes, Raimi is great (and also inexperienced with MEGA blockbusters before Spiderman)

It’s a movie. Watch it…then decide if you like it or not. Anything else is foolish.

      • Leah

Dang right Rob! That was one of the most intelligent comments I’ve read in a long time. You haven’t seen so much as a trailer people! You don’t know the first thing about the tone of the movie or who will be writing the script or acting in it. All superhero movies are tricky because you’re taking a story and characters that people are extremely emotionally invested in. But the whole point of remakes is to re-envision and reinvent while sticking true to the values of the mythos (that and to make a crap-load of money off a ready fan base). Don’t be closed minded, give it a chance!

    • Tim

For the most part I agree. Raimi, yes bring him back, Toby?, maybe although he does fit the Peter Parker role pretty good, his voice is way too whiny, he sounds like a little boy. But Kirsten Drunkst as MJ, NO WAY! Look I grew up on Spiderman comics, even in the first ones, you got the impression that MJ and Gwen Stacy were very hot babes. Kirsten is NOT, she falls very flat in that regards, and she can’t act. So yeah, I’m willing to see how they reboot Spiderman, all I can say is they have some big shoes to fill and they had better do it right or the franchise is over for sure.

      • Kylie

Rob you are brilliant. That is my comment exactly.

I like 500 Days of Summer. It may be brilliant.

    • May Bills

Wow Jay you ARE REALLY RETARTED!!!! Everyone I know LOVED that movie! Even the worst critic in the world said it was AMAZING!!! Idk who in the right mind wouldnt love those movies. Old cast ftw.

  • tvgirl48

Am I the only one out there who really doesn’t care for 3-D? I guess I’m just an old geezer then when it comes to how I like my movies. Then again, I’m 19, so maybe I’m just weird :-)

    • Joe

I agree, tvgirl. And they’re trying to make this the new way to watch TV at home, too? Who wants to sit around the house in those goofy glasses to watch TV. And who wants to buy a new TV so soon after just buying an HDTV?

    • Isaac

unless a movie needs to have 3-D, It was interesting to see UP in 3D because of the baloons, but other than that… they could have done without. And except for Spidey literally jumping out of the movie screen, there’s no reason for 3D. And I agree with Joe as well. The Michael Jackson memorial at the Grammies was just ruined for me. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO WEAR GLASSES!

    • PinkDemon

No!!!! ur not weird at all i hate 3-D movies they need to go back to the original way.

    • Anon

Hey, I’m 19 too, and I don’t like 3D. Not even Avatar’s 3D. I think they still have a ways to go before 3D actually becomes a comfortable viewing experience. It’s absolutely possible to do 3D without glasses, but it requires holographic projection.

    • Caitlin

The only movie I’ve seen 3D done right was Avatar. Most movies can’t pull it off. It’s just not that fun to watch with 3D, and there’s no point to it for most movies.

      • Paul

I thought Monster House was done well.

    • chickenbutt

I am 40, and I hate the glasses. The Depth of field is nice with 3D, but otherwise I get a headache.

    • carl

I saw Avatar twice in 2D, never in 3D. I happen to have vision in only one eye so, at a 3D movie, I have to wear the glasses just so the image isn’t blurry but otherwise get no benefits. I don’t care if they make 3D movies but they need to have screens showing it in 2D as well just like they did for Avatar.

    • strickens_girl

I can’t watch 3D movies…literally. They make me violently ill. I’m really starting to hate this whole 3D fad. It seems like they are doing it for everything now.

  • inconsequential

Nick Chavez–being a true spidey fan, you liked Spiderman 3 I suppose? Because, coming from a long-time comic collector, that movie was TERRIBLE! Really, after that movie, I am fine with rebooting the franchise and pretending spidey 3 never happened…

    • NCIS Fan

I agree totally !! I don’t mind the re-boot as long as we wipe out Spiderman 3. Not too sure about it in 3D but I guess we’ll see…….

    • Roo Roo McMoo

but it wasn’t as bad as SuperMan 3…

  • Katie

OK, Spider-Man 3 was bad, but not franchise-killing bad. It was still light years ahead of, say, Batman and Robin.
This just seems to be adding up to disaster. No Raimi and no Maguire, AND jumping on the 3D fad-wagon? Blech.

    • Sarah

I agree Katie. I didn’t mind Spidey 3 (though it wasn’t my favorite of the franchise) so I think for Spidey 4 they need the original cast and Raimi back. Is there an online petition for this or something???

    • harry

      This may Bomb!

    • Sam

I agree with Katie. Spidey 3 was bad, but it wasn’t franchise-rebooting bad. Taking Tobey Maguire out of it all together is just such a bad move to me.

    • TK

Yeah… it was pretty bad, but it wasn’t X-Men 3 bad, and they keep pumping out those movies despite the fact that Hugh Jackman is way too gay to play Wolverine.

