Exclusive: HBO series 'Rome' may finally be headed to the big screen

Fans of HBO’s critically-beloved (but short-lived) series Rome may not have seen the last of Vorenus and Pullo. Multiple sources have confirmed to EW that a big-screen sequel to the sword-and-sandals series is well underway. Rome creator/executive Bruno Heller — who went on to create CBS’s hit The Mentalist — has finished a script for Morning Light Productions, which financed the development and will produce the film. Series stars Kevin McKidd (Lucius Vorenus) and Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo) will likely sign onto the movie, which picks up in Germany four years after the series ended. The next step for Morning Light is to find a director and a studio, since HBO Films won’t be involved.

Rome the series aired from 2005-07 and took place during Ancient Rome, beginning with Caesar’s invasion of Gaul and continuing with the rise of the first Emperor Augustus. The series centered on soldiers Pullo and Vorenus, who appeared to die at the end of the series.

“…may not have seen the last of Vorenus and Pullo.” Isn’t Vorenus dead?

      • Warda

I’m sure that was the intent, but I don’t care! I’m totally willing to suspend my disbelief on that point to see Vorenus and Pullo back together. Besides, it wouldn’t be the same without Vorenus.

      • AcaseofGeo

Icarus…YESSSSSSS!!!! I agree! Warda, you are right on! I don’t care how they bring him back. This was such an awesome show. Didn’t we already have to suspend some disbelief anyway over the way they played loose with some historical facts????

      • Quirky

They never did show Vorenus actually dying. My theory is that considering how long it would have taken them to sail from Egypt (where he was wounded) to Rome, if he was to die from his wounds it would have happen along the trip home.

      • Iron Man

Bruno Heller confirmed, a long time ago, that Vorenus didn’t actually die at the end of the series.

OH YAY OH YAY OH YAY! That one I’ll be seein in the theater, and not wait for the DVD! About Vorenus, the ending was ambiguous enough. He was in trouble with Augustus, and one way to get out of it would be to fake his death, or at least that’s how I took it. Now if only HBO would make a miniseries of Bernard Cornwell’s The Warlord Chronicles, all of us fans of Rome would have something to really really look forward to…

        Sorry, I meant something ELSE.

      • BK

I never believed he was dead!!!!

Amazing show. I want the box set but $130 is a little much for me.

    • gv

I was lucky enough that my husband grabbed it in Afghanistan for $20.00!

      • Al

That seems a little extreme just for a box set.

    • GGG

I agree, perhaps you check for it on ebay?

    • jms

Check. Amazon. I got my Blu-Ray box set for around $65 there. Though that was back in December.

      • digi

        Costco is cheap

    • H.K. Anders

Netflick it! That’s how I see most of what I watch.

    • Phoebe

Too bad… In my country, original DVDs are really cheap. I bought both seasons of Rome for less than $100

    • Karen

Here it is more than one year later and Amazon has the complete box set, both seasons, for $60 new. You can find used versions split by season for much less, also on Amazon.

Pullo was walking down the street with Caesar’s kid at the end of the series, he didn’t appear to die to me.

    • Momo

I think the writer is referring to Vorenus. Just an awkward sentence structure…

    • Sean

Actually, that wasn’t Caesar’s kid. He was raised under the belief he was the son of Caesar, but he was, in fact, Titus Pullo’s son.

    • Brianicus

Pullo’s death is not in question….Vorenus’s death is. Pullo is was left undoubtedly alive.

  • Alan

Awesome. I thought Heller was doing “The Only Thing Worth Dying For” instead…glad that was just a rumor, though I hope they do a movie from that book as well.

  • Cats

Happy dance…happy dance, but didn’t Lucius die at the end and get torched? Rats…I’m going to have to rewatch the end. Big screen would be great…

    • Michelle

There was no funeral pyre for Vorenus. We were led to believe that he died, but Heller left it ambiguous on purpose. This way he could bring Vorenus back for any potential continuation of the story. Yay! So excited about this!

      • suva

YESSSSS!!! Vorenus lives!!! More KMK. I’d love to see this movie.

    • Brianicus

I don’t think they actually showed Vorenus give his last breath…but it sured seemed like it was inevitable. Happy to hear it may not be so. Definetly need that duo for a film…the two are the show, or most of it.

“Squeeee”???? Is that a “little” squeal?

  • kate

This is the best news I have heard all week. I love that show and really want to see more of these characters! Yeah for more Pullo.
Oh btw the box set is expensive I agree but I bought it and for once it was worth it :)

  • Supes

This is awesome news…ROME was an incredible show…let’s hope the movie is as good/better than the show…otherwise it won’t do it justice.

    • Phoebe

I really am praying that it’s even so much better than the series so that there’ll be a wider demographic interested in Rome. That way, they could actually continue the TV series, I hope.

  • Ders

Momo, you’re right, my fault. Although the sentence structure ain’t the best.

  • ledonatella

    Best Show Ever!!!!

  • Linda L

Yessss!!!! I’m doing the happy dance, too. Love to see more Pullo, Vorenus, and of course, Atia.

  • val

I had a mother of a crappy day, only to come home to this awesome news. Thank you thank you thank you.

  • Momo

I wonder if the kid who played yong Augustus/Octavius will return as Emperor Augusts? I always did prefer him over the second one who replaced him. and by now he should be old enough…

    • LM

Me too, I loved Max Pirkus – he was so much better in the part than the older actor who replaced him. Fingers crossed they bring Max back.

  • Jenn

    I want James Purefoy!

    • Zoe

Hmm…hard to see how that happens. Cleopatra either. :-)

  • jj

AWESOME! We loved this series. So disappointed with HBO when it ended.
One of the few great shows on television.

    • jay

My only concern is that HBO films is not involved. I just hope the sets and wardrobe are as great as they were in the series.
