Shutter Island, the fourth collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, all but shut out the competition at the box office on Friday, taking in an estimated $14 million. That puts the psychological thriller on track to top The Departed — which had a $26.9 million opening weekend in 2006 — as the pair’s biggest hit. It also gives Paramount the last laugh after skeptics criticized the studio’s decision to push Shutter Island out of its original Oct. 2009 release date to save marketing coin.
In second place, Valentine’s Day still got some love from audiences in its second weekend, earning a $5.6 million Friday gross. The rest of the top five was rounded out by Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Avatar, and The Wolfman, which suffered a harsh 70 percent drop from last week as fright fans turned their attention to Shutter Island. Be sure to check back tomorrow for a full weekend recap.

I was kung fu fighting. LA LA LA LAAAAa!
Gosh I’m a ninny.
Give me your email address.
Ill send you some that will knock your socks off.
Seeing Shutter Island tonight, can’t wait! I love a good psychological thriller every now and then.
The movie was good but the twist didnt quite work for me.
Now Playing:
Lady Gaga is a piece of Sh*t. How could anyone think she is good? Music sucks today and has for a decade. This is really sad when crap like her can make it to the top.
A decade? How can you not love coldplay and the white stripes!
um…yeah- no argument on the White Stripes – but seriously, Coldplay?! Let’s see – they have an incredibly pretentious git for a leader, they lack originality (see lawsuit between Joe Satriani and their Vida La Vida tune), and simply ARE what’s wrong with music today. Loved them when they were called RADIOHEAD.
It’s Radiohead & Franz Ferdinand for me. Neither one of the lead singers had to marry supermodel types to get attention.
Maybe that is why she has to rely on sensationalism, props/costumes, and other distractions to compensate for her lack of talent. *shrug*
Why, exactly, is today’s music scene being discussed on an article about the weekend box office? You could just ignore the idiots who keep posting Lady Gaga videos all over this website. If you want to discuss music, then please direct yourself to the Music Mix Blog. Thank you.
so jg u obviously dont like dance music or are just a shut in. Needless to say yes here style is odd but it got her the attention she wanted. When she first came out she was more of a plain jane, now look at her goin gaga all the way to the bank. Lady gaga’s the 21st century Madonna her music rocks! Let’s just hope she doesnt snap under the pressure!
She makes me wanna gag and I don’t mean that in a goog way
I hate when people post videos about something that is totally different then the topic we should be talking about!!!
Wake me when Leonardo DiCaprio becomes an actor who can ‘act’. Yawn…
Then somebody should have woken you back in the mid-1990s, when Dicaprio got his first (well-deserved) Oscar nod for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” Or maybe the yawning is a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to your brain.
I guess you missed the wake-up call about 16 years ago when What’s Eating Gilbert Grape came out.
Wake me up when u get a brain. Leo is one of the most underrated actors and should have gotten an Oscar by now
I think that Leonardo DiCaprio is the best actor of his generation. He was phenomenal in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, the Departed, Blood Diamond, Revolutionary Road, and Shutter Island.
DiCaprio’s stepped up his game in the past 8 or so years. I would have said that Edward Norton was the best at one point, but he’s not really made anything that’s made much of an impression on me since 25th Hour. Matt Damon’s mostly content to be an action star, not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, and Jude Law’s had a string of duds for a while, minus a cheeky turn in Sherlock Holmes. Also, Joaquim Phoenix supposedly quit acting. So, yeah, Dicaprio’s the only consistently reliable actor ages 30-40 we’ve got right now.
I have to agree with everyone here, your brain is lacking oxygen because the man is a great actor and seems to be getting better with age, he belongs in front of the camera.
Who do you think is a great actor, PeeWee Herman?
Ok, I’ll bite. Exactly which Dicaprio movie did you watch where he failed to give a stellar performance? Honestly, I can’t think of a single one. I was impressed the moment I saw This Boy’s Life. I understand that everyone has their own opinion but on this one, I need an explanation
oh, then youre asleep the whole time that Leo was making movies as a great actor. He’s so great one should be wondering why he didnt get an Oscar award yet.
Would give one star. Horrible ending, leaves you hanging. I expected more from the previews. Is ok, but would recommend waiting to see on DVD.
Did you think it was horrible because the ending left you “hanging”? In that case, your little review is very subjective sounding. Not everything has to have a tidy, happy ending.
In what way does it leave you hanging? It leaves no questions open… everything is answered, you just need to pay attention and interpret the situation.
if you thought the ending left you hanging, then you clearly didnt understand the ending.
GaPeech, what movie did you watch? Shutter Island certainly didn’t leave me hanging.
I LOVED Shutter Island. In my opinion, the story was captivating, and both Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Williams gave fantastic performances.
So good, it would have easily made my top 10 if it actually came out last Oct. and I think we’d see some love for it in the awards.
But of course now it won’t because it’s released so early in the year.
I’m a big Scorsese fan and–Gangs of New York aside–I think DiCaprio’s done his best work with him, so of course, I rushed out and saw it right away. I had also read and liked the book, so I guess I ruined any surprises for myself. The movie is very competently made and well acted, but for reasons I can’t really put my finger on, it wasn’t quite as satisfying as I’d hoped despite all the craftsmanship and obvious expertise that went into it. Perhaps it was the months of hype or the fact that I’d read the book, but I’m not sure if my reaction would have been different if I hadn’t. It sort of reminds me of the feeling I had walking out of Benjamin Button when I saw it, another well made film from a great director that left me kind of cold and unfulfilled. Forgive me, Mr. Scorsese. I mean no disrespect.
DT I agree with you, although I hated the ending for the book and was wishing that they’d changed it in the movie. I also saw The Wolfman today which wasa a lot of fun.
Forgive you Mr Scorsese?
You think he reads this or gives a crap about your opinion?
Give me a break
You’re right. I don’t give two craps about yours either, dillweed.
dillweed?
lol
Saw it today and have to admit that I did find it a little slow in the beginning. That been said I did nt see the ending coming and I don’t think it leaves you hanging. Of all of Scorcese/DiCaprio collaborations The Departed is still my favorite. And seriously if you think Leo is a bad actor I don’t know what to say. Working with Scorcese has made him into one of the most underrated actors out there. He’s up there with Downey Jr, Norton (if he’d actually make some more movies) and even Depp… Looking forward to Inception with Christpoher Nolan – looks good…
I’ve already read some not so nice reviews on this movie. I say GO LEO – he’s magic in everything he does, hater critics be damned.
I absolutely loved Shutter Island, hit all the right points for me. It’s my personal favorite movie to be released since the tag-team of No Country and There Will Be Blood in 07.
Really loved “Shutter Island”, but it better make a lot of coin this weekend, because the movie is far too esoteric and requires too much patience and thinking to hold up, especially if people going in are expecting a horror movie a la the trailers. Or even a movie like “Cape Fear”. This is an amazing, challenging movie, but very downbeat, especially given current audience tastes.
Off topic but, The WGA has its winners (as per AwardsDaily): No surprises here.
Best Original Screenplay: Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker
Best Adapted Screenplay: Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner, Up in the Air
Best Documentary Screenplay: The Cove
