OscarWatch TV: Close-up on the actresses

In the second of our six OscarWatch videos, Missy Schwartz and I take a closer look at the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress races. Is Sandra Bullock the most brilliant Oscar campaigner ever? Can anyone really challenge Mo’Nique for the win? Watch Missy and me tackle these and other all-important issues below. And let me know how you feel about these races on Twitter (@davekarger).

Mo’Nique gave the best performance of the year in any movie I saw.

  • DENISE B

Loved Mo nique in Precious. Blind Side to me was a wonderful movie and thought when watching for the first time there was something special about her performance and the movie Have seen many times since and think Sandara has the edge even though i think for a first time actress gabby in Precious was great. Also loved carey mulligan in The education but is Mo nique’s time She sure is deserving Has been around a minute

    • madd

It was An Education. I do think Monique should win, but not because it’s her time. What other movies has she been in, Hair Show?

    • UGH

Let us all pray that Sandra Bullock does not win.

    • springs

Monique and Carey Mulligan aren’t competing against each other.

  • spot

This was Sandra Bullock’s biggest box office year of her career. Actress of the year? Maybe. Best actress? No, definitely not. She wore a wig, picked up an accent and scrunched her eyes meaningfully when it was warranted. The role’s done several times every year. She was just in the right place at the right time.

    • mike

      You’re spot-on, Spot!

  • Celia

Mo’Nique has got it in the bag.
I’m still not sold on Sandra winning the Oscar though. I think they might give it to Meryl Streep.

  • Ronnie

Bullock is now just using her self-deprecation as schtick and manipulation. I’ve really come to dislike her these past few weeks.

    • Ben

Agree – false humility all the way. Annoying and obnoxious.

      • stéphane

oh! my God! sometimes I love u guys. S.Bullock is nothing but a big slice of baloney…

      • madd

I used to like Sandra, I really did. But saying “I’m SO not going to win” like she’s a teenager, only acknowledging Meryl (there are three other nominees, Sandy, mention how deserving they are for once), and her underserving wins (nominee material, sure, but did NOT deserve any of those awards) has made me really, really annoyed with her.

      • mike

I’m pleased to see the backlash has begun. Seriously though, she is starting to come off passive-aggressive. A little humility goes a long way. It is also distressing that she only points to Meryl as deserving. Even she’s acknowledging the others don’t have a chance, very bad form.

      • Jen

My goodness, some of you will never be happy. If she says how happy she is with her nom, she’s bragging, if she says she won’t win she’s being fake.

    • ZeeZee

Please…that was a great and inspiring role…Meryl did what Meryl does – homage’s to another character. Sandra was wonderful and it is not false humility, want to see that go look at Taylor Swift. Now THATS the annoying one. MoNique deserves this award for all she went thru to get this role on screen…simply brilliant!

    • madd

      *undeserving.

      • seren

FYI Sandra mentioned about the other nominees at the interviews after the Golden Globes and the SAG. Please don’t judge her only because you haven’t noticed.

  • Austin

In my opinion Mo’Nique gave one of the best on-screen performances I have ever witnessed. How could she not win the Oscar?
Also, in regards to the Sandra “situation”. I love her and she’s had quite a year, but she should not win the Oscar. How can you rank her performance on the same shelf with Charlize Theron for “Monster” or Kate Winslet for “The Reader/Revolutionary Road” or Marion Cotillard for “La Vie en Rose” (those are terrific performances and fully deserving of their awards).

    • Danny

Yes, but it’s not like Reese Witherspoon in “Walk the Line” or Gweneth Paltrow in “Shakespeare in Love” hold a candle to those performances you mentioned either, and they both won.

      • Danny

Just recently saw “shakespeare in Love” again and Paltrow’s performance is excellent. It’s a tricky role, doing both comedy and romance and classic text and gender bending and she hits it out of the park. For that matter, Joseph Fiennes really should have been nominated himself.

    • ZRob

yeah, she’s just the flavor of the month – again.

