Clint Eastwood to direct J. Edgar Hoover biopic

Clint Eastwood is gearing up to tackle the life of J. Edgar Hoover in a project being developed by Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment. Eastwood will work with Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who has written the script for Imagine. The movie will follow Hoover’s career, from the founding of the FBI in 1935 to his long tenure as director of the crime-fighting organization that lasted until 1972 when he died. Should Eastwood decide to make it his next film, he will produce it with Grazer through his Malpaso Productions.

It’s still unclear what studio will land the project, which was originally set up at Universal. It will likely move to Warner Bros., which has produced and financed the majority of Eastwood’s work. Eastwood just finished working on the drama Hereafter starring Matt Damon. Warner Bros. intends to release that film in October.

I suppose it’s too much to hope for Dame Judi Dench.

They oughta give the Hefner biography to Clint also. It’s been on grazer’s plate forever. Clint’d have it in the theaters in 6 months.

Philip Seymour Hoffman to play Hoover, surely. Or Johnny Depp.

  • Devin

I’d vote for Billy Crudup, who played him well in “Public Enemies”

I’m not usually a big fan of biopics but this is one I’d love to see. Hoover is such a fascinating character. I agree with janeygotagun, Philip Seymour Hoffman would be a great casting choice.

Didn’t they lose a ton of money on AMELIA and FROST/NIXON and PUBLIC ENEMIES. It seems these expensive bio pics rarely make money or get awards. This should be smaller scale for cable and not theatres.
