although it’s a possibility that basterds will get many second or third votes so will the hurt locker. The huge difference is that locker will get many #1 votes and Basterds most likely will not. Locker is most consistently praised whereas Basterds is on many a top 3. The movie that will probably least benefit from this system is Avatar because it appears to be the most polarizing. Regardless here’s my order: 10 serious man, 9 blind side 8 precious 7 education 6 up 5 up in the air 4 district 9, 3 avatar 2 locker 1 basterds ( have seen both 5 times and locker is gaining steam so maybe by March 7 locker will be on top )

For someone who is for Inglorious Basterds why are you promoting that the hurt locker will win.

Because like I said locker is the least polarizing of them all. Basterds is my favorite but I understand if people don’t like it. I also said Locker gets better every time I see it. Like I said before if u see Bigelow’s work youth technology and addiction are recurring topics. Locker is no exception it’s the war movie for the modern soldier and the videogame/gamer generation

I hate the implication that Weinstein is campaigning and that is what will make Basterds win — Inglorious Basterds is the best picture of the year and I think people might have a different idea of what the movie is — and for one thing it is not is Ultra Violent. One of my favorite storylines of any movie last year was the doomed love story between the jewish girl and the nazi soldier. Such a brilliant movie on so many levels.

Avatar and The Hurt Locker had similar parties but didn’t open them to the press the way that the Weinsteins did for the parties for IB. I think that’s where that implication is coming from.

I really wish that the Academy would actually watch all the nominees and vote for what truly moves them. This is what I appreciate so much that voters and audiences actually have time to do this since the oscars are back in March! In that sense, I’m certain that if academy voters actually watch basterds all the way to the end, there will be no question, that it is the best picture of the year.

A month ago, I thought that IB would be able to pull off a Best Picture victory. But not now. A month ago, I thought it would come down to an Avatar vs. IB race (HOW EPIC WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN?), a race that IB could have won. I figured The Hurt Locker would end up falling behind as buzz died. With the PGA and DGA wins, THL became the little film that could. Everyone loves the story of an underdog and so, THL will most likely prevail on Oscar night.

Hate on the movie all you want… But the greatest movie experience of 2009 was none other than a little known movie called Avatar! (Sarcasm intended) And it should win Best Picture!

I know that this is just one guy’s opinion… However, regardless of all the Mumbo Jumbo with the film’s visuals and all the 3D BS, I feel that people need to start accepting that as derivative as it’s story may be, it still never fails to be a great story. Well Told, Well Acted, and needless to say, Well Directed.

Titanic held the title of highest grossing movie of all time. and it held that record for 12 years. How often do you see a film Director top his own commercial success, break his own worldwide records, and raise the bar in groundbreaking visual effects? That I can recall, it has only happened twice in the hands of James Cameron. But that’s just me!

That said, if one movie should upset anyone this year, no matter what your choice is for Best Picture, that winner should be Inglorious Basters! Hands Down!

Besides Pulp Fiction, Tarantino has finally delivered what could arguably be considered his Masterpiece!

    • A

Well Acted? Is that why it got so many acting nominations? How much a movie grosses doesn’t equal how good a movie is.

    • Brad

You’re basing this off of box office? Transformers 2 was up there, should that win? Or how about twilight? People see stupid movies all the time. Avatar should only be in the running for visual effects and that’s it.

QT has such a great style and voice in cinema. I scratched my head when Kill Bill got no love from Oscar. In know IB and KB aren’t the same but if QT won, I consider it long overdue.

  • jmo

    In know = I know

  • Ryan

I hope so! It was crowd pleasing, funny, full of action and surprisingly restrained in violence. I love that he built the tension up in scenes. I think it deserves it more than any other film!

  • deiko

I love them both: Avatar and Inglorious Basterds. All I know is that the Blind Side better not win Best Picture.

  • Fred

This is the movie that could sneak up and take the top prize…..as Avatar and Hurt Locker could have their votes split up and Inglorius Basterds the winner!!!!

  • Lyn

Critics and Hollywood establishment alike loooooove Clooney, and think it’s socially conscious to sympathize with the “real” people in “Up in the Air” who lost their jobs. “Avatar” is all fabulous effects with cliched characters and horrid dialogue. “Hurt Locker” seemed well-done to me, but I’m bothered that so many actual Iraq veterans seem to find it wildly unrealistic (as opposed to the critics, who are clueless about the military).

Ever since Howard Berger won best special effects makeup for Narnia over his work on The Hills Have Eyes remake, I don’t care what Oscar says. Best Picture of 2009 was Martyrs followed by Saw 6. I will barf if Up in the Air wins. I refuse to watch Clooney smirk and bobble his head around for an hour and a half unless the Coen Brothers write and Direct it.

    • Adam

No one is going to take you seriously when you claim that Saw 6 was the 2nd best movie of the year.

  • Brad

First off, can people please stop citing Tom O’Neill as a credible source? He was predicting Antoine Fisher for the win back in the day too. He’s to Oscar prediction what Perez is to blogging.

Secondly, when are either you or Lisa going to get off your butts and turn in a review of Terribly Happy, which is probably the best release of 2010 so far?

Next, I’m cool with Inglourious Basterds or Hurt Locker winning, just hoping it’s not for Avatar.

Finally, Up In The Air as the best of the year? Bleeech. Duller than dishwater. I’m ok with the Farmiga nomination, but that’s about it.

  • Maria

I preferred I.B. the best, most movie I’ve ever seen.It seems a true story. Avatar, it’s a fiction story. But it also good movie

  • en

If the votes split,Best Picture will go to Up. They like to vote in blocks and it’s the only film with a chance to win all of its’ nominations.
