There’s no denying the power of the romantic comedy, even if Valentine’s Day, the movie, is as manufactured as the holiday itself. Read the full post.

A film critic’s job is to express an opinion on a movie. Believe it or not, they don’t have a personal vendetta. They tell if you something is worth spending your money on or if maybe you should see it on dvd instead or not at all. Find a critic who seems to like what you like. Rottentomatoes.com offers a good variety of critical opinions. If the majority hate something chances are it’s crap. Inform yourself. People freak out when someone hates something they like. It’s only an opinion meant to save you time and money. If you don’t care what anyone else thinks then don’t read reviews. Some of us prefer quality films with some substance. Some prefer brainless, unoriginal crap.
Well said.
Everybody on here is either trashing or defending V-day and/or Percy… All I care about is The Wolfman! Dying to see it, just been working all weekend. The bad reviews make me weary… It made just about as much as Percy Jackson! Did anybody see it?? Is it worth my ten bucks???
I saw it today. It’s not great but it’s not as bad as some of the reviews suggest. Del Toro is pretty good if a bit understated. It’s also surprisingly gory (I forgot going in that it was rated R). I found it to be a pretty fun popcorn/horror movie, and the atmosphere/art direction was pretty fun to watch.
There are worse movies you could be seeing (like, oh, Valentine’s Day).
Give me a break!! You are kidding..right? Spend money on that stupid/lame/senseless/horrible movie instead of Wolfman?? That is very very funny! You must have a great sense of humor! LOL Valentine’s day! Hahahahahahahahahaha!
I’m so jealous of you guys(amaricans. In south africa those movies take time to come out.Up in the air,The blind slide,An education,The lovely bones,Percy.
Solid weekend all around. Of course Valentine’s Day was going to come out ahead, but given how bad it was (I saw it Saturday night; Love Actually it’s NOT) and that its main gimmick is over, it’s probably going to drop like a rock next weekend.
Good numbers also for Percy and The Wolfman. And of course Avatar continues to be an Energizer Bunny. The drop for Dear John was pretty clearly coming.
And as a woman, I’m not opposed to Hollywood making female-centric films. What I am opposed to is Hollywood making BAD, formulaic and boring rom-coms, thinking that that crap satiates the female demographic. I’d rather have NO female films than a slew of terrible ones, but that’s just me.
I COMPLETELY agree with you. Here’s the sad thing though, movies like this and the SATC movie are what will keep the studios from making more of the same c*rap. They perform well.
I’m not sure why, since they’re nothing but cliches, but well, I sure as heck am not going to see them!
SATC doing well at the box office is not a mystery. It’s based on a show that was nominated for about 50 Emmy awards during its run, and it has a huge fanbase.
The movie may not have been great, but it’s certainly not surprising that it did well.
I wonder if EW will start covering “My Name is Khan”? It’s getting pretty high opening numbers and on its way to becoming the highest grossing bollywood film here. I really enjoyed it and would love to see it get some attention.
One more brief shout out to Avatar. It’s going to pass 700 million within 3 more weeks and that’s really one for the books. V Day will come and go but we are going to see some eye popping 3D movies over the next 3 to 5 years and we have Avatar to thank. Hopefully the stories will be good too.
After adjusting for inflation, Avatar has now moved up four spots to #17.
Loved Valentine’s Day! It is s fun movie to see w/ your friends.
Le sigh
All I can say is thank god Shutter Island comes out next week to save the box office from the awful dreck that is out right now.
“Finally, for every successful female-led movie, there are 20 failures.”
Thats not true. There have been many recent successful female driven movies. And when female driven movies do fail they generally cost the studio less money then the bigger budget male driven flicks.
That being said I’ve hated most of the recent romantic comedies I’ve seen.I don’t always hate romantic comedies but most of the ones from this decade have been terrible. They lack wit, romance and likeable and/or decently written characters.
Avatar only fell off because it isn’t in as many theaters. I tried to take my 16 year old son and some friends (who hadn’t seen it) to see Avatar on Saturday. It was only in one theater and they are only showing it 3 times a day. Needless to say, by 1:30 all three of those showings were sold out, so we went home. Better luck next weekend I guess.
I do not even understand how I stopped up here, however I assumed this post used to be good. I do not recognise who you’re but certainly you are going to a well-known blogger should you are not already. Cheers!