  • Morgan Borthwick

Merrrrrryl deserves it, sandra needs to show she can do it again, meryl has been doing it for 18 years since her last oscar… how silly is that?

    • Diggity

Very good point. Meryl should win. She is in role after role of a lifetime. Sandy needs to go away.

    • Sal

I thought at first Meryl would win for The Devil Wears Prada, but Helen Mirren was out of this WORLD! But I disagree with Diggity, she’s done some pretty average roles too (as in not role of a lifetime, not that she was average in the role).

  • Morgan Borthwick

    change that to 28 years

    • Danny

That’s right! It’s so overdue Meryl got her second best Actress Oscar (and third overall). She is the best of our generation and perhaps even the best of any generation, and as someone blogged somewhere else, it is inconceivable that Hilary Swank has two Best Actress Oscars and Meryl only one – but more Best Actress Noms (13 out of 16) than even Katherine Hepburn, who won 4 for God’s sake!

      • Jaime

This isn’t about “well she’s had all these nominations and she hasn’t one in a long time.” This is about the performance! This wasn’t Meryl’s role of a lifetime – not even close. Why is it inconceivable for Hilary Swank to have won two oscars and Meryl only one? Hilary was amazing in those two roles. Meryl is a phenomenal actress without a doubt. This isn’t about overdue, it’s about talent, conviction, and masterful craft. And when I watched Precious, Gabby left it on the floor. Let the Oscars reward talent.

  • david

I think Bullock deserves the OSCAR I watched Julie & Julia, not Meryl’s best performance!

    Go Sandra!!!!!!!!

    • TB

Of course it is not her best performance. I don’t think it is possible for her ever to top Sophie’s Choice. The question is (should be) was her performance better than the other four actresses.

      • mike

Good point. I also don’t believe “The Blind Side” was neceessarily Sandra’s best perfomance either. I was more impressed by her performance in “Crash.”

      • madd

That’s another thing- The Blind Side isn’t even Sandra’s best performance. She was much better in Crash.

  • seren

I’ve been a fan of Sandra for years, and I feel that she’s just been dutiful to do all these ‘campaing’ round because she simply appreciate when a show wants her to be on and the studio wants her to go on the show. And I’m worried overexposure will just feed those haters. I’m not saying she should win. I hope the opposite actually. She may not deserve the win, but she doesn’t definitely deserve the unfair comments by the haters.

And one request I have for you is that I want to hear your discussion more instead of inserted clips. It’s a bit disturbing.

  • mishka

Mo’Nique, Jeff and Christopher are safe.
Sandra vs Meryl? I’ll go for Meryl because her winning is overdue and I think the Academy is aware of that.

    • tori

It’s Christoph. Sorry that’s a big pet peeve of mine when people don’t get his name right.

      • mike

        “tori”…spelling, perhaps? :-)

  • Sally in Chicago

I don’t understand why they’re discussing Sandra campaigning or non-campaigning. Did they not see what non-campaigning Monique did? If she didn’t campaign (look at Streep who IS NOT campaigning) then they would criticize her for not.

    • Clementine

Monique didn’t need campaigning. She is the best in her category because of her talent. Its definitely Monique’s oscar.

    • Christian

Streep is campagning for her movies! She goes on “Today” & other talk shows. She’s always right behind her movies

      • Gloria

Streep is promoting her movies, she’s not campaigning. Big difference. She promoted her movies BEFORE they came out, unlike Bullock who is on every talk show on earth right now AFTER her movie has come out, trying to get Academy votes. It just looks pathetic and insincere on Bullock’s part. I’m glad Dave and Missy called her out on it.

  • Michelle

Bullock is right. She won’t win the Oscar. Her consolation prize will be a Razzie.

  • Matt

Bullock winning for that Lifetime movie of the week would be a travesty.

  • Chris

Sandra Bullock is right! She doesn’t deserve the Oscar! Her role is the exception that proves the rule that this chick cannot act her way out of a paper sack. When will she go away?