      • Caitlin

I liked X-men 3. I love Hugh Jackman. Spider-man 3 sucked though. With that said, I’m not excited for a new cast. It’s too soon for me.

      • Dean

I thought 3 was mediocre, but then again, studio suits pushing crap down the throats of Raimi and the actors certainly didn’t help.

      • Billy

While both X3 and Spidey 3 were both bad, I’d say S3 was much worse. Also, I think a reboot is necessary. If the movie is set for 2012, that would make Tobey Macguire 37 yrs old. Way too old to playing Peter Parker. Spiderman needs to be a kid.

    • rome

no, it WAS franchise-killing bad. it was so horrible. so why should they bring back the same people that screwed up so badly? and TK, X-men 3 is good. definitely the best x-men movie.

  • Dave

Ugh, PLEASE someone put an end to this annoying 3D fad!!!

    • Andre

Just wait until they install the shake seats and aroma atomizers!

I want the actors and crew to come to my living room and act it all out for me!

      • gaby george

        bravo and well said!

    • dylan

x-men 3 the best, spider-man 3 was better than that piece of sh*t (and that is saying something). Secondly I wont even be able to watch a commercial for this movie if Toby Maguire isn’t in it.

      • Billy

He’s too old now to be spiderman

      • Tim

Ha! Was Harrison Ford too old to play Indiana Jones??! I Think not! *snort*

      • X702

Listen, I believe its a good idea for a reboot after what they did with spiderman3. Big mistake was killing off venom… second picking that actor to play eddie brock… Lastly, Kirsten Drunkst as MJ no, just no… Raimi has to go. He screwed up the whole movie with the love story especially in spiderman2 with her running throught the partk… Guys theyre gonna bring back venom with this reboot… C’mon, you know you want him back…

      • info

Tobey Maguire made this choice for himself. He made it very clear that physically Spiderman was very hard on him. So, everyone who is having issues with Tobey not being in this movie needs to get over it. That was his choice.

  • Elizabeth

Marc Webb did a great job with 500 Days, so I think we’re in good hands, though the two are completely different genres. And if they’re relationship made Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I would be the happiest person alive.

    • Elizabeth

*if their relationship made Joseph G-L play Spidey.
kinda lost my train of thought there.

      • Weskimo

No no NO!!! Joseph G-L should NOT play Spidey! He would look like a woman in the spider-suit and we need someone with a manly physique to be Spidey. I wouldn’t mind if Zooey Deschanel was MJ and maybe Joseph G-L could play another character, but Spider-Man needs to be just that – a man.

  • Matt

What about Jeremy Sumpter as the next spider-man.

  • ian g

spiderman in 3-d, because the spidey suit can NEVER be tight enough!

  • shamon

captain America and the avengers plus spider-man is marvel sure about this .

    • NCIS Fan

They do seem to be putting A LOT in the basket at the same time.

    • Quirky

They’re all Marvel characters but the movie rights are held by different companies. Marvel controls the Avengers/Iron Man/Hulk/Capt America movies, Sony controls Spiderman, while Fox controls Fantastic Four/Daredevil/etc.

      • Sai Baba O’Riley

Well, you’ve seen how well Fox has done with those movies.

      • gerga

and that’s the reason Iron Man rocks while the others were “good”… (talking bout the x-movies of course, webslinging was never so crappy, and tobey SO sucked at being spidey! go back to the cider house m’boy!)

  • sarccastro

Umm…EW? Where have you been? I’m really surprised this news that was reported yesterday hasn’t ended up on your site yet:
    http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-chris-nolan-hell-mentor-superman-3-0-while-preparing-3rd-batman/

  • charlieromeobravo

I think the comment they made over at Techland sums it up best. 3D won’t cover up the suck, it will only bring it closer to your face.

    • guest

      well put, charlieromeobravo.

while i agree that spider-man 3 was bad, let’s remember that it was the Raimi-Maguire tandem that gave us 1 and 2, which were not only box office hits but critically acclaimed films as well.

  • Joseph

Thanks for the warning. I will try hard to miss it. Let me explain it to you. No Raimi. No Tobey Maguire. No Spiderman 4. NO INTEREST!!!!!

  • Ryan

    TOBEY MAGUIRE as Peter Parker!
    Kirsten Dunst as M.J. Watson!
Dylan Baker as Dr. Curt Conners/The Lizard

    Sam Raimi directing!

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the idea of a rebooted franchise a mere ten years after it began in the first place! Give us the further adventures!

I WILL NOT be going to this!

  • nezo

Let me put this into perspective for people who actually think this will top Raimi’s movies. Sony is trying to go on the cheap with this new reboot, reportedly only willing to shell out $80 Million. $80 was the budget for the first X-men movie (I love the X-men films, well the first 2 anyways) and that was 10 years ago.

  • rebecca

That’s either the same weekend the Star Trek sequel is coming out, or the weekend after. Hmph. I’m definitely rooting for Trek over this.
