Why have the award at all? There’s no other catagory that has so narrow a scope. The only rationale was so there’d be an excuse for musical interludes during the awards show.
Drop the live performances AND lose the catagory altogether.
I don’t understand some of the posters here. It’s ok for the Academy to recognize a film most people didn’t bother to see (Hurt Locker), but the songs better be top 5 Billboard hits. Just because you haven’t heard some of these songs on the radio doesn’t make them unworthy.
Dammit, the one time I’m actually invested in a Best Song nominee (to see Ryan Bingham sing to an audience of a billion — long way from the penniless kid in the back of a pickup truck making a buck from two-bit rodeo riding!) and they cut it. Worse, you know it’s not going to save ANY time or be ANY less boring.
They should have waited only until after I perform a nominated song!! And after that no more performances from over-hyped/rated mediocre “singers” like Beyonsh*t!!! bwahahahaha!!
I LOVE THE BEST SONG PERFORMANCES. They’re what I look forward to the most. Not anymore….

For those who lament the quality of the songs nominated, it’s a win. However the musical performances sometime provide a welcome respite during the technical awards and montages.
They should move some of the technical awards over to the other academy awards broadcast.
My dream would be to see a “Best Overall Film Sountrack” category, if for no other reason that 500 Days of Summer would have Regina Spektor, Hall & Oates, Zoey Deschanel, and the first lady of France perform a medley!
Although, like Dave, I don’t particularly like any of this year’s nominees aside from ‘The Weary Kind’ (which I love), I am disappointed by this news. Regardless of the quality of the songs, I enjoy watching the performances at the Oscars and I feel like the singers deserve to have their moment in the spotlight.
Bc that what the show needs: More clips!
Personally, the movies/artists should be giving 2 mins to perform the version of their songs. If they nominate a good song, it should be good enough to be perform. Its 2 mins! Better than commercials! Remember “Triplets of Belleville’ performance? Just like say Grammy’s. They can be quite good if the song is worth a damn. Or bad: Remember ‘Crash’ song?
We get bored bc the staging and performances end up lacking. But at least we have 10 movies to watch clips from!
I am thrilled at this decision!!!! I have thought for years that this is how the Best Song nominees should be presented, if the Academy insists on still having this category. In fact, all singing and dancing numbers need to be axed from the Oscar telecast. Look at the Golden Globes – they don’t have singing and dancing, and it’s still a very entertaining show.
Songs and music were far more important to the production values and artistic statements of films in the past. Today, songs and music–unless the movie is about songs and music–are not valued highly. The song that should have won this year was not even nominated. It was “Maybe It Is Time for Miracles”–by Natasha Shneider and Alain Johannes– sung by Adam Lambert in the film 2012. If performed by Adam, that song would have spiced up the most lackluster of any Academy Award show yet!
